As much as I like the Mask, and I do think its a great film, the comics do such a better job of encapsulating how terrifying the mask can be in the wrong hands. It straight up murders people in the comics, its actually terrifying
It was originally intended to be a horror until the director signed on and wanted to make it more family friendly. I'm in the same boat, I absolutely love the film but vastly prefer the comics after having read them years later.
One unused "Mask" idea, according to Richardson, was to transform the story into one about a mask-maker who took faces off of corpses to put them on teens and turn them into zombies
What we ended up getting was at least closer to the source material than that.
