The way this ranking went on, and the way rwlh was raving about the high quality of all the submissions, I didn't think a selection I made by starting down the rabbit hole of "what kind of non-standard pick can I make?" would last this long. I literally started by considering classic art like Munch's The Scream before migrating into something more in the vein of Uncle Sam. And despite that, Rosie's imagery told enough of a story up front that it was able to place against heavyweights like Sonic and Kirby and truly striking characters like An Ena. (And that's just in the last few reveals.)

Rwlh wasn't the only one who did a deep dive on this submission. Before nominating Rosie, I had to look into the different visuals to make sure that my selection wouldn't be misconstrued. It turns out there were quite a few different versions of Rosie the Riveter, including one by Normal Rockwell. The name originates from a 1942 song, and the "We Can Do It!" poster was made a year later but went mostly unknown for decades. In the meanwhile, the name was mostly associated with Rockwell's work for the Saturday Evening Post. It wasn't until the 80s that the poster we most frequently associate with Rosie was even used at all in that context, and it wasn't intended to be the character from the song, either. This picture truly took a life of its own that I had no idea about until I was making sure that the intended image was being used for the ranking.

That dungeon is incredibly long so temper your expectations.

Seconding this. I did that entire dungeon, and what follows, on Sunday and it was a marathon slog that I'm fortunate I had enough time for.

Putting this here from the end of the last thread so I don't lose it. Haven't touched the game in a couple days, but Shine helpfully answered my question about the Maelle nuke build. This is obviously endgame-specific, for those who come after.

there's a few variations but the one I mostly used was along the lines of this basically triggering every attack boost possible on Maelle and then using Stendhal if it's a single enemy or Phantom Strike if it's multiple enemies. Most damage I ever got in a single turn was 75 million.

Build Check - The way this will work is Monoco will be first, he will cast portier crash to break all the enemies which will also mark them all, then skip his 2nd turn. Maelle will then cast guard down and shoot any flying enemies if present. She will then save 1 AP in order to finish with last chance. If no flying enemies, then use guard down followed by last chance straight away. Sciel will then use fortunes fury on Maelle and then intervention. Back to Maelle, she will kill all the enemies with phantom strike or stendhal. If any are remaining afterwards, then cast another phantom strike or stendhal as she should have enough AP.

The main problem with classifying a metroidvania is that some people are incredibly rigid about the definition, and insist that the game has to meet all of like 8 criteria. And then not everyone agrees on those 8 criteria. As someone said earlier in the thread, you know one when you see one.

More like I think it's a dick move to call Karo out like that, as though something he said was shameful. I like Eurydice, but broccoli topped in cheese whiz is not an inaccurate assessment of her headpiece. It's a very busy design and even if I don't agree, I certainly see where they're coming from.

And I didn't think I needed to spell all that out, but then you decided to take a stab at me, too.

Ori 2 - is a metroidvania for sure.
Ori 1 - is close enough to be regarded as one, even if it could just be called a puzzle platformer, akin to Trine.
Iconoclasts - is not really a metroidvania, but it does have some elements.
HK - is indisputably a metroidvania
foolm0 - either does not know what a metroidvania is or is taking a very wide berth on what a "Metroid-like" is.

I'm arguing that the length is a big part of what makes Hollow Knight good. If the game ended when you reached City of Tears, with Soul Master as the final boss, it wouldn't be all that special.

Afterimage doesnt feel that large even though I know its supposed to be.

I made a 100% guide and it's like 12 hours long. I've beaten the game at least 20 times and optimized the route for a moderately skilled new player to follow. That's obviously longer than kev's (or my) HK run.

HK is incredibly long compared to a lot of the genre. For an 'objective' comparison, all 2D Metroids and Igavanias are under 10 hours on how long to beat, while Hollow Knight is 27 hours. The Ori games are 9 and 12.

It's been ages since I've played a metroid and I've never played a 'vania, but using Ori 1 as a basis for how long a metroidvania should be isn't really appropriate, as most will agree it's a pretty short game. 9 is about what I took with a thorough playthrough, and I took a lot longer than 27 for HK as I bumbled around, getting "lost" in the world.

The reason HK takes as long as it does is because of it's non-linearity. After the Mantis Claw, you can go in about 5 different directions, resulting in a first playthrough that potentially is like nobody else's. In addition to playing HK several times, I've also watched a ton of LPs because seeing someone else experience it -- in often a very different way -- is still worth the time.

I don't get Karo's opinion, but I don't really get yours, either.

Hollow Knight - it drastically overstays its welcome

I won't recommend you my favorite then, since a big part of what I like about Afterimage is that it's even larger. Of course, at its core, HK isn't really that long. There's just lots of extra stuff to do if you want the true ending or want to fully explore.
