don't see why it wouldn't be, it's an independent studio who made a game. they were former ubisoft devs who got together on their own, made it, found others to help (e.g., the music), and released it themselves.

(Or whatever other arbitrary standard you want to set, but there's no questioning the game doesn't pass the eye test of being an indie game.)

People care less about the memeability of whether it comes out, and more about having the opportunity to finally play it. Saying the hype of people following it is only so they can clown on it and smoke hopium is like saying the same thing about GTA6.

When we talk about "indie" games, we're usually talking about stuff from Cave Story and XBLA forward, so I'm not going to include Doom even though it certainly deserves a spot otherwise. I'd be one of the few people who would actually enjoy a "Mount Rushmore of DOS shareware games."

Minecraft also probably should be here, but it's a weird case and I suspect people will vote it in without my help.

Apparently the game is actually uploaded to Steam now, among other things.

Store updates, achievements being uploaded, lots of strong prior insinuations that this would be the week we'd finally get a release date...I can't imagine how this game could possibly live up to all the hype everyone's giving it -- it could be a 99 metacritic score and still be a letdown -- but I'm enjoying watching everybody go out of their minds.

I think the game does a really poor job ramping up to dodge/parry timing. Most games will spend the first dungeon giving players pretty forgiving timings for dodge and parry. This one just doesn't; it's hard from the get-go. I think this is a legitimate complaint.

Also... the QTE timing is ridiculously fast and it's different for each attack. Thank god for auto-qte because even when I was "good" at action games I don't think I would be able to do this one.

The QTEs are fine. I don't mind them. They're the same every time you do the attack, and reasonably easy.

As for the boss from last night, I left rather than refighting, explored the areas I'd been to and gained a couple levels in the process, and then came back and obliterated him before he would have been able to attack me enough to kill me. I don't think the two levels alone made a massive difference, but I also had some new pictos and a weapon upgrade, and he had really low health that I just didn't have the opportunity to exploit before.

Tried playing it as a kid and it made no sense whatsoever. I would just die on the first screen or two to octoroks. Granted, I had the same problem with LTTP which I eventually got over thanks to randomizer 25 years later, but I just don't see Zelda 1 as a very compelling game to want to try, either.

5 hours in, I got completely wrecked by a (standard) boss for not being able to dodge/parry effectively. Boy, that just feels great. I was scraping by for the first two areas, but this boss waves and waggles around like a drunken master, and I have no idea how to anticipate those attacks.

I fear I may need to set the game to story mode just to progress.

People seriously gave it a 10?

Did you really look at the gameplay? The whole point is that you have to learn your opponent. You're a little weakling compared to these giants, and rather than just hitting Goliath with one good slingshot stone to the dome, David has to be scrappy and figure out how to win by not getting hit and figuring out how to get his hits in. It's as much a puzzle game as it is an action-sports title.

Punch-Out wouldn't be anything revolutionary today, but that's in large part thanks to the successors its spawned who took aspects of its gameplay and iterated upon it. I was never a fan of the arcade version of the game, but the NES Punch-out is a classic -- with or without Mike Tyson -- and deserves recognition for what it was in the video game space of 35 years ago.
