Hey, the man wasn't wrong.

This is the point where I'd link to a video on YouTube from Red Dwarf back in the 80s where Lister makes a comment about how humans are basically a disease, and all the other planets avoid Earth because "Eww, she's got humans!"... but I've tried to find that one before and never seem able to.

EDIT: Tracked down a transcription:

LISTER: Why does it have to be such a big deal? Why cant it be like, like, human beings are a planetary disease? Like the Earths got German measles or facial herpes, right? And thats why all of the other planets give us such a wide berth. Its like, Oh, dont go near Earth! Its got human beings on it, theyre contagious!

Tad Williams - Memory Sorrow Thorn

I've always heard about this series from other people, but I never really got around to reading it myself. Even though it seems like something I might like.

Which reminds me of a few more recommendations. L. E. Modesitt Jr. is a writer a friend of mine used to be really into (mainly the Recluce series and the Spellsong books), though I've never read them myself. But there's a LOT of them, so it might be worth a look just to see if they look interesting (and it's worth noting at this point that most of these writers have bibliographies on Wikipedia if you want to look up a specific series, what books are in it, and what order to read them in).

On the subject of recommendations from people I've never read, I know an ex-girlfriend of mine used to be really into C. J. Cherryh, but I never really looked into her because sci-fi has never really appealed to me that much (and eventually because the recommendations of ex-girlfriends don't really feel all that compelling once they're an ex).

Back onto books I've actually read - there's Terry Brooks. The Shannara series is pretty well known (and has gotten adapted into TV shows before), but it's worth mentioning (because you never know what authors newer/younger readers have actually heard of). The first few books feel like fairly derivative Tolkien-clone stuff, and the later books feel like the series has spiraled out of control from the desire to keep publishing popular books until he can retire a multi-millionaire, but there's definitely a sweet spot in the series where it's very good. So it might be worth a look (and then just drop out if the books start feeling dull later - I think I dropped out somewhere around book 8).

Speaking of series that sort of spiraled out of control - Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time. It kind of feels almost pointless to recommend because most people probably already know about it, and because it's uneven as hell (the first few books are kind of weak, the second half of the series is padded all to hell and gets boring, the ending is pretty good but can feel really rushed in some ways and anticlimactic in others). But it might be worth a look to someone who's never really read it.

Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series is another popular one, though some people might want to pass on it because they don't like his personal politics (the same reason why people might be hesitant to get into Orson Scott Card's work).

The Susan Cooper Dark is Rising books are pretty good, though might feel unsatisfying to some adult readers because they were originally aimed more at a young adult audience (though I don't think they feel "childish", except maybe the first one, a bit). This probably would have been one of my stronger recommendations because I loved it as a kid, but the movie they made was so utterly terrible I think it has retroactively caused me to block the entire series out of my mind so I didn't think of it before now. Seriously, that movie was quite possibly the worst atrocity ever committed by Hollywood.

I suppose I could recommend the TimeWars books by Simon Hawke (if you're into time travel fiction partially based around the idea that famous novels like Ivanhoe were based on actual history), but those would probably be an absolute bitch to find these days (I had trouble finding used copies on Amazon years ago).

I feel like Gregory Keyes was a writer worth reading, but it might also be telling that I can't remember a single thing about his Age of Unreason series in spite of reading it back when it came out (and I seem to remember liking it).

That's probably all I'm going to come up with. I can't justify spending the next day or so just obsessively trying to remember every book I've ever read. Because I've read way, way too many.

Isaac Asimov has some good ass science fiction, specifically the Foundation series, that gets overlooked because it's pretty old

On the other hand, the fact that there's literally a Foundation TV show on Apple TV+ right now means that a lot of people are potentially aware of it now and considering reading the source material.

A shame that Apple TV+ has metaphorically murdered the source material with a chainsaw, set the body on fire, and then fucked the charred corpse.

Aside from that, I'd recommend anyone thinking about Asimov consider reading the Robot novels first instead, if only because the Robot, Empire, and Foundation novels are all interconnected.

But I'd also say that I don't necessarily think people SHOULD read those books fully in chronological order. For example, I don't think anyone should read Prelude to Foundation or Forward the Foundation before the other books. I think Asimov's stories/universe benefit immensely from reading them in publishing order rather than in-universe order.

Muscles posted...
Either more obscure Fantasy, Horror or Sci-Fi or just some great authors from other genres since I want to branch out

It's worth asking if you're interested in more soft sci-fi or harder sci-fi, but since Asimov's really the only one I was going to suggest it won't help me to recommend things all that much.

For obscure fantasy... again, it kind of depends on what sort of flavor of fantasy you're into. But I will always recommend David Eddings as a writer for anyone who is new to fantasy or who just hasn't read his books. Then I'd usually encourage them to segue out into the Fred Saberhagen "Book of Swords" series (and possibly the Empire of the East novels if they can). And Saberhagen also has a lot of books straddling other genres (like his sci-fi Berserker novels) if you're interested in that.

Roger Zelazny is fantastic, though his Amber novels might feel a bit too "modern" or "metaphysical" for some people if they just want pure medieval fantasy. His Dilvish novels are more traditional, but a lot harder to find.

Stephen R. Donaldson is quite possibly my favorite fantasy fantasy writer ever (though quite possibly tied with Zelazny), but his works can be really dark, and a lot of people have a hard time reading his stuff because his Thomas Covenant books have a really unlikable protagonist. His Mordant's Need books are much better in that respect, but some people may still be kind of turned off by one of the two main characters.

Piers Anthony is another possible recommendation - most people who know/like him like him for the Xanth novels (which he churns out like crazy), but those are mostly kind of beginner-level fantasy and revolve around puns a lot (which is why kinds tend to like them), but he has a lot of other books that are a bit more complex. His Apprentice Adept series is kind of a neat fusion of fantasy and sci-fi, and his Incarnations of Immortality series is kind of cool if you're into more metaphysical fiction.

Terry Pratchett's Discworld is pretty much the classic fantasy series that gets recommended a lot, though especially in the earlier books it's more like a parody of fantasy, and it helps to be really well read in the genre already to get what he's making fun of (stuff like Anne McCaffrey's Pern novels, Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser books, and even the original Conan stories by Robert E. Howard - all of which are nice fantasy recommendations in and of themselves for this list). But later Discworld books sort of take on their own identity and flavor and are just a really fantastic fantasy series in general.

Looking over my bookshelves... I could also throw in stuff like the Death Gate novels by by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman - those are pretty good (and if you like their writing style and are willing to get into RPG tie-in novels, there's always their Dragonlance books). Or even the Night Watch series by Sergei Lukyanenko, if you're willing to read a series that is always a slight bit awkward in writing style because it's being translated from Russian (though if you don't mind that, there's also all the original Witcher novels by Andrzej Sapkowski that have been translated from Polish).

If you're willing to dip into "genre-trash" game tie-in novels, a lot of R. A. Salvatore's earlier D&D novels (aka the ones Drizzt comes from) are pretty good. As are some of the earlier Halo novels back from before 343 took a steaming shit on the entire franchise's narrative. I could also recommend Jack Yeovil (aka Kim Newman)'s Warhammer novels, mainly about Genevieve the vampire. Or sticking with Kim Newman, his Anno Dracula series starts out pretty good as well.

If you're willing to get into a long-running super-hero series with a bit more of a sci-fi bent, the Wild Cards novels are a pretty good read. They're generally edited by George RR Martin (aka the Game of Thrones guy), and are mostly a collection of interconnected short stories or mosaic novels written by multiple authors (and if you wind up liking one author's contributions a lot, it might even give you more recommendations for the future).

Apart from that... hmm. I've read way too much fantasy (both good and bad) over the last 40 years to remember it all. Riverworld by Philip Jos Farmer is kind of interesting. The Chung Kuo novels by David Wingrove were pretty good. I liked Poul Anderson's Time Patrol stories. Larry Niven's Ringworld books are generally a pretty popular suggestion.

There's writer Iain M. Banks' Culture novels - I never really liked them myself (other than The Player of Games), but a lot of people like them (and apparently they were a huge inspiration to the Bungie guys when they made Halo, along with Ringworld).

A lot of people like Michael Moorcock's work, though I think he's extremely hit-or-miss. Though I did like his Eternal Champion novels, his Von Bek stories, and his Elric stuff (somewhat).

I feel like I could probably remember more if I really concentrated on it, but that's probably way more of a list than you really need for starters.

Nope.

Maybe if the planets had been around, fully explored and researched, and actively settled for thousands of years, I'd consider it.

But as is I'm not even willing to move to Europe, let alone being the first to trailblaze a new frontier. I've never been much of a neophile, and I hate camping and nature and "roughing it", so a planet without infrastructure is pretty much the definition of hell for me.

I'm also not super-keen on signing up for a settlement mission where you're pretty much flinging yourself into the abyss and hoping everything goes right, and there's a high likelihood you're going to fail and you and everyone with you is going to die (quite possibly in some gruesome ways).

200 years ago, I wouldn't have been one of the people on the Oregon Trail. 500 years ago I wouldn't have been one of the people traveling to the New World. I'm too old and not desperate/unsatisfied enough to want to throw literally everything away and try to start over.

In what possible way? The occasional bit of humor that's there? It's not overwhelming and ever present like it is in DOS and let's not pretend Lilichor wasn't ever a thing.

The vast majority of the game is treated seriously.

The tone isn't a question of comedy. It's a question of genre and narrative intent.

For all the darker moments in BGI and II (and the option for the player to play straight up evil), the game story as a whole still leans into epic fantasy. That's the default flavor of the Forgotten Realms setting as a whole (and games like Icewind Dale and Neverwinter Nights all sort of have a similar feel to the BG games because of it - even the Dark Alliance games feel like BG I and II narratively in spite of having a completely different combat system).

Both D:OS2 and BGIII lean much more towards dark fantasy (which is very much the influence of ASoIaF/Game of Thrones on the fantasy genre over the last 20 years or so). People are dicks, the world is crueler, a number of quests tend to have more bittersweet endings. Epic fantasy and dark fantasy just feel different, in the same way that Game of Thrones feels different from Lord of the Rings.

Some players complained during the early access that none of your companions are really GOOD people. Even the nicer ones don't really feel like heroes, and anyone wanting to play a classic fantasy hero is still going to be stuck with all these completely broken people of questionable morals. That's pretty much the D:OS2 design philosophy in a nutshell. Contrast against the original BG games, where you could still form an evil/evil-ish party (Viconia, Korgan, Edwin, etc), but the majority of allies were still relatively heroic (even characters like Imoen).

Ignoring the fact that Sarevok technically had a chance at redemption in BGII kind of falls into the same category. Him remaining evil fits the darker tone better.

None of which is saying that BGIII is bad. Or that having a darker, more cynical tone "ruins" things. But it does feel much closer to D:OS2 in writing and characterization than it does any of the other Baldur's Gate games.

(And that's not even counting more minor things, like being encouraged to bring "blatantly evil" people into your group and trusting them solely because they have useful game mechanics value - Malady and Tarquin in D:OS2 and Withers in BGIII fill very similar narrative roles in that sense.)

I had to watch @ParanoidObsessive repeatedly and erroneously call thos game DOS3 when it's clearly not, either in world feel or mechanics.

It's absolutely a DOS2-style game reimagined with D&D mechanics.

The map design is similar. How they handle inventory is similar. Graphic design is similar outside of cutscenes/dialogue scenes. Their entire narrative design and character philosophy is exactly the same (right down to having the "origin characters" for players to choose as the main character). The overall tone of the games is very much the same vein.

It has far more in common with D:OS and D:OS2 in all of those (and some other) respects than it has with Baldur's Gate I and II. Even if you didn't know it was made by Larian, it's very obvious it's made by the same people who made D:OS2.

Yes, it has 5e D&D mechanics, and yes it's set in Faerun. Yes, it has strong ties to the "Dead Three" elements of the original games. But that doesn't really distance it from D:OS2 (or somehow make it the perfect successor to the original BG games).

None of which is saying it's a bad game. But you can definitely see where it's coming from.

You're not wrong but he technically alerted the Autobots as soon as he started eating the Cybertron moons. Maybe he legitimately didn't know they were Autobot bases?

He doesn't eat them until after he's already created Galvatron, at a time when the Autobots technically can't use the Matrix (because the wrong person has it).

It's hard to tell because the timing of events in the movies is so inexact (and the writers definitely didn't care about the details all that much), and they never really specify just how Unicron actually travels through the universe (and at what speed), but it's kind of implied that Unicron followed Galvatron back to Cybertron to make sure he kept his end of the bargain - and ate the moons as a deliberate threat (ie, "If you don't do your job I'mma gonna eat your planet.").

Even as-is in the film, the only reason the Autobots have even the remotest idea of what Unicron is is because Hot Rod and Kup get lucky and crash on the Quintessons' world, where they talk to the one person in the entire universe who can apparently even tell them that much. While at the same time Ultra Magnus loses the Matrix to Galvatron, who takes it to Unicron, where it's then passed to Hot Rod.

If they miss or fail even ONE of those steps, they lose. And even if they DO every one of those steps, but Galvatron decides to just shoot Hot Rod rather than trying to choke him out, they lose.

It's the kind of ridiculous chain of coincidences that most fantasy movies will just shrug away as being "fate" or "destiny", and the Star Wars films can only justify with "Umm, it was the WILL OF THE FORCE. Woooo!"

It's the kind of plot a railroading GM comes up with in an RPG.

(It's also worth remembering that the Autobots have NO IDEA how to actually BEAT Unicron even right up to the very moment they succeed. Hot Rod blurts out that the Matrix can stop him, but that's just gut instinct, and none of the others really seem to take him all that seriously. And none of them knew how to use it anyway. It's pretty much pure luck that the exact right person grabs it while getting choked out by Galvatron.)

I thought you had legit left GameFAQs or something, until I saw someone quote you yesterday, so I dug around my settings. God knows how long I had you on.

I've been around about as much as usual. My AMP is around 240, and I feel like it's hovered around there (just on either side of 200) for a while now. So I've generally been posting about as fast as my posts have been purging.

I feel sure I've replied to stuff you've said before, but no idea if you saw it or not.

Yeah, I haven't seen Wave since the Geek topics ended.

Thanks for proving my point by seizing on the flimsiest of pretenses to rant about something because you're addicted to being surly.

So we're just not supposed to know if a user is banned? K

You can still literally go to someone's account and look up their status if they're that important to you.

Whether or not a random user gets banned shouldn't matter to you at all, so there's no real reason for anyone to call attention to the fact.

And let's be honest, it's not like it really matters anyway, since pretty much everyone who gets banned just makes another shit gimmick/trolling account 5 minutes later anyway. So you'll see them again in a few days.

Pizza? People always just order a medium of their choice and that's it.

When my friends would order pizza, we'd usually get two large pies - half plain, half pepperoni, half onions, and half sausage. Never had any issues or problems.

And that takes into account that one of our friends is actually allergic to onions.

I don't know man, seems like bad planning on his part to straight up antagonize and later assault the planet of the guys possessing the one thing that you know could fuck you up.

That's not exactly what happens, though.

He's coincidentally in the exact right place in all of infinite space to reach the Decepticons that get dumped before they die. He basically takes the opportunity to send them as minions to go kill the current Autobot leader and destroy the Matrix. If he hadn't picked the most treacherous robots in the universe to send it would have worked. Even if they failed, there shouldn't have been a trail back to him to make problems for him.

He doesn't start threatening Cybertron until Galvatron starts rebelling, and it's a sort of "Do what you're told or I'mma eat your planet."

Then Galvatron betrays him, and brings the Matrix back to him. Knowing that Galvatron can't use it, he basically decides to punish him by eating his planet.

The only dumb part is deliberately eating literally the only thing that can kill you, but it wasn't an immediate threat at that point. It only becomes one because the destined Autobot leader just happens to show up in a ship that they crash into his eye. Which gives them the opportunity and motivation to find and use the Matrix in time.

If pretty much anything happened differently in the movie, the good guys lose. If the one group doesn't find the Junkions and save Ultra Magnus, they lose. If the other group gets killed by the Quintessons (or just take too long to escape), they lose. If Hot Rod gets killed by Unicron's internal defenses, gets killed by Galvatron, or just gets lost inside of Unicron/doesn't meet Galvatron, they lose. If Galvatron behaves, they lose. If Unicron just happens to go a different way on his travels, he misses the Decepticons, never sends them, and the good guys never have a chance to stop him. And so on.

It basically takes a ridiculous chain of unlikely events strung together to set up the exact scenario that defeats him.

To paraphrase my post from the other topic:

Depends on the context.

When talking to most people I refer to him as my father.

When I'm talking to close friends who actually knew him, I'll call him my dad.

When I'm talking to him, I don't call him anything because he's deeeeeeeeaaaaaaaad.

how the fuck did Unicron even make the list when he gets BTFO'd in his first appearance?

Because he has one unique and nearly impossible to exploit weakness, which by narrative coincidence just happened to occur in spite of being a billion-to-one chance?

Unless you're literally the destined leader of the Autobots AND have the Matrix of Leadership nearby, you're not beating him. Later lore even made him a literal god.

Ironically, the Autobots actually deplete the Matrix a season or two after the movie. So if he'd attacked them about three years later they'd all be dead.

there's cola, diet, other, and then pepper, only pepper branded drink is Dr pepper, why don't get its own button on lids

Probably because Dr Pepper isn't cola.

From Wikipedia:

"Dr Pepper was a frequent player in the 1990s antitrust history of the United States. As part of these activities, economists and the courts have weighed in with the opinion that Dr Pepper is a "pepper" flavored drink and not a "cola". In 1995, the FTC blocked a merger between The Coca-Cola Company and Dr Pepper on grounds that included concerns about a monopoly of the "pepper" flavor category of soft drinks."

So "Pepper" doesn't just mean Dr Pepper, it also includes brands like Mr. Pibb.

It's also worth noting that your lid says Pepper, but that's not universal. McDonalds (which has supply deals with Coca-Cola) has a lid that says Diet, Tea, Other, and "P" (feel free to insert jokes here).
