people underestimate zero sugar/zero calorie drinks

I don't know why people want the regular stuff when you can have the same drink without the same full life consequences

Because they taste "off". Like a lot of them have a weird plastic or metallic aftertaste to them.

All of this is super bad for you but I prioritize diet coke if I'm out and need something to drink and mountain dew is not available.

Mountain dew is as equally bad for you.

I will agree to this in Canada.

In America the flavour of coke and pepsi is reversed, so adjust accordingly

What are you saying/believing? What consequences are you avoiding?

I've never heard anyone besides marketing companies say diet or zero sugar is actually a healthy alternative. I mean, if anything, the companies are not even saying they're healthier, there's just a heavy implication without anything of merit or there'd be legal issues.

The lack of sugar automatically makes them healthier than normal sodas, because diabetes is a thing. And 0 calories means it's not going to contribute to you getting fatter if you're drinking way too much soda in a day.

The real question is whether or not the artificial sweeteners themselves add entirely new risks. Most studies seem to suggest they don't (unless you have phenylketonuria and we're talking about aspartame), but paranoid people are always going to be afraid of any chemical name longer than 6-7 letters or so.

You could argue that they're not healthier than just drinking water, but that's an entirely different argument. And one that rarely holds much water (no pun intended), because most of the people drinking soda aren't going to switch. They're drinking for the flavor, not the hydration.

I'm pretty sure bleach is 0 calories, does that make it healthy?

AFAIK, all artificial sweeteners do something to your body, depending on what it is. The research behind it is lacking because it's hard to see long term effects without waiting that long. I think just about every one has turned out harmful to your body, way more so than getting control over your full sugar soda intake.

And if someone wants healthy instead of flavor, then yeah, they're not grabbing a soda. Now if you want an alternative, there's sweetened teas, juice, kool-aid, lemonade, etc. Grape juice is crazy high in natural sugars if you like sweetness.

Ehh, there is some logic there.

If you're already eating a large meal, adding a drink with extra calories isn't helping. Getting a diet soda means you are removing at least some of the calories/sugar from the equation.

If the difference is 900 calories versus 1050 for your meal, it's not hugely significant... but it does make at least a minor difference. And it can theoretically add up over time.

Most of the things we do as modern humans are unhealthy. That rarely stops us from doing any of those things. Even sitting in front of a screen and posting on social media is doing potential harm to both your eyes and hands.

There's a reason why I said "healthier", not "healthy". The point is, when you're only choosing between "sugar soda", "high fructose corn syrup soda", and "artificial sweetener soda", the latter is probably the healthiest of the options. Do healthier options exist? Yes. Does that matter if you're not going to choose them? No.

Sure, if you're going to try and create a false dichotomy between two options, you can tell whatever story you want. But that's not how reality actually works.

Who is telling you artificial sweeteners are healthier for you and how is it being framed?
That's what I'm getting at. It's all equitably bad, so trying to frame one as a healthier option is usually unfounded.

I go between borders a lot, it's true.

My guess is the fact that in Canada they use Aspertame makes a huge difference. But also they bottle in the country it is sold, so they are using water from Canada, and that tastes different.

I'll give you another one too. The exact same Chocolate sold in America, is different in Canada, and tastes a lot better. Exact same companies, they just change the formula for Canada.
