I'd be for it. It's easy for people who hate social commentary to forget that X-Men always carried social commentary. This idea would be a good way to remind them of it, and move the franchise into a relevant social climate.

Magneto was a holocaust survivor. Seems like a pretty big part of his character too. Not sure Denzel fits the role.

Honestly, you're right but the further we get away from WWII the harder it is to believe it without some kind of timey wimey stuff like with Captain America.

It would be a huge change but Magneto being black doesn't have to be a terrible idea since technically the X-Men was based on civil rights and there's a good and bad thing about this.

The good thing being is that it can really push straight into black people and America with their treatment and Magneto's hatred towards humans.

The bad thing is that it'll be too on the nose but so was making Magneto Jewish and 'hated' by the rest of the world.

We're getting to the point where having Magneto as a holocaust survivor is just not going to be feasible anymore.

Unless you start getting into Captain America shenanigans

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Makes it even easier. Make Magneto a former slave if we go by this route and decide to have him black. Besides, he could still be black and Jewish...

I know I'm sounding like an apologist but I rather look at the bright side than not. My best friend feels like Marvel is ruining their franchise by being too...PC I think that's the word?

Personally I don't really care about all that but I've been tired of Marvel for awhile now. I think they ran it into the ground with too much content.

there were a lot of black victims of the Holocaust, and he can also be Jewish - iirc, the heritage/bloodline is inherited from the mother's side.

but taking that route, I feel like Esposito would be the better fit.

Eh... I hate to typecast him, but I'd much prefer Giancarlo Esposito as Magneto. He has absolutely nailed every villain role I've seen him in. Seeing the two of them as the Professor X/Magneto combo would be cool though.

Love this idea. Denzel would be great as Magneto (or anyone, really, it's Denzel Washington). When I heard this rumor before, part of it was that Magneto would instead be a survivor of the Rwandan genocide.

I'd be ok with the casting.

I know Marvel is going to reboot X-men by having a completely new cast, I just wish they'd just have the original actors play the characters but that's not going to happen

Halle Berry as Storm is perfect, don't know who could replace her as Storm.

Ideally Marvel could keep some of the original actors, say they got transported to the MCU after their universe got destroyed and have them remake the team with the MCU versions of The X-Men who's missing Wolverine,Storm,Cyclops and Beast.

A Marvel comic writer once pitched online for Magneto to be retconned as a survivor of the Rwandan genocide. Not sure if they go with that, but would likely be updated to be contemporary.

By mainstream you mean WHITE PEOPLE'S view of the civil rights movement.

I've never been a fan of the Magneto = Malcolm X idea (which now makes me not want Denzel in the role because it would amplify it).

At worst you could say Malcolm X was more of an "anti-hero" of the Civil Rights Movement, he did not want violence or to hurt people, BUT if he was attacked he would not just sit there and take it.

Meanwhile Magneto originally was a straight up villain. Magneto named his Mutant group The Brotherhood of EVIL Mutants. He was total monster. In the 70s and 80s they changed him to more of a morally grey character. But at the start he was a mustache twilling evil villain.

I don't know if Stan Lee really meant for Xavier and Malcolm to be parallels to Martin and Malcolm when he first created the characters or if that was just what people started saying so he ran with it... but if that was his idea from day one, it means Stan Lee was the typical white man in the 60s scared of Malcolm because he said black people shouldn't just let white people literally kill them whenever they want.
