Kind of a niche question here. Specifically what I'm asking is, what are some games that everyone says are trash but only because they're derivates of earlier entries and they haven't actually progressed the formula in any way - meaning that someone having never played any in the series will still have a very good time.

People trash Far Cry games for this reason, but I just picked up Far Cry 5 having never played any of them and this shit is pretty great.

Dynasty Warriors, another good example. Great fun, no innovation whatsoever.

Fallout 3's pretty fun if you go in with no knowledge of how much better it could have been.

This. I believe this is the main reason it became so popular, especially considering how a lot of people who play(ed) it had not played any of the other Fallouts before.

Far Cry is a solid franchise. It's all basically the same, but the gameplay loop in all of them is fun. And from what I recall, 5 had some really goofy and fun side missions. The UFO one particularly stands out.

I can frankly never tire if just smacking a silencer on the biggest fucking sniper rifle there is and taking out entire outposts without detection.

Also, Mega Man and more or less all of its spinoff franchises (X, Zero, Battle Network) are pretty fun stuff even if you've never played a lick of any of them.

You'd probably like Deus Ex Invisible War a lot when it was new if you never played Deus Ex

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is fantastic if you don't go in with expectations about what an AC game "should" be

The Zelda games vary in style and gameplay enough that different people love some entries in the series and hate others. The same could probably be said of Final Fantasy.

Most AssCreeds
Any given Splinter Cell past the first. Pandora Tomorrow is linear, sure, but the sequencing and level design are still tight as fiddle strings.

Probably most long-running fighting game franchises, at least from the first sequel up?

Devil may cry reboot.

Hell I'd say devil may cry 2 is decent. It's what got me into the series. If I had played others first I probably woulda hated it too.

I think with DW its because I was introduced to it the history and the novel at a relatively young age. I played the orginal nes ROTK. I said who are these people. I went to the Library and picked up the Adbriged Novel. It's been a part of my interests ever since. I'll watch the movies, the series, read the annals ( btw was hard to find and read). I know most if not all the major patcipitants by name if shown. So I'm the kind to get the most enjoyment out of those. I enjoy the he'll out of 9. Yeah it's got issues but it's getting where I think it should go. I would like one where you pick a warlord to serve under but you have to work through the ranks. You can't just grapple hook over a wall. You would get shot even within 100 yards of the gates. I love to see the duels. Guan Yu's early ones are cool. I like the unlocks in 9 but I'd adjust it some. I'd use a currency to unlock the next tier. You shouldn't be able to use The main 3 warlords till way deep in the game after hours and hours. Bring in.some elements of Empires. Drop the regular #titles altogether. Like I said theres more they can do to innovate the series.

If you want to play more Far Cry, play 6 before you play any more of them.

If you hold off on 6 til later on or last, it'll be repetitive.

I played 6 first and had a decent amount of fun, but most complaints I've heard about it stem from it being repetitive of the series/not innovative enough/standard Ubisoft.

Other later entries that would benefit if you had no knowledge?

Probably Just Cause 4. Playing it after 2 or 3 and it'll be really... Rough. That's not saying it's an otherwise excellent game, it's still rough, but it'll definitely shine a bit brighter on its own

That's bethesda games in general for me. It's hard to go back to a older game even if you felt you liked it more.

Like morrowind was a mind blowing experience for me. Can't play it now

If you're not burnt out on open world crap, some of the later Assassin's Creeds can be good like Odyssey or Valhalla.

I've only played Max Payne 3, and I hear that some people say it's the "worst one" but I had a blast lol.

The original DS New Super Mario Bros. is kinda an inverse of this in that its a great platformer (arguably a top 5 2D Mario game) but because of how soulless the later games got it feels pretty much forgotten about now; still vividly remember playing the demo at Target.

The two more recent ones were really good in their own right. They may not have been to the standard of the first game, but given the huge gap and the awful second game, I dont think anybody was expecting them to be.

I feel like this game still holds up for a few reasons personally.
  1. No stupid ass power ups. 90% of the game is played with fire flower as your only power up.
  2. Nonlinear worlds and cool secret exits to find them.
  3. Fun and creative bosses, probably the best in Mario franchise.
The save only after a fortress shit was a dumb decision. Can't really defend it, but it's clear they wanted to make a new 2D while adding a few new modern ideas into it without compromising the feel of the classic SMB they were going for and IMO knocked it out of the park.

All the other games though feel like they were being made out of obligation rather than inspiration.
