Godzilla is inherently cooler and better than Kong so your insane made up theory that they're deliberately making Kong look bad would be the correct choice, if they were actually doing that.

They're not though, you're just...being you about it.

The original King Kong movie was head and shoulders above any Godzilla film until Minus One came along. Kong had intensity in that film and Skull Island. The rest of the movies make him out like a lost puppy dog. They knew what they were doing when they made him more docile in the Adam Wingard films. He alternates between acting like the Dino De Laurentiis version of Kong from 1976 -- a film which tried too hard to make the ape sympathetic -- and a big hairy version of the Incredible Hulk. He has the same facial expressions and everything.

hop918 posted...
Ending MechaG, beating the living hell out of Godzilla, ripping the wartdog in half as well as being crafty enough to bury them, destroying the eel creature in the lake, knocking Skar King's tooth out clean with one punch. But you know Kong can't have badass moments in these movies.

That only counts if you win.

He defeated the lake monster and Mechagodzilla with an axe -- an axe that he didn't fashion for himself, nor is it canon to any other version of Kong. It's like having Batman vs Daredevil and making Batman's entire strategy based around the use of the Bat-Hammer. And he didn't design the Bat-Hammer. He just found it lying around somewhere.

Son of Kong released in the 1930s, they were absolutely drawing from that, much like the other movies in this universe have drawn from older movies of the monsters.

Yeah, there's a mythology nod. But they're definitely following the trend.

They in no way made Kong look bad in this movie.

Yeah, bad ass monsters are always getting dental surgery performed with dated tunes playing in the background.

The rules are pretty simple: if it's silly or cute, it goes to Kong. If it's badass: it goes to Godzilla. I get that there needs to be contrast so that it isn't just mammal monster and reptile monster, but they know what they're doing.

I liked Wombat, but that was one of the weak parts of the film.

I recently did a watch-through of Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears. The only adult female bear who isn't elderly is a barbarian ("Barbic") named Ursa who expresses a desire to destroy the human race.

She gives up on her goal after her intended "ultimate weapon" proves too dangerous for bearkind, but she still doesn't value human life by the end of the series. She does come to respect on human who passes a test of bearhood and saves her life in the process.

Her conversations always feel a little flirty. She'll seemingly go out of her way to stop by and say hi to me. She'll make a mountain out of a molehill so that she can tease me about it with a smile on her face. Today, she made fun of my name at length. I can't post excerpts of the conversation without giving my name away. I don't know if it was true flirting, but it felt like it.

Not that I've listened in on her other conversations, but it feels a little different than when she talks to other people. She's always smiling and upbeat whomever she's talking to. She's probably just comfortable talking to me the way that she does because the disparity between us is enough that I "won't get the wrong idea."

Doing names is fairly easy if that's one of the main things blocking you. Just give her a placeholder name like Andrea or something, then get to writing your story. If you come up with a different name you like better later, it's simple to just Ctrl+H to find and replace all instances of the old name with the new one.

I know. I believe Stephen King once said that, if you had to list the capitol of Brazil as Los Angeles, it was more important to keep the creativity flowing than it was to stop and look up the capitol.

I've just never been good at following that kind of advice. I want to get the name right and not use placeholders. I guess I'm always afraid that someone will find my writing and think that those are the best names that I can come up with.

Aspiring writers will often put more creativity into making up reasons not to write than they do their work. They all sound perfectly reasonable, but they all amount to the same thing: excuses.

You don't have to know the destination before you arrive. You don't need everything to be right first time. Or second, or fifth, or seventeenth.

Force yourself. Write the fucking thing.

Yeah. I'm probably going to mow the yard, get a shower, eat dinner, watch a movie, and then complain that it's too late to begin writing this evening.

Yeah. It's easy to come up with names that are underwhelming, ill-fitting, or otherwise too on-the-nose for a character's position. "And here is the obvious Judas of the team, Slade Wolfskill. How nobody saw his betrayal coming from a mile away is beyond me."

Another thing I have an issue with is coming up with unintentional themes -- like giving characters of the same gender or same ethnic group matching initials. I had to rename two of the women in my story because I was assigning too many D names. If I had a Donna Dominguez and a Danielle DuPont, I figure people would think I was making a "Double D" joke at the expense of my characters and/or readers.

I feel like a decent chunk of that is getting too involved in planning to the detriment of execution.

Like, why not try starting and see if some of it starts coming out organically, instead of needing it all done beforehand?

I don't think I can take the "see where the journey leads you" approach. I might do that with regards to the character whose personality I've yet to finalize since he doesn't appear until partway through the novel. Once the other characters have been introduced, and their personalities are defined, I might see what's still missing and work from there.

All of the obstructions which prevent me from simply sitting down and writing my novel:

  • finalizing the name of [the primary female lead]
  • finalizing the personality of [the tertiary male lead]
  • deciding which antagonist is the one with the plan
  • giving the story a "spectacle," an Indiana Jones action sequence
  • finalizing the climax of the novel
  • revising the denouement
  • shoehorning in a central theme?

I have to be honest with that last one. It should have been the first or second thing that I came up with. However, I've had a rough outline for my story since April of last year. It's gone through multiple revisions since then, but the point is that it would be impossible at this stage to give the story a sincere central theme which drives the creative process. I've already gone through the creative process. If I want a central theme, I have to retrofit it to what I've already mapped out over the past two and a half years.

I'm not asking for advice or divulging the nature of my story. But if anyone is in a similar situation, feel to (vaguely) list your obstructions as well. I know some of you are working on stories, so this might be fun.

Old school X-Men was never my favorite to be honest. Nelvana had an animation style that, while it looked nice, limited the action that could be performed on-screen. Fight scenes are practically in slow motion and the characters mostly talk about things rather than engaging in conflicts. There were some standout episodes and standout characters though.

Odds are that I'll enjoy X-Men more as an adult than I did as a child, but I'm still not expecting it to be as enjoyable as Batman, the Animated Series or even Spider-Man '94.
