Cable Guy gets shit on a lot because it isn't his funniest, but it wasn't supposed to be.

It's a dark comedy about a guy with a serious mental health issue, you really need to watch it from that angle to appreciate it.

He was made for that movie. In *nearly every other movie you sort of have to make peace with his constant over-acting, but in this it was perfect.

Truman show was an all time great though.

He's got lots of good ones. Ace Ventura 2 is my favorite from when I was a kid, but The Mask is probably the most quotable.

Eternal Sunshine is Carrey's defining moment as a dramatic actor. Absolute show stopping performance.

It is not a comedy, and shouldn't be viewed as such.

You're not wrong. I don't like to pick on famous women for falling short of flawless beauty standards, but I really didn't see the 'wowza' factor in her post- The Mask roles (still like her well enough as an actress, though).

I will kinda defend that movie. At least Carrey's performance in it. I thought he portrayed the paranoia of the character well. It's not a great movie but I think it gets hated on a little too much.

My favorite Carrey movies are Eternal Sunshine and The Truman Show. The Truman Show is a top 10 all timer for me, actually.

As much as I like the Mask, and I do think its a great film, the comics do such a better job of encapsulating how terrifying the mask can be in the wrong hands. It straight up murders people in the comics, its actually terrifying. As for his best film, that's a hard call. There is a stint of about 10 years where he was just putting out banger after banger. I really like Yes Man, though Bruce Almighty is also great.

His best role though is probably Fire Marshal Bill on In Living Color.

I love Jim Carrey, but I couldn't stand to get through even like 20 minutes of The Mask when I tried to re-watch it as an adult. Dumb & Dumber is on the short list of my GOAT comedies, and I still enjoy Liar Liar and the Ace Venturas plenty.

See, I watched it from that angle but I still hated it & didn't find a single thing about the movie funny.

It was originally intended to be a horror until the director signed on and wanted to make it more family friendly. I'm in the same boat, I absolutely love the film but vastly prefer the comics after having read them years later.

Fun fact: One unused "Mask" idea, according to Richardson, was to transform the story into one about a mask-maker who took faces off of corpses to put them on teens and turn them into zombies

What we ended up getting was at least closer to the source material than that.

There's something mystical and ethereal about the movie that I absolutely adore. It's not a feeling you get in a lot of movies. The way the sets were designed, the lighting...it made the movie look like it was out of a comic in a lot of ways. I'm not sure how to describe it. Then the way he is as The Mask, I don't need to say more there.
