Types and abilities have become pretty complicated - well maybe not complicated per se but there's a lot of it. Different moves with different effects, moves, abilities. And the game uses in-game trainers to show them off.

Like a great deal of trainers aren't supposed to be a challenge, they're supposed to teach players about the effectiveness of certain moves or strategies. A trainer will use encore when it doesn't make much sense to do so, just to teach people how to do it. The casual kid who plays Pokemon maybe needs that.

I saw a kid playing it at work during lunch once using a fire move on a Starmie. And he wasn't even like, 5, he was 12 or something. But he made such a simple error and that showed me that for as much as we all know a lot about Pokemon, to a new player there is an awful lot to learn. For everyone on this board it's effortless but we aren't the target demographic.

I agree there should be a difficulty setting, but that's something I always bear in mind - and honestly, the lack of challenge has never bothered me, since I just like playing through Pokemon games. They're the Disney of videogames to me. Comforting and happy and not really challenging (and then in the postgame it can be).

I always felt this was a thing with mass effect too, but from a narrative POV more than a gameplay one. Like people say choices don't matter in ME but to me that's wrong - the problem is the people who care enough to have that sort of discussion and make that complaint are the kind of people that will have played extremely thoroughly and the way, say, ME3 was set up (especially after some patches) meant that a very thorough, hardcore player would have the best possible fleet at the end almost without a doubt, regardless of what happened before. But if you chose to skip shit and not do shit then suddenly the ME2 ending affects whether you can choose destroy or control. I understand the issue but equally I understand Bioware catering to casual players more.

Things like the Tali trial or solving the Quarian/Geth conflict are also examples of this. Thoroughness allowed you to find the perfect solution to those issues, more than your previous deductive skill. It wasn't so important that you thought long and hard about what you should choose so long as you chose to put yourself in the position to make that choice in the first place. In other words, the game encouraged you to play it as much as possible and rewarded you simply for doing that more than for choosing between two things.
Choices that really matter in ME are more player choices that come down to action vs. inaction than the big 50/50s.

Basically in both cases you have two very popular RPG series that hardcore fans get frustrated with because they cater to far wider demographics and as a result limit themselves somewhat. ME could have had more narratively complex impact to its choices but that might have been alienating (and time-consuming in development). Pokemon could be far more difficult but that might be alienating to kids.

I'm fine with it. I get both the complaints and the reason I think. But I'm not going to say that the option of a difficulty increase wouldn't be much appreciated.

Like I mostly dislike Square RPGs that I've played but I wouldn't even really consider Square for this (anymore. I'm not a teenager). I think being so thoroughly "betrayed" by Konami is what puts them so low.

I will say that I've never seen a company give as much away in trailers as the Pokemon games have the last few years. There have been almost no surprises in the last three or four releases.

Like imagine, in ORAS, how much more hype DEOXYS IN SPACE would have been if the entire Delta Episode wasn't spoiled.

You do have a choice to watch these things but it punishes you a little bit for being interested by giving away too much.

To me, the ideal solution (as you are acutely aware) was to blanket ignore him until he changed the way he acted or stopped entirely. But that was never going to happen.

Like people do want to talk, just not with someone who treats them like shit from the outset, and that's absolutely reasonable. Solution? Don't treat them like shit

And it does sound like you're absolving Timjab of a lot here no matter what you say. He is what he is because of his environment, essentially, and that given the right situation, the right story, others can be shaped into Tim. I don't buy into that - eventually you have to make your own choices, develop some self-awareness and change the way you act

Timjab, by entering a topic and attacking people, has in fact started trouble. It is not the fault of Inviso (many things are but not this) that Timjab is needlessly hostile. This is why people are saying you're giving Tim an out - right there.

I agree with a lot of your post, there is definitely a cycle that led to this, but your wording there is exactly what people are talking about with your defence of Tim.

So the solution, in your mind, is what?

Allow Tim to waltz in, treat everyone like shit and never ever fight back against the sometimes slanderous garbage he's spewing out? No. He should change. It's insane to expect people to just sift through Tim posts to find his actual points in amongst the garbage.

Of course, yes, we're now at the point where Tim has become almost like a running gag and people will say provocative shit to or about him outside of an argument. But that's a consequence of his behaviour.

Like when you sift through the extraneous personal garbage that he tended to escalate that stuff into (not alone but he led the charge), I understand the police's side a little more. But once the perspectives are established, that's when you get into a constructive discussion about how media perception could change, or how cop procedures could change, or the extent to which there is a genuine problem with the US police force. But it was never allowed to go that far.

I'd honestly agree if the guy had even the slightest common courtesy. He is instantly 0-100 needlessly aggressive on everything. Like, the Star Wars thing. Yikes.

This has been pointed out to him - his apparent inability to handle discussions without spitting loud and unnecessary venom - and he's responded with sexism and sarcasm and ignorance. This has happened repeatedly. Inviso and LTM aren't my favourite people but to me this has fuck all to do with them. They aren't even in the same category as Timjab.

Honestly for a long time I was prepared to accept Tim as a cop defending his own who just didn't know how to moderate himself

It was when he got into a really aggressive argument about something really minor and petty to do with Star Wars: TFA that went on for days in which he was (as I recall) in the wrong, and which culminated in him being so amped that he made a topic specifically to spoil the movie's big twist. That's kind of when I realised that Tim was far more toxic a person than I'd ever given him credit for.
