Ehhhhh he was a bit of a villain to the mainstream civil rights movement.
By mainstream you mean WHITE PEOPLE'S view of the civil rights movement.

I've never been a fan of the Magneto = Malcolm X idea (which now makes me not want Denzel in the role because it would amplify it).

At worst you could say Malcolm X was more of an "anti-hero" of the Civil Rights Movement, he did not want violence or to hurt people, BUT if he was attacked he would not just sit there and take it.

Meanwhile Magneto originally was a straight up villain. Magneto named his Mutant group The Brotherhood of EVIL Mutants. He was total monster. In the 70s and 80s they changed him to more of a morally grey character. But at the start he was a mustache twilling evil villain.

I don't know if Stan Lee really meant for Xavier and Malcolm to be parallels to Martin and Malcolm when he first created the characters or if that was just what people started saying so he ran with it... but if that was his idea from day one, it means Stan Lee was the typical white man in the 60s scared of Malcolm because he said black people shouldn't just let white people literally kill them whenever they want.

TopicC/D: Force Awakens is a nostalgia pandering mess
hmnut7
03/08/24 1:07:45 PM
#54
I will go to my grave saying The Force Awakens was a great film.

I disagree with those who say it aged poorly. It aged perfectly fine, the problem is TFA set up a lot of plots/themes/characters and ideas that it teases will be explored or explained in future films... but that doesn't happen.

Like if the first Avengers film was utter trash, that doesn't retroactively make Iron Man 1 a bad movie because it teased the Avengers.

TFA goes overboard with the nostalgia pandering but at the time I accepted that as it has been a long time since there was a proper Star Wars film and the studio wanted to make the audience comfortable with this new series set in Star Wars, so they over did it with making it feel familiar. I would have loved it if they just took so much of that out and focused on the new characters way more.

At the time I thought with the nostalgia done in the first film future films would be able to focus on the new characters more. Even if they followed the path of their OG counterparts they were different enough it would be fun to see how they handled the hero's journey.

Or you know... don't do that. Subvert our expectation of good film making by making shitty films. Have the second film have a mind numbingly boring middle because no one is excepting it to be boring. And have the finale film make no god damn sense because no expects the movie to nonsensical.

In a vacuum, without the stigma of the rest of the Sequel films The Force Awakens is a very good film.

Since Robotect is not allowed to count. Record of Lodoss War was my first Anime and sort of my first fantasy series. So I owe it for both.

I saw it long before I even heard of lord of the rings.

It is really good in its simplicity.

I think it might be hard for people today to watch it today because there is so much anime fantasy out there, and it doesn't do anything 'unique' compared to most of them.

But it's not fucking ISEKAI, so it stands out on that front at least.

If you like the standard medieval fantasy setting, it's a good watch.

Am I at the old man yells at clouds phase when I think the new generation is going to be severely hampered from not being able to write on their own? I wonder if this is how boomers felt about calculators.
Its deeper than that the old generation always fears and demonizes the technology that makes something they spent decades learning obsolete in months.

And its always based on their limited perspective. Most adults cant do basic math with a pen and paper one year after high school (assuming they ever could), old men yell at the clouds screaming how calculators ruined math. but it didnt, not even a little bit. Now we can do so much more math because mathematicians can now do countless more calculations they can work on bigger problems.

Oh god, people wont know how to write emails. First yes they will, they absolutely will, because no one is talking about removing properly worded emails from the ecosystem. Second most people dont know how to write them now, AI might help those who suck at it, last if it is a skill that is lost to time well survive.

My grandfathers grandfather use to make horseshoes, like his father and his father before him. I have no idea how to make horseshoes yet the world keeps turning.

We are lucky to be pioneers of this amazing moment in history, we get to shape how this tech will impact society for years to come. We could yell at the clouds about what is being lost or we could help develop it so it preserves what we care about most.

If I have to write a non-causal email to a professional colleague or large group (who I cant trust to keep it between us), will use ChatGPT to write it.

But it is important that I proof what AI wrote, for errors and to include local jargon.

Even with proofing/editing it saves a lot of time and mental energy.

it kind of highlights how much bullshit is in our language. How much filler and fluff we add to every dumb conversation.

hmnut7
02/19/24 7:39:03 PM

Elon wins because of Tesla.

While he is horrible, the technology he brought to the world could be a benefit, it could lead to more tech that helps the environment, and yes I am 100% positive he gets way more credit than he deserves for that tech, but even if all he did was popularize it and make rich douche bags like him think "it's cool to drive a car with much less carbon emissions" that's a overall net positive.

So for all the evil he's done (and he's done more than his fair share) he's done some minor good.

Trump on the other hand has done a lot of evil, yet I know of nothing positive he's contributed to society.

Maybe "jobs" but he's ripped off, scammed and straight up refused to pay so many people, any dollars he's put in the hands of average joes, he's taken way more out.

I want to be clear, both are terrible, and the world would be better without both of them... but I can point to some minor good things about Elon, I can't think of any for Trump.
