From GoldenEye to OG Smash, peak N64 gaming was hanging out with a group, passing the controllers around the room, and talking crap from the sidelines as you watched.

It's uncanny that I wrote this for the MK64 write-up, and the games that dropped, in sequence, were Goldeneye & Perfect Dark, Super Smash Bros, and then Mario Kart 64.

Ironic then that we have only single-player games remaining.

Wow, Goldeneye only in 10th. Above it would be, I guess...2 Zeldas, Mario, Smash, MK, Perfect Dark, DK64, MP1, and a Pokemon stadium?...Oh, and BK/BT. Hmm, that's 11 games. So which two am I overestimating?

Weird choice for me. Both games I've played, purely at the behest of my friends. NBA Jam is the game with more overall reach, I think, rather than being limited to hockey fans, so I'm going with that one, but that's only lieu of other deciding factors.

I mean...yes and no? These are mostly all heroic characters. On that basis, they should all get 10s. But there's a difference between being backed up by Amber vs, say, Xiao. You can literally call his name from anywhere and he'll appear to protect you. Surely he deserves a higher score than Amber, no?

And it's not like 8.5 is a bad score up until you're fighting for #1 and can only give 2.0 points total against Gaming. Considering she's never thrown herself into explicit and obvious harm's way on-screen, and this back-up score is heavily compromised of non-combat evaluation, I think it's a fair appraisal.

Now, if it's Amber as played by RinTaichou, that's a completely different story...

Amber is best girl.

That's probably all that needs to be said, but allow me to elaborate. Amber is literally the first person you meet in Genshin Impact (besides Paimon.) As you approach Mondstadt with the intent of trying to approach their archon to inquire about the fate of your sibling since all you know is that you'd become separated by some unknown god, your approach is halted by "Outrider Amber of the Knights of Favonius!"

Eager, enthusiastic, energetic, but very concerned with these new strangers that have approached, as soon as she sees you are (probably) not a threat to the city, she agrees to escort you back to Mondstadt. She serves as a tour guide as she takes you to the Knights' barracks and then, as the self-professed wind gliding champion of Mondstadt, she offers you your own wind glider so you can better get around. It proves to be the most useful tool you'll gain in all of your days adventuring in Teyvat. Just because she wants you to feel welcome in Mondstadt.

Her treatment of you is not unique. Amber is the person who sees the good in anyone, beyond whatever defenses they put in place. She finds and helps Collei when she's on the run from the Fatui and ends up disrupting Ludi Harpastum. She's the one person who cuts through the barriers Eula puts up to keep others away and happy to see her as the despised noble they expect. There is nobody more precious in the world to Eula than Amber, even if she would declare vengeance if you dared to call her out on it. And Amber is the lone person who puts up missing person posters for you after you help Mondstadt with their dragon problem, recognizing that all you want is to be reunited with your sibling. (This holds true even after you help other nations as well.)

The only downside to Amber is that because she's the very first character you meet -- and you get for free -- she kinda sucks. Okay, not kinda. She completely sucks. You have to be really determined to want to use her, because she's not adding anything to your team. But she'll sit faithfully on your bench, waiting for the day you need her to...light some torches...

Activity: 9/10 -- Amber's a crowd-pleaser. She'll join anything, or invite you to join her for sticky honey roast at Good Hunter.
Backup: 8.5/10 -- Wherever there's danger, there'll be Outrider Amber!
Conversation: 8.5/10 -- She's got a little bit of Anime Girl Syndrome, but she's certainly easy to talk to.
Demeanor: 10/10 -- Nobody's beating Amber in this category.
Effort: 10/10 -- She offers to take you to Liyue after everything calms down. She puts up posters for you. It seems like if she's not busy scouting, she'll be there just for you. (Or Eula. Or Collei. Or any of the many other important people in her life. But you're definitely one of them.)

I find myself without much to do this patch. I've declared myself to have given up on pushing for more from the new artifact set, but there isn't anything else to really focus on right now unless I want to farm mora leylines. Half tempted to pull Navia or Nilou just to have something to do, but I'll hold out and see what the word on Emilie is. Until then it's just casually mopping up the summertime area, which I'm in no hurry to complete.

Gaming (whose name the localization team tragically chose to write as one word) is a late edition to the Liyue cast. Every year we get at least one new Liyue character, and Gaming showed up for the first time during this year's Lantern Rite Festival. In fact, almost the entire story of Lantern Rite was about him. It is literally the only time we have ever seen him in game, but he makes quite an introduction.

Hailing from Chenyu Vale, which is the Teyvat equivalent of being Cantonese, Gaming is the son of a tea merchant who expects his son to inherit the family business. However, Gaming is in love with the art of Wushou dancing, and would rather try to make a living out of it. His father, like many parents dealing with a child who wants to go into the arts, was forceful enough with him that Gaming eventually ran away. He's now terrified of facing his father, and does his best to avoid them even when he has to return to his hometown. Which he does sometimes, because he now earns a living working as a caravan guard, and performs Wushou dancing on the side.

The thing that is uncanny about his relationship with his father is that this is the ONLY person Gaming doesn't get along with. He's introduced as super friendly, hard working, and self-sacrificing. He's generous with his earnings and his time. He cares about everyone he meets. He gives Paimon free cake. The only thing that troubles him at all is the way his father -- and his father's words -- haunts him. In every other regard, he is an incredibly vibrant, dynamic, and fun-loving individual who seems to put other people first and never has an unkind word to say.

It is perhaps no surprise that with the story of Lantern Rite centering on him, that one of the other characters sets up an extremely ham-fisted forced encounter between Gaming and his father so they can work out their differences. They come to a begrudging understanding until Gaming gets to perform in front of all of Liyue Harbor at the end of the festival. With the aid of the adepti allowing him to literally dance over the water, he wows an enormous crowd and finally fulfills a small part of his dream in trying to bring Wushou dancing to others...and in so doing, earns the respect and acceptance of his father.

And, NGL, I'm looking at the explanations I've generated for what denotes a 10/10 or a 9/10 in each category, and they all look like they were written for him, so I'm just gonna quote those here.

Let the pyro party begin!

Before talking about Xinyan, let's take a second to note that from here on out, only Kuki Shinobu represents the other elements. Without her, the top 5 would be all pyro characters....which checks out. Although it's not a hard-and-fast rule that pyro characters are outgoing extroverts, while cryo characters are frosty and reclusive, there are some personality traits that characters of a common element tend to share...because that's how they get their vision in the first place. Electro characters are strong and self-reliant. Anemo characters are usually free-spirited (and have lost someone important in their life.) That's just kinda how it goes. And it so happens that pyro characters are -- with a couple exceptions -- the friendliest. Call it their warm personality. There are 15 total pyro characters, and not all of them make the top of the list, obviously, but the current leader in the reranking is also a pyro character, and there were a number of others in the top 20. So yeah, the rest of this list is FIRE! (And Kuki.)

Beginning with Xinyan.

Xinyan is a little bit of a misfit in that she embraces the spirit of rock and roll, a new musical style that hasn't caught on in Liyue yet. Running around with huge, poofy hair and a drum strapped to her back, Xinyan is just as likely in battle to pull out her "axe" as her claymore. There are other characters who have some musical talent, but for Xinyan, it is her whole identity. (Even though, arguably, she's not all that technically proficient.)

And you wouldn't know it just from looking at her, but she's also a tremendous sweetheart. Xinyan is one of the most caring, empathetic people on the list, with a case of RBF that literally scares children. It took well over a year after she was added to the game for us to actually see her in any meaningful light, and I was forced to admit I had the wrong idea about her entirely because, um, she's kinda bad. Mechanically, I mean. She's a bottom tier playable character, but Xinyan is a top tier friend. She not only will play her heart out in any performance, but she will step up for you and has a staggeringly wholesome and inspirational outlook on the world. The only obstacle to her friendship is being accepting enough to welcome her in the first place.

Activity: 10/10 -- Aside from being a musician who puts on shows of all sizes, she is incredibly open and accepting of all forms of entertainment and leisure, and would try anything once.
Backup: 9.5/10 -- The second archipelago event was two years ago, so my memory's a little fuzzy, but I recall her being incredibly supportive of everyone in her life.
Conversation: 8/10 -- Ignoring the Texas accent her English VA uses to separate her from the rest of the cast, (which correlates to other back-country accents in the other languages,) she's not the most articulate person, but she has a sort of eloquence to her spirit and enthusiasm.
Demeanor: 8/10 -- Outside of giving off inadvertent vibes of being an angry metalhead, Xinyan is about as sweet as they come.
Effort: 9.5/10 -- She's traveled all over Teyvat just to put on shows for people, and not in the furthering-her-career sense. She legit just sailed across the ocean to make some people happy.

Unlike Bloodborne, this rallys support was much less extensive, and Xenoblade retained its lead through all of the match, completing its underdog run to win its division. But once again, when the dust cleared it was revealed that without the anti-rally measures, Persona 4 Golden would have emerged victorious, and once again a rally had been stopped in its tracks.

I should be really grateful, then. This was basically the final deciding point between my bracket and jona's. The only other difference after this point was Dark Souls vs TLOU, and we had already seen the writing on the wall where that was concerned. People point to the decision to take Witcher 3 > Skyrim as the decider for winning the contest, but lots of people took that upset. It was the fact that I parlayed it with Xenoblade winning its division that made the difference...and thanks to how good Jona was in the first two rounds, it almost didn't matter. He had me by 7 going into this 8-point match.

Arabian Wendy is a dancer for the Zubayr Theater in Sumeru. This makes her the featured performer for a company that has found itself in the crosshairs of the Sumeru Akademiya, who thinks anything artistic is wasteful indulgence, and energy that could be better spent toward the pursuit of knowledge. Never mind that there are people who live in Sumeru who aren't scholars. In Nilou's pursuit in the importance of the arts, she has not only debated a scholar to convince him that his daughter should be allowed to live her own life and participated in a coup to overthrow the sages...by dancing in a public space. (It was against the statutes, and drew the guards away.) She probably has reason to be annoyed with them considering they made her the focal point of a recurring dream that ensnared hundreds in a trap, harvesting their brain energy, but she doesn't seem to bear any malice or ill-will toward anyone.

In fact, how nice and kind she is tends to be the prevailing opinion others have of Nilou. She's very soft-spoken and easy to get along with, and is a dancer, which basically makes her the second coming of Ayaka. And just like I tease about Ayaka and the vacant stare under her onion bangs, I feel like there isn't a ton going on upstairs for Nilou, however that's being a bit unfair. She just focuses much more heavily on empathy than intelligence, which is perhaps why in the storybook event this summer, she was cast as the Forest Fairy and demonstrated an aptitude for the magic of that world which ultimately led her to perform a spell that freed Durin from his exclusion for being a big scary dragon.

Activity: 8.5/10 -- I'm not sure what else she does, but she is a performer and she would love to have you attend.
Backup: 9.5/10 -- Her most visible displays of assistance have been in defiance of the Akademiya, but that's only due to circumstance.
Conversation: 6.5/10 -- She's an able communicator, but you won't have any particularly insightful conversations.
