I have allergies, and I never even wanted grass. I want to do as little maintenance as possible and mow as infrequently as humanly possible

Same for me. I've got mild hay fever when it comes to grass, and it makes mowing a real miserable experience. Fortunately I'm not severe, but it does mean when I mow I'm constantly blowing my nose for a while afterwards (and often during). Just oh so much snot.

streamofthesky posted...
Thanks for any tips/advice.

Two things:

First, what sort of mower you want kind of depends on what your yard looks like. If you've got a relatively flat level yard, a self-motivating mower might be great for you (or even a ride-on mower if your yard is large enough). But if your yard is very hilly and has lots of trees or other obstacles you'll need to mow around, that kind of mower will be terrible and you'll probably want something smaller and fully manual. Added to which, if your lawn grows relatively slowly, doesn't have a ton of weeds, and you're planning on mowing often an electric mower may serve your needs, but if your lawn is heavier, is prone to a lot of weeds, and/or if you want to put off mowing as long as possible (meaning the lawn is going to be much higher when you finally mow it), an electric mower might lack the power you need to really push through it, and you'd be better off with a gas-powered mower. No one mower is going to be perfect for every yard type - you need to judge for yourself what your needs are.

Second, if you can, try to look for a recycling/mulching mower. Those you can mow bagless and the mower basically recycles the grass clippings into fertilizer that goes back into the lawn. You want this, because emptying a bag full of grass is an absolute bitch if you have hay fever, and getting rid of the clippings can be a hassle if you're not just composting them or otherwise just straight dumping them somewhere. The average mower can run without the bag, but will tend to leave large clumps of grass that look like crap and can cause your lawn to look patchy - so you're better off making sure you've got one that will help break the grass clippings down smaller as you go.

Though a really good secret society wouldn't require one, because it's really stupid to advertise that you're a member of a secret society. Like, that's a pretty big part of what "secret" means.

Literally nothing else in my life has ever been something I want eternally branded onto me. Love fades. Everything disappoints you eventually.

TopicIs June a Spring or Summer month?
ParanoidObsessive

The local standard for most of my life was that summer starts around Memorial Day (which is when people start opening their pools) and ends around Labor Day (when people start closing their pools and kids go back to school).

There's an argument to be made that most of June isn't summer because most schools' summer break doesn't start until the end of June, but that might depend on the school (and a lot of colleges will actually end in May, sooo...).

As others have pointed out, it's technically both, since the official start of summer is the 20th/21st. But people usually round that off so that June/July/August is summer, Sep/Oct/Nov is autumn, Dec/Jan/Feb is winter, and March/April/May is spring. Of course, seasons aren't really exactly "equal", and depending on where you live it might seem different to you. For example, for most of my life in New Jersey we've kind of gone directly from summer to winter (and vice-versa) in the span of about a week, and there's the old joke in places like Milwaukee that there's only two seasons - winter and July 12th.

Depends on the kind of boat.

This.

When I was playing GTA Online and bought a yacht, I named it "Cerulean Dream" because that's a yacht-y sort of name. But when I have a pirate ship (or similar Age of Sail-type ship) in various games I usually name it the "Rhapsody" (and in one game where I had a small fleet, I named some of the other ships "Melody" and "Crescendo").

Everyone always wants to go for clever puns or sexual innuendo, but that always feels like something you'll absolutely hate a week later, so I'd never go that route.

It's the same reason why YouTube will recommend videos with high dislike counts - the algorithms that control what gets recommended measure engagement, not approval. If you interact with something out of disgust, anger, or hate, it will register in exactly the same way as if you react to it positively.

So basically, stop interacting with things you hate. Learn to ignore it. Stop giving it your attention.

This is a lesson most people need to learn these days, honestly.

My sister-in-law used to tell my niece that she wasn't allow to have haircuts because she preferred her hair long. It was like halfway down her back and she kind of hated it because of having to constantly brush it and condition it and clip split ends to keep it from becoming a tangled bird's nest. I used to threaten/offer to cut it all off whenever she came to visit, because I'm a rebellious iconoclast and I'd happily take the heat from her mom if it meant she could get a hairstyle she actually wanted. But she never quite had the courage to take me up on it.

Meanwhile, when -I- was in high school, I shaved my head bald except for a foot-long pony tail out the back (basically like this: https://youtu.be/FNrQOUtXYOo?t=45 - though I had mine before he did). And then a few teachers were like, "What do your parents think of you having hair like that?", and then I answered (honestly) "My dad is the one who cut it for me!"

the law doesn't stop them from asking for it back, just that they can't demand you pay for it afterwards

you do not have to give it back to them even if they ask.

The problem is - and the point that you keep conveniently and repeatedly ignoring - is that they didn't just ask politely and he decided to return their product because it was the right thing to do. They used outright fraud and implied threats of violence to coerce behavior out of him. Which, you know, is kind of illegal.

In other words, the agents hired by WotC actually committed multiple crimes, while the YouTuber was completely within his rights to do everything he did. That's why people are reacting to the excessive reaction with outrage and calls for boycott and firings. WotC wasn't in the right - they were 100% in the wrong.

The YouTuber actually has a strong case to press charges (and he could potentially win millions). He almost certainly won't pursue it though, because he's likely not going to be able to retain better lawyers than Hasbro can hire, he's probably not in a position in life where he can engage in lengthy legal battles that span years and punitively bankrupt people just to uphold a moral and ethical principle, and it's probably not a good idea to stand up to the sort of people who send armed thugs to your house when you've got a pregnant wife.

But it's not a day ending in Y unless helly is devoting all of his energy towards being definitively and aggressively wrong about something, so it's no surprise how strongly you're trying to defend the company using Mafia tactics to punish someone who leaked scanned card images a few weeks early.

They were pretending to be cops.

Basically, WotC hired a company with a looong history of harassment, abuse, and violence to recover something from a YouTuber who received it early by accident, by 100% legal means, and who was under no NDA obligations. After making almost no effort to actually contact him through legitimate channels or otherwise address the issue by civilized means or through official channels. And then those agents engaged in harassment, abuse, and implied threats of violence to get what they wanted... in spite of the fact that, because of how US postal law works, they had literally no legal right to do so (you're not actually obligated to return a product if it's accidentally sent to you prior to the street release date - you're only culpable if you deliberately took action to acquire it ahead of time).

WotC essentially overreacted to a relatively meaningless leak for PR reasons, and in the process created a PR clusterfuck of astronomical proportions. It may be the worst thing they've done recently - which is incredibly impressive considering they've spent the last few years acting like cartoonish supervillains.

At this point a fire that burns down their entire office and kills half their staff would probably do less damage to the company than they've been doing to themselves.

You say this, but I'd argue there's a noticeable difference between a few degrees, depending on where on the scale you are.

I may have trouble telling the difference between 52 (~11c) and 54 (~12c), but I can absolutely tell the difference between 68 and 70 and 72 degrees when entering a room. Extra granularity isn't necessary, but it's still an improvement on the alternative.

Kyuubi4269 posted...
Farenheit has zero value and is not used in any context with any significance

Life is a pretty significant context. Far more so for the average person than literally any scientific context.

Fahrenheit is based on human experience. 0 and 100 are the points where survival starts to become impossible without external support. It makes a very neat numerical span for environmental temperatures under normal conditions.

Celsius is based on scientific applications (more specifically, the temperature of water), which is why it tends to work better for scientific contexts. But it doesn't scale to real world temperatures as well, because you're basically locked into to a scale between -18 and 38 (give or take).

Sure, people who are raised judging temperature via Celsius will be more used to it, but it doesn't necessarily make it the best system for it - in the same way the fact we could all learn to understand weather forecasts if they were given in Kelvin doesn't mean weathermen should be predicting that it's going to be 289 degrees and sunny tomorrow.
