The important part from the article:
To prevent the West Coast Power Grid from collapsing, the California Independent System Operator (which manages 80% of the states grid) extended a Flex Alert, urging residents to curtail electricity use between the hours of 4 pm and 9 pm till the end of the week. The operator also suggested residents pre-cool their homes at 72 degrees Fahrenheit before 4 pm and then set their thermostats to 78 degrees or higher during conservation hours, CNN Reports. Additionally, residents should avoid charging electric vehicles or using large appliances.

You can argue the semantics around whether something is "on the verge of collapsing" or not depending on whether these series of steps are taken, I'm not interested in that fight, but it does call into question how exactly California is going to shift everyone from gas to electric if they're already at a point where they're asking owners not to charge their cars to prevent blackouts.

Google says that currently about 13% of California drivers are in an electric car. I don't think it would be controversial to state that their power grid clearly couldn't handle 50% of drivers, let alone 100%, taxing the grid whenever they plug in.

Either California is going to have to make sweeping changes to their power grid in the next decade or they're going to have to ease up on their push for electric vehicles, because as it exists today those two goals are fundamentally incompatible.

Edit: or hidden option c, California needs to stop decommissioning their nuclear power plants and shift to functioning green energy by building more instead.

Ah, sorry about that. So my next question why didn't JJ Abrams direct the 8th movie?

The plan was originally to have a different director for each movie. Abrams only directed 9 because Trevorrow backed out and Disney decided it was easier to hand it to one of the existing directors. The point of Abrams having a script for all three is he wanted to coordinate with those other directors to make sure there was the kind of narrative cohesion that we ended up not getting because the person in the middle, with full knowledge of what was planned for the third movie, did the opposite of all of that.

TFA was pretty good in that there was a lot to build off of. The issue was that JJ Abrams had no plans for how the sequels were supposed to turn out thanks to his "mystery box" method. It was meant for the other director to fill in those mysteries and then you have Rian Johnson, who's well known to "subvert expectations" go, "Yeah, none of that shit matters." so the third film basically had nothing to build off from hence "somehow Palpatine returned" meme.

I don't know how many times I've posted this, but he had drafts for all three movies and actively tried to coordinate with Johnson to thread plot points through the middle movie and Johnson opted to throw it all out.

Name them.

To be fair, the power rangers battle for the grid game uses simple inputs for special moves but is still able to capture that MvC style team-based insanity. And then there's games with easy inputs or Auto combos like persona 4 arena where you sacrifice flexibility in execution and exchange for ease.

Fundamentally though, most people are bad at fighting games because they're being taught the wrong lessons about how to play them. Everyone is so focused on command execution and chaining long combos together that they're putting no attention towards really critical fundamentals like spacing, "learning to be patient during a block string", or "the importance of hit confirming into slower moves". I would say 99% of the people that get crushed online in fighting games aren't losing because they can't reliably do a shoryuken motion. They're losing because they're trying to mash buttons and getting comboed out before they can even get to a point where their failed input would matter.

Apparently it's been so successful at drawing missile fire that Ukraine is ramping up production.

https://www.bbc.com/news/live/world-europe-62717569
Now for a story being reported by the Washington Post - that Ukraine has been using wooden decoys of US long-range rocket systems.

Why? To deceive Russia into wasting expensive missiles on fake targets, the paper says.

It can be very hard to distinguish between the fakes and the real US-made High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (Himars) when viewed through a Russian drone camera from a distance, Ukrainian officials have told the US newspaper.

The importance of the advanced missile systems to the battle in the south and east means Russian forces view them as vital targets to strike.

It's led to Russian drone operators giving the locations of the decoys to cruise missile ships in the Black Sea, the Post says.

The wooden replicas have drawn at least 10 long-range Kalibr missiles after just a few weeks in operation and their success means production has been expanded, Ukrainian officials tell the paper.

The Washington Post adds the replica's destruction could partially explain Russias "unusually boastful" claims to have destroyed many Western artillery systems.

"Theyve claimed to have hit more Himars than we have even sent," one US diplomat notes.

Yea, anyone adopting a large breed dog when they have a small apartment is making a huge mistake in the first place, and I don't know that you or your personal problems would really have made a difference in that regard. People don't really appreciate that dog adoption is a decade+ long commitment to a creature that is completely dependent on their owner to live a happy, healthy life, and they don't do research into breeds to find a good fit. The result is far too many people going "oh look, it's cute and fills a void in my life" and then have to return it because they didn't think it through.

What I can say, though, is that from what you said above there are 2 big things you need to do:
  1. Stop apologizing. Just stop. There's a point where it becomes more annoying to have someone constantly apologizing for something than the original act. At some point, it's less about you wanting him to feel better and becomes you wanting to reassure yourself that things are okay by apologizing again so that he has to SAY it's fine, and eventually that drives an even bigger wedge between you two.
  2. You need to ask him what he wants. You've said a lot about what you want out of the relationship, but not much about what HE wants out of a relationship. Maybe it's because you're afraid of the answer, but at some point it becomes part of the problem because your constant fear of finding out he doesn't need you has let you to completely avoiding the topic of what he DOES need. Healthy dialogue is the absolute foundation of a successful relationship. You cannot avoid it, and uncomfortable subjects, with your partner if you want it to last.

EDIT: Oh, and of course a giant disclaimer with all the of the above, which is that you really should be having these conversations with a trained professional and less soliciting feedback from CE.

I'm going to guess the person who wrote that review only watched the movies, since the goblin "uprising" was a prominent part of at least two books and a fairly major character motivation for Hermione that was stripped from the movies to streamline things. It was also ended through dialogue and a recognition that the goblins were being treated poorly, leading to improved working conditions and more rights for the goblins.

Lois dying made Superman vulnerable to Anti-Life. If Darkseid wasn't around Lois dying wouldn't do anything special besides make him a little depressed/hopeless for a little bit. Her death creates a vector for Darkseid to exploit with Anti-Life. It doesn't cause Superman to go insane.

The whole idea that Superman isn't vulnerable to anti-life because he has someone he loves in his life is completely ridiculous to begin with. The anti-life equation is Infinity gauntlet tier strong. It's not something Superman can just shrug off because he has somebody to hug.

I'm also assuming everything you're mentioning is from some sort of interview with snyder? As far as I'm aware, none of what you're saying actually plays out in the Snyder cut, other than the line about Lois being the key. I could be misremembering or forgetting a scene though.

Ahh - I *believe* she said somewhat recently that she had paid off all of her school debt (was understandably excited), which I'm sure would affect her/a person's answer. Your description of doctor's wages in other countries doesn't seem quite as accurate? Again IF she wanted to answer, it's definitely not something she has to speak to...

Pay ranges pretty wildly depending on the type of doctor and it's difficult to get a perfect picture, so I went googling for the average pay for a surgeon and also for a general practitioner, and in both cases the EU pay was somewhere between half and a third. For example:

https://www.physiciansweekly.com/how-do-us-physician-salaries-compare-with-those-abroad/
  1. United States $316,000
  2. Germany $183,000
  3. United Kingdom $138,000
  4. France $98,000

It's possible the sources being referenced are biased, but it's generally tough to find salary comparisons so I went with the number ranges that seemed to appear in the most number of results. Any site I found I ran through media bias fact check to at least make sure they have a history of factual reporting, but that isn't a guarantee of accuracy, either. In general, though, I don't think it'd be particularly controversial to suggest that an EU style healthcare in the US would require doctors across the board to take a pay cut roughly in the range of 40-60%

You do realize that gas is more expensive in the UK because they buy refined gasoline, whereas the US buys crude and refines it domestically, right? The price of gas in the US should always be well below countries that are buying the finished product in the way that somebody building their own house will pay less in total than someone who pays a construction company to build it for them, for any other case where assembly or processing of raw materials results in a lower price point than buying the finished product from somebody else who did the work.

They're not factoring in student loans, but only because healthcare reform is rarely explicitly bundled with education reform. So unless we're proposing a "drastically change everything all at once" policy, it's just the unfortunate reality that healthcare reform by itself would require people like coffee to take a 60% pay cut on top of a large tax increase, at no change to cost of living, to make things more like the EU.

USUALLY these discussions are purely hypothetical so I was curious to hear from the doctor's mouth directly whether that's acceptable or not.

Coffee, there's something I'm curious about, but my question is a bit personal so I'm going to try to keep this as details-ambiguous as possible, and I ask this with the utmost respect for you and your profession, and ALSO as someone who believes the US healthcare system is a fucked up mess: As a doctor, how much of a pay cut would you realistically accept in exchange for a shift to a more EU-centered style of medicine?

From what I can tell, outside of the US the second most highly paid doctors are German doctors, and they make roughly half of what US doctors of the exact same profession pay. In the UK, they make roughly a third of what a US physician makes (again, on average). As I understand it, US doctors are largely on the hook for paying for their own malpractice insurance, which is crazy expensive, so in terms of net difference I'm sure it's less than half, but let's be practical and say it's 40%. Would you cut your pay by 60% tomorrow if it meant a different, more globally available system?

Feel free to be as vague as possible because I understand that letting CE know (even roughly) what you make is a terrible idea, but I'm very curious what your perspective is as someone who would be directly impacted by a large shift in the industry and whether you feel like your peers would stand with you on the issue.

EDIT: and if you'd rather not answer, that's fine too, although I'd appreciate it if you'd at least say you chose not to answer rather than just ignoring the question, but really whatever you're comfortable saying.

The tldr is that the energy embargo from the EU has led to Russia having way more natural gas than they normally would, and either due to incompetence or spite their response has been to burn it off 24/7 since June rather than shut down some plants.

https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-62652133
As Europe's energy costs skyrocket, Russia is burning off large amounts of natural gas, according to analysis shared with BBC News.

Experts say that the gas would previously have been exported to Germany.

They say the plant, which is near the border with Finland, is burning an estimated $10m (8.4m) worth of gas every day.

But since June, researchers have noted a significant increase in heat emanating from the facility - thought to be from gas flaring, the burning of natural gas.

While burning off gas is common at processing plants - normally done for technical or safety reasons - the scale of this burn has confounded experts.

"I've never seen an LNG plant flare so much," said Dr Jessica McCarty, an expert on satellite data from Miami University in Ohio.

"Starting around June, we saw this huge peak, and it just didn't go away. It's stayed very anomalously high."

But as well a releasing around 9,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent every day from this flare, the burning causes other significant issues.

The closest thing to a "grounded" Harley you might like is her run in Gotham City Sirens where it was mostly her, Ivy, and Catwoman.
