Topichot take: Freddy vs Jason is underrated

I enjoyed it. I just have one problem with it.

Freddy only kills one person in the entire movie. Like, seriously? I know that the studio mandated that Jason kill more people than Freddy, but they didn't have to limit him to just one casualty.

Opinions range from "forgettable" to "my favorite Disney movie." If I had to give it a grade, I'd give it a B-. So, yeah, definitely good.

It came about during that weird period when Disney was trying to reinvent itself. They weren't quite sure yet what a modern Disney animated movie was supposed to be in relation to the animated films of the golden era. Were they supposed to be darker? Scarier? Sexier? More violent? More depressing? Happy as ever? They were still trying to find out.

The film has tonal whiplash and the story is slightly stifled by an overabundance of characters. The film has 14 characters in a movie lasting barely over an hour. And it feels like that number was condensed down as Jenny's parents never actually appear. Even if they resolved that issue, it still had issues with placing bright and colorful characters against a dingy backdrop. It's like letting the cast of 101 Dalmatians or Aristocats loose in a Ralph Bakshi movie.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/1/1/AAdlC_AADqmP.jpg

Whatever flaws it may have, I think they did an amiable job of trying to reconcile the impossible demands of channeling the brightness and optimism of 1950s animation for the cynical 1980s. They may have fallen short of their goal to make the Lady and the Tramp of the modern era, but I'm not sure that anyone else could have done much better.

Do you have a source for this? His love and dedication to white supremacy is well documented.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/8/7/0/AAdlC_AADqlm.jpg

John Wayne and Sammy Davis Jr. being friends is well-documented too. Davis lamented giving Wayne a hug close to Wayne's passing because of his physical condition at the time. Wayne's son, Patrick, said that he wouldn't have missed that for the world. There is a quote hidden mostly behind paywall articles:

When there was finally a role calling for a [Black] cowboy, John Wayne gave me the hat hed worn in Stagecoach for luck in playing it. He said, I didnt let my kids touch this Stetson. Its very dear to me. But I guess youll be able to find a home for it. The Duke was politically a conservative but he was not a racist. Im proud to have had his friendship. - Sammy Davis, Jr.

With all due respect, I disagree with Sammy Davis Jr. on Wayne not being a racist. John Wayne famously said that he supported white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility." In the same interview, called Native Americans selfish for wanting to keep the land to themselves. But John Wayne was not bigoted to the degree that he couldn't stand to be around someone who was different from himself.

I personally use the term "John Wayne bigotry" to describe someone who holds bigoted attitudes toward a group collectively, but is still willing to befriend or work with members of that group. When it comes to homosexuality, he was friends with Rock Hudson and knew Hudson was gay. (Rock did try to keep the boyfriend away from Wayne though.) He was a bigot and I don't apologize for the attitudes he held. But I also think the record should be straight of what he was and was not guilty of.

I never knew that. I always thought it was cheap that the last level in Star Road was impassable without a blue Yoshi (one that could fly with a koopa shell in its mouth). I never knew you could control the direction of those coin blocks.

You'd think that would be mentioned in the instruction manual or one of those hint boxes in-game.

His racism is somewhat overstated. He was friends with Woody Strode and Sammy Davis Jr. He also briefly shut down the production of The Searchers to have a deathly ill Native American child airlifted to a hospital.

Bigotry is a spectrum. It's not just zero to Hitler.

Not all conservatives are the same.

Some vote from ignorance, some from malice. If someone is knowingly voting Republican to harm women/LGBT people/Black people/minorities in general, they're a bad person. If Fox News told them that Biden wants to turn America into Stalinist Russia and they believed it, that makes them ignorant.

I would want to keep my associations with either limited, but a person isn't inherently bad because just because they've been mislead.

They get caught lying over and over which puts doubt on all police reports. As a society we really need to come down harder on corrupt cops.

No lies detected.

The closest I've come to "watching something to complain about it" is Avatar.

And I didn't watch that so that I could complain about the movie's politics or how ugly the flat-nosed cat people are. I watched it because I was going to Disney's Animal Kingdom -- which inexplicably has an Avatar section -- and I felt obligated to watch it. I was rooting for the villains.

Alien is a franchise that would benefit from a Terminator: Dark Fate-style sequel.

Make it star a 24-year-old "Newt" Ripley and her wife as they battle a new army of xenomorphs. Sigourney Weaver can have a cameo where she's de-aged to 50. If not, just have her alive and off-camera instead of telling us she died.

This is one movie a year isn't it? Last 2 years we had 2 movies in Lion King and Aladdin, this year is Mermaid, next year is Pan, year after is Snow White. And yeah we got Disney+ exclusives like Lady and the Tramp and Pinocchio but I don't feel like they count honestly. Those movies came out in like the 50's and 60's and were never expanded on so there's not much to influence modern pop culture because of it I feel.

I feel like the Disney+ movies should count because they knock Disney out of the possibility of remaking them as theatrical releases. They can't release a $200 million live action / CGI remake of Lady and the Tramp and say, "Oh, the one on Disney+ didn't count. That was like a made-for-TV movie." People have had their Lady and the Tramp fix.

In that regard, I think they're burning through their library too quickly.
