You were meant to be 5'9". If you want to be taller go for it, but unless you were deprived of proper nutrition while growing up, had a serious injury, or have some kind of congenital defect, you're more than likely the height you're supposed to be.

The funny part is, the human body is meant to be proportional. The length of your legs is meant to counterbalance the length of your torso and head (that's sort of the point of the Vitruvian Man).

If you break your legs to add four inches, you're basically turning yourself into an asymmetrical freak (because you're not countering that additional height in your torso). You'll basically be a 5'9" body with the legs of a 6'6" man. It will not look good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNjYJV4PO1E

Everything will be out of alignment, your center of balance will be absolutely fucked, and you almost certainly will become incredibly clumsy and awkward afterwards (absolutely temporarily, and possibly permanently).

Also, speaking as someone who HAS legs that are slightly too long for my torso (I'm 6'3", but I should probably be closer to 6'0"), it can be incredibly inconvenient - it makes bending over harder, doing things like putting on your shoes, and other foot related stuff. It'll probably also increase your risks for knee problems later in life.

I get that people (especially men) don't want to be short, but none of the drawbacks of being short are going to be as bad as the drawbacks of essentially mutilating your body into a shape it was never meant to be in. Unless you're suffering from literal dwarfism, you definitely shouldn't be getting leg lengthening surgery.

The only reason you got XIV at all instead of XI just going on forever is because they completely screwed the pooch on XI and had to redo everything all over again just to get people to play.

FFXIV is successful and popular, so there's no reason to reboot.

It's the same reason why we never really got WoW2.

A) most people don't have that skill naturally
B) most developers think about the gameplay first and warp the story around that

C) Most story-driven indie devs just default to visual novel style play or "walking simulator" rather than RPG.

RPG mechanics really don't add to narrative - it's usually just something that exists parallel to the story rather than integrating with it. If you have a story to tell and you view it as the most important part of the game, you're more likely to focus on gameplay mechanics that enable that story more effectively.

A lone dev basically has to prioritize tasks because they don't have a team handling every aspect of games. So an indie game with robust mechanics likely has crap art and terrible story. A game with stronger story probably has weak gameplay mechanics. And so on.

papercup posted...
Honestly if I were to make an RPG, the story would be bare bones and the focus would be the combat. Like, the story wouldn't be very long, maybe like 8-10 hours, but then there would be like 8-10 hours of optional difficult postgame content.

For me the priority would be reversed - I'd probably just make a Choose Your Own Adventure style game with general gamebook mechanics and multiple endings. Using dialogue flags like crazy to alter how NPCs interact with you and whether you've triggered certain events.

I basically built a game like that in HyperCard years ago. I could probably do it with HTML now if I wasn't so lazy. The main discouragement for me would be that I'd want to make more of a 90s style point-and-click adventure game visual style, but I lack the artistic ability to draw or pixel art anything - so all I could really do would be 80s style text-based.

In theory, I could exploit the hell out of AI art now. But I don't know how well that would work if the intention is to make a commercially viable game.

To be fair, it's three kids, not one kid. Which it literally says in that article.

So it would technically be $21k per kid. And may be subject to change once they start hitting adulthood (one of them is going to be 18 in about 2 years). Though from that article the bulk of the money is going to the fact that she's unwilling to move them out of the rich neighborhood they've been growing up in, so it's a "living in the style to which they are accustomed" argument, where she doesn't want to start living closer to her actual means.

But the US court system has been horrifically biased against men in divorce, custody, alimony, and child support cases for a looong time now. And it tends to be even worse in California. So if anything he's lucky he managed to argue it down to $63k, when she was apparently asking for almost three times that.

Disagree.

As a culture we went from everyone constantly worrying about the government forming a police state and installing cameras everywhere to everyone constantly carrying around a phone they use to take pictures of themselves and post literally everything they do on social media.

We've given up all pretense of privacy, and the younger generations barely even understand the concept. Once the last few old holdouts die off, there'll be no one left to complain about being constantly monitored and recorded.

If you want to see the path the future is going to take, just look at algorithms that look at everything you watch and everything you search for, then go out of their way to recommend things they think you'll like - and the people who gleefully love the convenience of that. The future is that, only more refined - until the algorithm knows more about you than you know about yourself, and has mastered the art of selling things to you. And you'll love it for it.

This is generally why I just try and enjoy the stuff from the new dev teams now, whilst their star is rising. Nearly every developer turns to shit it seems.

I'd agree, but the problem there is that new devs may not be giving the experience you want. Whether that be because they're not as skilled, or because they want to provide their own take and it isn't something you want.

The reason old devs become beloved in the first place is because they keep putting out experiences that you loved, to the point where you started to rely on "new game from [insert dev]" was a guarantee that you'd enjoy it. But now someone who loved BioWare-style RPGs may find they can't find any games that really scratch the same itch. Stuff from Larian or Spiders/Focus Home, or even From Software may be too bleak. Stuff like Cyberpunk releases so broken you don't want to take the chance. Stuff like Vampire: the Masquerade Bloodlines 2 dies in development hell. And so on.

So mourning the slow lingering death of companies like BioWare and Obsidian isn't just nostalgia for the past, it's because nothing in the present/future is really replacing it.

A device approach is a good step in the right direction, I think. Having parents or legal guardians actually perform their role rather than put whomever in front of a screen and forget about them for hours on end would be nice, but that has been the struggle since the end of the 70s; and it's gotten worse since then.

The problem is, if you're the parent who goes out of their way to limit your kids from using the technology, Internet, and social media, you've essentially guaranteed your child is going to be a janitor at McDonalds when they grow up.

Like it or not, being able to use and navigate technology has become the "literacy" of the modern age. A kid who grows up not having access will grow up developmentally limited compared to their peers. They'll also be socially impaired, because they'll lack the capacity to relate to their fellows.

It's easy to say that parents should parent and kids should go out and play and not spend all day on their phones/tablets. But it's not really that easy to do in a way that doesn't do more harm than good.

Ultimately the real problem is finding a way to better integrate and implement the technology, skills, and experiences in a formative way rather than just shrugging and hoping everything works out for the best.

Doesn't really mean much when assholes on every part of the political spectrum have used it as an argument (for longer than any of us here have been alive). It's not really aligned to a specific ideology, it's just one of the easiest rhetorical appeal-to-emotion arguments you can make. Because whenever someone disagrees with you you can just accuse them of hating kids.

It's Social Manipulation 101.

It's like how anti-abortion groups call themselves "Pro-Life" (because it allows them to paint themselves as morally superior while their enemies are "anti-life" or "pro-death" or "in favor of murdering babies"). While groups in favor of abortion call themselves "Pro-Choice" (because it allows them to paint themselves as morally superior while their enemies are "anti-choice" or "pro-oppression" or "in favor of denying women basic human rights"). It's all deliberately worded to make you look like the asshole for disagreeing with them.

People on both the Left and the Right have used the "won't someone please think of the children?!" argument. And it's usually the argument you use when you don't have any other good arguments.

Can I introduce you to Tic-Tac-Toe and Dots and Boxes?

Once you've got a taste for it, we can even start trying more advanced fare like Snakes and Ladders or Uno.

My usual stance is that any argument or proposition that involves "think of the children" as part of its justification is probably objectively wrong. Because it almost always is.

Honestly, kids shouldn't be online anyway.

At this point it's pretty much a necessity that they need to be, in order to become functioning adults.

Maybe we just need to create a separate Internet for kids. And every kid has to take a driver's license-like test to be allowed on the adult Internet.

(of course, if we DID that all the pedos would just make fake kid accounts to hang out there anyway, so it would take a lot of policing)

as a single man, i guess i get it but wish they would extend this crap to women as well.

100% agree.

The problem isn't single men, it's adults (of any given gender) without kids wanting to go somewhere that is mainly kid-centric. There are way too many pedos of any given gender or pronoun choice who would view that sort of thing as a smorgasbord. Or an opportunity.

I don't have kids (and never will), and I'm perfectly fine with places like Legoland or Chuck E. Cheese not wanting me there. But limiting it to just men is only solving half the problem.

deserved, even though it hurts to say it.

wish other big developers would do the same.

It's sad when you think about all the big developers you used to love, and realize every single one of them is basically a walking corpse. Or a flesh-eating alien wearing the severed face of your former loved ones.

BioWare, Obsidian, Bungie - none of them are even remotely the same companies they used to be, either in terms of people, culture, or output. Go back farther and I can throw Square into the mix. Or the other devs that were devoured by EA like Origin and Westwood. Even companies like Bethesda, Blizzard, and Gearbox are pretty clearly shadows of what they once were. And the list goes on...

Volition's been dead for years, this was just a mercy killing.
