Yes, extremely successful name authors sometimes get projects pitched to them.

They get taken out for a very nice lunch and get offered a big cheque. They are free to say yes or no. They are just being offered work, that's all.

You make it sound like they sit trembling in their apartment, dreading the knock on the door, and the cry of 'you better do this TMNT crossover, or else!'.

Worry about this as an unknown author is like being a kid in a school play fretting about how they will handle their Oscar acceptance speech.

I mean, Hollywood can badger people into writing or directing certain films. They straight up tell you when it comes to screenwriting to anticipate that your first screenplay is going to go on a shelf and that they will offer you whatever idea they have lying around. If you say no to that idea, you don't have a career.

I know that being an author is different from being a screenwriter. But, should you end up working on a screenplay for a film adaptation of one of your stories, Hollywood can badger you into writing other screenplays.

Did you know that Disney attempted to purchase the company that published Harry Potter after J.K. Rowling turned them down? I could see myself being in a position where they would be like, "I know your story has the potential to be the next Star Wars, but we're going to turn it into an eight-part Disney+ series about a 16-year-old girl who discovers she's from a family of werewolves. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200 million."

Disney is straight up scary. They're like the Empire from Star Wars (conquer everything) crossed with the Navi from Avatar (need nothing, can't be bargained with). They need nothing. They don't need the next big franchise for little girls, teenage boys, or grown adults. They don't need fairies or dinosaurs or robots. They have all that they could ever want or need. All they need is to get rid of the competition. They do buy and sell careers.

Given her transphobia, maybe it would have been better if Disney had purchased Rowling's soul and turned Harry Potter into a teacup ride based upon the sorting hat. But I don't want that happening to me.

Another thing about the Godzilla movies they have, in case that matters to you - most are subbed. The US version of the original is obviously in English. The original Mothra, GMK and Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla are dubbed. I think that's it, though I think Godzilla 2000 was also dubbed when it was in the rotation (was removed back in November when Fathom Events had it in theaters for a few days). Captain Gordon's lines in Final Wars are also in English.

Here, they had Godzilla 2000 for one day. One day that I was working.

I was off on Godzilla Day, November 3rd. But they showed it on a Sunday in which I had to work instead.

The day is coming when we'll be able to download AI mods to correct faulty animation. It won't just be increasing Lara Croft's bust in the remake. People will be doing that to cartoons as well.

I promise you that authors don't get 'pressured' like that.

They get pressured into delivering their manuscript on time.

They get pressured to deliver what they promised.

But they don't even get asked to do these weird crossovers.

I know these are old examples, but Mario Puzo was asked to write Superman: The Movie based off of the strength of The Godfather. They probably didn't put a gun to his head, but what do those two stories have in common? It was a clear case of, "You're talented. You can make this story work."

And Michael Crichton was absolutely pressured by Steven Spielberg into writing a Jurassic Park sequel that he never intended. Worse yet, he used virtually none of the material from the novel. And then Spielberg himself lost interest in the story somewhere along the way. I still like The Lost World: Jurassic Park, somewhat begrudgingly, but it is uninspired to say the least.

20 years ago, I tossed a stuffed toy to my dog who dodged it instead of catching it.

The thought crossed my mind about having a border collie character who was good at dodging rather than running. The character could add a unique gameplay mechanic in one on one competition, like a boss fight who becomes an ally, while still highlighting the ability of the running-intensive characters.

I flush of embarrassment ran of me when I realized that I had just come up with a Sonic OC character. No name was given to the character, no drawing was ever made of them, and no impure thoughts were had of them.

Comet has been running Godzilla marathons on the last Sunday of each month for about a year now, maybe longer. Next week, they'll have King of the Monsters (the US release of the original, not the 2019 Monsterverse one), Godzilla vs. Megalon and Son of Godzilla, plus Destroy All Planets (Gamera vs. Viras, a pretty poor transfer). They used to run a longer marathon, starting around noon into the middle of the night, but I guess they're drawing more viewers for X-Files reruns to switch over to that in the evening. They also simulcast their channel on the web.

You can also mix things up with Pluto.tv with their 24/7 Godzilla channel. The channel runs most of the Showa films (everything but KK vs. G, plus Rodan, Mothra and recently added the US version of the original and War of the Gargantuas). To differentiate from what Max has, they also have the last few Heisei films (Mechagodzilla, SpaceGodzilla and Destoroyah) with the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy and most of the Millennium films.

Around the start of the year, they starting mixing in the Gamera films. It's been a few weeks since they showed up, but everything they have is also available on demand. The Gamera films look pretty good, much better than what Comet shows. Hadn't seen some of them in a very long time. Pluto is missing a few Showa Gamera films, though between the regular movies and MST3k episodes, all the Showa Gamera movies are represented.

I really need to look into Pluto TV.

adapting a story that you wouldn't want to?

I'm working on a couple of stories with magical or supernatural elements to them. One of them has a team with an animal theme. If that story got turned into a movie, I'm worried that someone might one day want me to write (or at least authorize) a story in which my characters fought the Ninja Turtles. Or I'm worried that there might come a time that someone might knock on my door and ask me to do the next live action reboot of Nickelodeon's Avatar. On the other hand, I'm glad that Harry Potter doesn't do crossovers. I'd hate to be all, "I'm not transphobic. They drove a dump truck full of money up to my house. I'm not made of stone."

It's kind of pointless to worry about stuff like that, since there's seemingly no pattern to who gets pressured into what, but the thought still gets to me from time to time.

Yeah, I'm tipping my hand with this one (i.e. too old to be on CE). But, yes, I remember the day from 30 years ago.

I watched the Godzilla cartoons. They were not normally shown on TNT, but were brought out for this one special occasion. It was my only time seeing them until I caught them on YouTube a few years ago. Then I went to my grandmother and grandfather's house for a family get-together. After that, I came back home and watched the remaining movies of the marathon.

I miss cheesy monster movie marathons. TNT and Sci-Fi Channel would play these things pretty much every holiday. I was tempted to recreate the experience by watching the films on Max and YouTubing some 90s commercials, but I had other things to do. It's still a three-day Presidents Day weekend. Maybe I'll cheat and relive the experience tomorrow or Sunday.

This is how I felt about Kurt Angle playing a cowardly heel.

On one hand, he was legit and it was silly to treat him as though he was afraid of everyone. On the other hand, he was so good at playing the cocky-yet-cowardly heel that it would have been a waste to have him play Johnny All-American or Rocky Balboa.

I almost regret that he wasn't two different people.

That'd be a shame. I don't want to see it end up like a game that gives you a dozen or more spells, but only has one spot for each of them.

Here's the thunder spell that'll break open the magic door. If you use the thunder spell again, it'll do no more damage to enemies than a standard fireball and take up twice the magic.

Some of these should have been saved for a sequel.

The variety is nice, but I doubt if they'll all have a practical application in the game. I could see Mermaid Peach being limited to a single swimming area with maybe a boss fight at the end.
