Funny how the ideal path to track her involves running back into the spire.

With another character, I would totally pick D. With Pint, we're doing this covert style. Any of A, B, or C are good. I'm going to favor B.

I kinda like the idea of JC being an old washed-up has-been past his prime. Maybe that's in line with some of the newer games, idk, but Cage does canonically win MK2 iirc.

The last two AAA full-priced games I bought were Diablo 3...and then many years later, Diablo 4. Regardless of what people say about D3, I was happy with it. D4, OTOH, I forced myself to play a few hours of because a friend had bought it, and eventually decided it was a piece of shit that defied everything the Diablo franchise was supposed to be. When it worked, it kinda worked, but mostly I found myself dealing with other players training enemies past me, or slogging my way through huge packs of mobs exactly where I'd already killed them, or doing the same repeat copy-paste events, and never actually feeling like I was playing Diablo so much as some random F2P open-world always-online game...which is what it was. Except for the F2P part.

As interesting as it might be to team up with Vance now, I don't think he'll listen. I am concerned with what's happening with the box, but if we can't follow Vaela out, it's probably time to leave.

Or maybe observe Vance's reaction? That might be interesting, too.

E: Find a hiding place and observe Vance's response to the missing box.

  • Personality
  • Trait 1: I am always looking for opportunities to abuse my position of power.
  • Trait 2: The only thing that restrains me in the present is the possibility of a long con being more profitable.
  • Ideal: Sovereignty. With enough coin, you can buy laws and loyalty. With enough power, you can protect that coin and acquire more. I aim to become an authority unto myself, above the petty rules of others.
  • Bond: The specific district I patrolled is "my turf." I protect it, and its people, in my own way.
  • Flaw: I overestimate my own authority and get into trouble when I push the wrong person.
Roleplaying Notes for Darius Rourke:
  • Core Concept
  • Darius is a man defined by the belief that power is the only thing that matters, and the law is simply the best tool for acquiring it. He's not a mindless thug; he's a calculating and patient predator who uses his official position to arrange the world for his own benefit. His physical presence (high Strength) is his first resort, but his true weapon is his forceful personality (high Charisma and Intimidation), which he uses to bend rules and people to his will. His Lawful Evil alignment is key: he believes in hierarchy and order, but only because he plans to be at the top of it. The curious loyalty he holds for his "turf" might be the only crack in his otherwise selfish armora hint of a protective instinct buried under layers of cynicism and greed.
  • Verbal Style
  • Vocabulary: He peppers his speech with official-sounding jargon ("jurisdiction," "compliance," "ordinance") to assert his authority, especially when he's on shaky ground. When he's confident, this gives way to blunt, street-level threats and demands.
  • Tone: Defaults to a tone of condescending boredom, as if everyone he speaks to is a minor annoyance wasting his valuable time. This can shift instantly to a low, menacing growl when he intends to intimidate.
  • Conversational Focus: His conversations are almost always about leverage. He talks about what people owe, what the rules are (as he interprets them), and what will happen if they don't cooperate. He rarely asks, he states. "You'll show me your papers." "That's a fine-looking shipment. It requires an inspection."
  • Sentence Structure: Short, declarative sentences. He issues commands and makes pronouncements, rarely engaging in genuine back-and-forth unless he is gathering information for a "long con."
  • Mannerisms (Guidance)
  • When on the job, he stands with a rigid, impeccable posture to project authority. In private or when he feels he has total control, he might adopt an insolent slouch.
  • He has a habit of tapping his Warhammer against his palm or the cobblestones while talking, a quiet reminder of the violence he can bring to bear.
  • When using his Commanding Presence maneuver, he will likely invade someone's personal space, leaning in close so they can't look away, his voice dropping to a threatening whisper.
  • His eyes are always moving (Perception proficiency), but they're not just looking for threats. He's sizing people up, his gaze lingering on fine clothes, heavy purses, and anything that looks valuableor vulnerable.

Raven Hildir
Class: Fighter

I have to say, this was my first time using generative AI for anything, and I was surprised by how natural and fluid the process was. It went through a series of questions that felt like menu prompts, but if I said "Could I do this?" or "What would I want for ___?", it just rolled with it like I was talking to a human being. When it asked for my character's background and offered like 10 fighter options, none of them felt spot-on, so I asked "what if I wanted a character more like a town guard captain?" That wasn't precisely my vision of the character -- that was just something I thought it would remember. And it tracked that throughout the process, and then again when I said the character was anti-social in favor of training, and when I asked about spears during the feat selection. Between this and Pint's story, I'm suitably impressed.

I was going to say to discreetly announce yourself and escape with her, but she probably doesn't see you as any kind of ally whatsoever. If she hasn't noticed you, she should still be beholden to show you the box, but there's a decent chance she'll try to vanish.

And as much as I'd like to beat a quick retreat, I have a feeling if we lose sight of her, it will be very hard to find her again. Not impossible for Pint, but likely for anyone else it would be. So while this might be ill-advised, I'm going to go with C.

  • Trait 1: I'm so focused on combat training that I'm a bit anti-social.
  • Trait 2: I am very shrewd, quickly assessing danger and whether it poses a threat.
  • Ideal: The strong are strong to protect the weak.
  • Bond: I fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.
  • Flaw: I am too self-reliant to easily trust in others.
Roleplaying Notes for Raven Hildir:
Core Concept:
Raven is the quintessential guardian. Her entire being is geared towards martial perfection for a single purpose: standing between danger and those who cannot defend themselves. She is not a shining diplomat or a charming hero; she is a shield wall in human form. Her history as a guard captain has ingrained in her a deep sense of responsibility and a tactical mind, but her hyper-focus on combat readiness and self-reliance has left her socially isolated. She likely sees social interaction as a distraction from her duty, only engaging when necessary to assess threats or coordinate a defense. Her low Charisma combined with her high physical stats points to a person who lets their actions speak far, far louder than their words.
Verbal Style:
  • Vocabulary: Precise, economical, and often tactical. She uses words like "threat," "secure," "positioning," "vantage," and "perimeter" in everyday situations. She is unlikely to use slang or engage in idle chatter.
  • Tone: Flat and watchful. Her voice rarely carries strong emotion. Even when expressing her Ideal, it would sound like a statement of fact or a tactical doctrine rather than a passionate plea. Her Intimidation proficiency likely comes not from shouting, but from a quiet, cold certainty in her voice.
  • Conversational Focus: Her contributions to conversation will almost always be practical and threat-oriented. When entering a new room, she isn't commenting on the decor; she's pointing out the exits and potential ambush points. She will listen intently but only speak when she has a relevant observation or a direct question.
  • Sentence Structure: Short and declarative. "We secure the bridge." "What's in the cart?" "He's a threat." She won't waste time on pleasantries or complex explanations if a simple statement will suffice.
Mannerisms (Guidance):
  • Constant Vigilance: Her eyes are always moving, scanning the environment. She keeps her shield-arm angled towards the most likely source of danger and rarely turns her back on an open doorway.
  • Minimal Fidgeting: Raven is likely very still and composed. Her movements are deliberate and efficient, a product of endless drills. No nervous tapping, no wasted motion.
  • Action-Oriented: When a decision is made, she is the first to move. Her self-reliant flaw means she will often act on her own initiative before waiting for a group consensus, especially if she perceives an immediate threat.
  • Shield as an Extension: The shield is part of her. She might rest a hand on its rim while listening or use it to gesture, not just as a piece of armor but as a symbol of her purpose. Her Shield Master feat is a core part of her identity, and she should look most comfortable when she has it ready.

Unfortunate that nobody liked my shatter the glass approach. Now we're stuck behind Vance. The tumbling suit of armor is a classic, though.

D -- I'm thinking he'll very quickly realize he's been duped and run back to check on the MacGuffin. In fact, there's a funny question to ask if it's worth our effort to try to go after it ourselves assuming he blows past us to inspect the armor.

E. From the closest point to the exit possible, cast Minor Illusion to emit a high-pitched shrieking noise that will shatter all the glass in the chandelier.

Technically, Pint would have to find the resonant frequency and place the sound emission in a very precise location, but in pop culture, this should be good enough...and Pint certainly doesn't know anything about acoustics.

Always been on Firefox.

Annoyed me whenever something would try to package Chrome into an installation, and thus I've never trusted it.

I wonder how big a distraction she wants or needs. Whatever it is, she has to be able to detect it and know there's a disturbance. All she said is draw Vance away for a minute. Chances are, a loud noise alone is not going to be enough. Either Pint has to get caught -- which will absolutely distract Vance for at least a minute unless he decides to kill first and ask questions later -- or the distraction should be something a bit more extensive. While the name "The Kitchen Nightmare" sounds rather dramatic, that's probably ideal since it will require a bit more attention to deal with and likely will take time to get going, leading to plenty of time to escape. The disadvantage are that it won't look like an accident, and there's always the possibility Vance has staff that deal with the incident first.

So, assuming Pint is as good a cat burglar as his stat sheet indicates, my inclination is to do a quick survey of the nearby rooms -- emphasis on quick -- to find an alternative, with the kitchen as the current plan A. Mostly, I want to know how many people inhabit the tower.

Crater
Happy Hour
Sophisticated Fight

What a Mario World - title receives rank 42 of 65. Fun, but I feel like it's an inside joke I'm not a part of. As though there's more to the appeal to this song than I'm picking up on, and I'm still looking for the deeper meaning. 6/10

Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst - Entry into The Crater -PART2- receives rank 36 of 66. This song is so PSO, it screams. And historically, that would be an automatic no from me. When have you ever seen me vote for PSO (unless Endeavour counts)? Yet, something about this track grabs me with its groove. I can't really explain it. But it's getting the nod here. 6.5/10

Antonblast - Outta My Way ...It's Happy Hour! receives rank 28 of 67. HURRY UP! Okay, Antonblast's equivalent song is better...or at least less grating. But the constant clocks -- though they might make *someone* happy -- mostly give an uncomfortable anxiety that is wholly intentional. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't have felt the same effect musically from a different, similar sound. Happy Hour is suitably dramatic for what it's intended to do; I'm just having trouble how much I like it out of context. 7.1/10

Grandia II - FIGHT!! Ver.1 receives rank 30 of 68. Hey look, it's the winner of one of the two reverse rankings I ran back in December. And yep, this is certainly Grandia fight music. Very reminiscent of ver. 4. Solidly unspectacular. 7/10

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky - Sophisticated Fight receives rank 26 of 69. Speaking of solidly unspectacular, Sophisticated Fight has to be the posterchild for that phrase. Certainly a unique take on the basic combat theme in a JRPG, and it sure makes me want to go beat up on some Winged Cats. I guess. The test of good JRPG battle music is how many times you can hear it before you get tired of it, and I get tired of SF pretty quickly. Normally context is supposed to help a track, but having played (enough of) Trails FC, I'm not especially endeared to the track. 7.2/10

Charge Cyc_es - No One Cares About the _etter _ receives rank T-26 of 70. At the po_ar opposite end of the spectrum is a track by a composer we a__ know for _oving the unexpected, which comes through _oud and c_ear. I enjoy prog stuff. I do not enjoy randomness for the sake of random. _etter _ manages to wa_k that tightrope. Whi_e certain_y not my favorite track in the who_e bracket, it is one of the more interesting, so credit where credit is due. Also 7.2/10

...never ask me to quickly split a tie on a later day. I'm always going to pick the more upbeat, energetic song.

Steam Link was discontinued a while back. While it should hypothetically still work, I imagine your ability to get support for it will be quite limited. I bought mine for like $3 when they were trying to liquidate their remaining assets. Sometimes it works well and sometimes it gives me issues. I'm content playing in front of my desk, though, so I basically never turn it on.

And are you telling me those games sell for $150+? I definitely have the disc for episode 1. I think I have the box for it, too. A friend dumped a lot of his PS1 games on me way, way back. I probably have a bunch of "money" that I didn't even notice.

@foolm0r0n how dumb am I if I only buy Baba and don't get Void Stranger?

Why, are they bundled? I'd buy just one and know that the other is available later. Might be a bad read because I'm just guessing based on what I know of you, but I think you'd probably enjoy Baba a little more based on how clever the puzzles are with subverting expectations and introducing new ideas.

Mysterious Battle
Stage 5
TBIYTC

Senxin Aleste - Stage 5 - Research Facility receives rank 30 of 61. I find myself more fascinated with the boobplate armor in the image than the song itself. Like, obviously boobplate is nothing new to me, but I remember the eggshells stockings used to come in, and I feel like the girl in red and the girl in gold have 80s era L'eggs packaging glued to their chest. Like, they're almost perfect parabolas, with a distinct spacer between them. Anyway, the song picks up after about 2 minutes, where it becomes a little less enjoyable to listen to, but also more energetic. 6.7/10

Polygonet Commanders - Brain Expander (Ruins Stage) receives rank 57 of 62. This song is existential dread. This is the quiet build-up heading to the lategame where you find out that the mad scientists have created unspeakable horrors, and you are going to have to confront them. This is the stage with that one supremely annoying enemy that isn't really that hard but if you don't fight it just right, it hits you with a status effect and you just slowly die to poison, or can't heal, or hit for half damage. And even after you beat the area, you still have to pass through it six more times before you finally finish. 5.5/10

Nightmare Kart - Miralodia Expressway receives rank 28 of 63. Some cool funk that becomes very tense when you (presumably) get to the final lap and it speeds up. It also makes for a great not-quite-ending, followed by... 7/10

Metal Gear Solid - The Best Is Yet To Come receives rank 16 of 64. Such a hauntingly beautiful piece. I know it's become reviled by many for its nefarious status as an annual returner, but if Id ~ Purpose can finally earn its flowers, I'd love to see everyone put aside their animosity and give TBIYTC a little love. Even if they don't vote for it because Miralodia Expressway's good, too. 7.8/10

Adularia (Long Mix)
Air Ride - Sky Sands
Mysterious Planet (Another World)

SOUND VOLTEX III GRAVITY WARS - Liminality receives rank 23 of 57. Everything about this song is smoooth. Surprised it ran for eight minutes. Became more mood music than vibe music by the end. 7.2/10

Kirby Air Ride - Air Ride - Sky Sands receives rank 20 of 58. This is what you get when you hire the Ys sound team to write a track for a Kirby game. I dunno about Sky Sands -- this sounds like the exploration of some ancient desert ruins. 7.5/10

The Smurfs' Nightmare - Mysterious Planet (Another World) receives rank 9 of 59. I knew from the first notes that this had to be Gonzalez. I am amazed at the number of bangers he was able to turn out using the Gameboy chip. There are songs that only Gameboy aficionados are going to like, and then there are songs that have wider appeal, and I have to imagine Mysterious Planet has that broader appeal. 8.1/10

Cocoon - Spheres receives rank 44 of 60. Soundscape songs tend to be hit or miss for me, more often miss. Spheres is..."neat." There's a certain aspect of fascination to it, while it plays in probably some kind of industrial quarter of a steampunk post-apocalyptic city. But it's not something I'd say "hey, let's put on Spheres!" 5.9/10

Awkward. Dude A is selling it to a random person who might be doing Bad Things with it, and Chick B is fetching it for a random person who might be doing Bad Things with it. In trying to avoid prophecy, we might simply be sealing our fate.

D seems like the only option that has the potential to sidestep this. But even if Pint is successful in procuring the box and running, there will be two angry parties on his heels. In spite of that, I think it's still the best option since Vaela is only going to tolerate Pint for as long as he's useful -- or at least, not a liability.

I love when a random wrestling thing I've never heard of takes over a day almost as much as I love when a random anime thing I've never heard of takes over. Or basically just a random thing I've never heard of. But those are two leading candidates for why.

When you've literally already done write-ups, and almost can't be bothered to post them...

A Mysterious Battle
The direction of life
Spiral of Erebos

maimai GreeN PLUS - Danza zandA (Long Version) receives rank 36 of 51. Very festive, like I'm at some South American carnival. The big band sound isn't really my thing. 5.9/10

RABBIT & STEEL - A Mysterious Battle receives rank 32 of 52. I must not be in a particularly talkative mood today, because I honestly have no idea what to say about anything today. It's okay. Nothing special. I might vote Danza on the day of the match. 6/10

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk - DA PEOPLE receives rank 24 of 53. Wipe out of your mind the questions of technology. Wolka dot, wolka dot...I never understand Naganuma songs, but they're fun. 6.8/10

Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy & the Liberator of Polar Night - The direction of life receives rank 15 of 54. Right after listening to Danza Danza and Da People, this is more what I consider a rousing track. "Resleriana" is a mouthful, though. Did they run out of two-syllable girl names? 7.7/10

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III - Spiral of Erebos receives rank 7 of 55. One of my regrets back when I did the tournament brackets myself was that I only gave this an 8 seed and a rough round 1 match that would have dumped it onto the 1 seed the next round. I'm not sure what I was thinking, because even on the day of the match, I really liked this song. It's strongest in the beginning and kinda wears on a bit down the stretch, but still really good. 8.3/10

11eyes: Tsumi to Batsu to Aganai no Shoujo - Kegare Naki Yume receives rank 30 of 56. The intro grabbed me. Then it decided to be a random generic anime girl song. Still not bad, but not as good as I initially hoped. 6.5/10
