TopicWhat would you consider an appropriate cost for building a gaming PC?
pinky0926
04/09/24 11:34:25 AM
#14
Cynical rant.

There's 3 levels of how much people will tell you to spend on a gaming PC.

  • Level 1: The budget they use when trying to convince you that PC gaming is the way to go, particularly if they're making an impassioned argument against console gaming. Typically about $400-600.
  • Level 2: The budget they tell you you should set yourself to get a good gaming experience once they're convinced you want a gaming PC. Typically $800-1000.
  • Level 3: The budget you're actually left with after you realise that you needed some peripherals and after they're done telling you to swap out X part for Y part several times over, usually because "it's just slightly more money and a lot better" or "that part is being phased out and a better version comes out next month". Typically $1200-1500.
  • Secret Level 4: The actual amount of money they've spent on their own set up, all while unironically claiming that PC gaming is more cost effective: $2k+

Kind of a niche question here. Specifically what I'm asking is, what are some games that everyone says are trash but only because they're derivates of earlier entries and they haven't actually progressed the formula in any way - meaning that someone having never played any in the series will still have a very good time.

People trash Far Cry games for this reason, but I just picked up Far Cry 5 having never played any of them and this shit is pretty great.

Dynasty Warriors, another good example. Great fun, no innovation whatsoever.

There's got to be a name in game theory that describes the problem of how right wing voters are stronger than left wing voters becase right wing voters are tribalistic whereas left wing voters are likely to be internally critical.

For example, Joe Biden has a real problem with his policy on Israel which has all the capacity to help him lose the election. Also his age, his speech gaffes, etc. Lots of left wing voters are hesitant for these reasons, many consider the first problem to be a deal breaker altogether.

Not a problem for the right though. Trump is all of those things and many more, but his voters stick by him.

Corbyn vs Johnson and the anti-semitism row (UK politics) is another one that comes to mind. I got so sick to death of hearing about anti-semitism in the labour party while boris johnson continued to be the most racist prick in parliament without consequence.

This is definitely a power fantasy in the same sort of realm as Overlord or reincarnated as a slime. The protagonist is just amazing at everything al the time, he barely struggles. He makes a token effort at struggling but always gets out of trouble pretty quickly.

So that's cool for a bit of light relief, but don't go in expecting a truly compelling narrative.

pinky0926
04/04/24 10:05:30 AM
#49
My two cents, since you asked @Asherlee10

An hour is a good all round time to set aside for exercise, but that's not to say you need to spend a full 60 minutes just lifting weights. Throw in a warm up and some cardio and time flies.

I realise what's really being asked here is whether someone always has the energy to exercise, and the answer is basically...no. But equally, maybe you need to find a level of exercise where it's not a huge mental or physical burden.

Countless people get super motivated and inspired to start working out, go in way too hard and then burn out in a couple of weeks or months. If that happened to you, you almost certainly overcommitted, to a point where you could only carry out your goals when your motivation was at an all time high. The way I see it, you should find a level of exercise that you can do even on a low day. It should be a tonic for your low energy, not a poison. It should make you feel energised, not take all of your emotional strength to carry out.

I highlight emotional strength because generally that's the real issue. If you were being chased by a tiger you would find the physical energy to start running. The actual issue is that your heart is just not in that 10k run you promised yourself you would do, and that's probably because you've set "exercise" up in your mind as this huge ordeal that will ruin your day.

This is what Pow Pow is talking about when he says go in with the view of doing 2 minutes of exercise. Mentally that's a lot more achievable that overcommitting to a big 1 hour routine you're not prepared for.

If anyone wants a long-form talk in this topic, check this out. It's a little corny at points, but the overall message is very good. You have to build up a tolerance for exercise so that it takes little to no mental energy to carry on.

Climate change slowing down the orbit of the earth is something we've measured and repeated in experiment.

It's because he's leveling up and because he initially invests so heavily into strength you see that affect on him the most. An important part about this story is that he's the only one leveling up, which is why his change within a few months freaks out others who knew him before. Nobody else can do what he does.

I get that conceptually, it's just that there was no gradual change at all. He went from nervous dweeb in episode 4 to gigachad k-pop hearthrob in episode 5, with no transition in between. I just found that a bit jarring, like the protagonist was literally replaced.

Ok, took a bit longer because I got distracted. Thoughts:

Pretty strong start. The characters are entirely forgettable so far but we'll give it room to breath. Somehow it's a bit jarring seeing korean names, even more than when it's german names or whatever. But it's kinda cool.

One thing that I like more than sword art online is that the RPG elements have been baked into the real world, rather than people being transported into a fantasy world like in a traditional isekai. It's cool that they came up with reasons for why they need to use fantasy stuff to beat the enemies, and that the world is still pretty normal otherwise.

I also like that the main character is really pathetic and the stakes really high from the start. No fake in-game death.

We'll see how this goes. Episode 2.
