Anyway I had no idea how sad and, I guess nihilistic, this movie is.

I feel like I watched the whole time with somehow a hope that a guy like Leonard could still meaningfully live, but in this movie, ultimately he is no different than the idea of Sammy Jankis in the retirement home. Just a lot more dangerous to society.

Of course the most noteworthy thing about this movie is how it is mostly told in reverse chronological order, and still manages to be compelling despite that.

My point is Silent Hill 2 was written and created for itself and without looking to any sequels, and I think it's silly to let your enjoyment or understanding of it be retroactively shaped by another work (Silent Hill 4) just because that work was made by a legal entity holding the intellectual property rights.

Shit, Go Set A Watchman was by the same author of To Kill a Mockingbird and promoted as a sequel by its publisher, and I think it's clearly foolish to let GSAW frame your understanding of TKAM and what happens after the latter concludes.

The quote about Pyramid Head being made for In Water is interesting (though it seems poorly translated or something because it's a little unclear what is being said), and I believe what James says about PH when he destroys them can be read ambiguously. But in general, relying on what an author says later about the meaning of a work rather than the text itself can bring a lot of problems. Case in point-- Masahiro Ito has apparently said all that In Water is canon, that Leave was the first ending, that no endings are canon, and now that all endings are canon.

Ultimately I guess I have to go back to the word 'canon' and ask us what we even mean by it. Like, if it's only what ending is used by other works in the Silent Hill franchise, I guess I don't really have a dog in that fight. But if it's "what is the 'correct' ending that logically follows from the events and themes of the game" then I'd say that all or none are 'canon'.

Silent Hill 2 is self obviously a standalone story and the insistence of other Silent Hill titles to try to keep a continuity is a bad decision. Imagine letting your understanding of SH2 be chained down by SH4, couldn't be me

the thing with most video essays is
1) They don't need to be a video
2) The author fails to add significant value through the video format
3) They are typically bad essays and lack a coherent argument or observation at all

Most people don't actually consume "video essays" like essays though, it's background conversation about a topic the listener likes/is interested in while they play a videogame or drive

I completely agree. The god stuff is the worst stuff in Persona 4, and is just aggravated by Golden. But of course the friend hanging out stuff in Golden are great additions to be clear.

Maruki is everything a Persona antagonist should be, absolutely excellent and brings the story back down to something personal and emotionally powerful. It expands the themes of the original while putting a new great twist on palaces, and frankly it's the first time an ending choice in modern Persona actually convinced a lot of people to choose different options.

I've actually pretty much expressed your feelings about Maruki vs the Giant Eye Ball in a topic(s) before and how the former is so much more effective than the latter, and how the latter totally sabotages the confrontation of the narrative's human antagonist in 4. If you're not familiar, Curse is a move introduced in Gen II and was originally "???" type. It was the only move in the game listed as this type and the only other time you saw this "type" was when examining an Egg.

In addition, Curse functions differently if used by a Ghost type vs a non-Ghost type. A Ghost type loses 50% health in exchange for placing an invisible status effect on the target Pokmon, where they lose 25% health after each turn until fainted or switched out.

A non-Ghost Pokemon will have its speed reduced by 1 stage and then gains 1 stage of Attack and Defense.

AFAIK no other move changes effect based on the type of the Pokmon using it. So why is this? Well it turns out the Japanese name, "noroi", is a double meaning that can be read as either "curse" or "slow". So based on context, it is genuinely a different move for different Pokmon, just with the same name. That's probably also why they slapped the ??? filler type onto it after they made it for Eggs.

Gen V removed the ??? type and Curse is now always Ghost type, which has further obscured the intention of the move imo.

? The reference point is where the character is facing. They move forward if you hold up regardless of camera angle
