Yea I totally get why he did that now. When you're trying to plan around a menu, and you want to eat a healthy diet you end up gravitating towards the same 3-5 things and when living alone you eat those things a lot. I realized that it's genuinely difficult to actually add some kind of variety with your diet, and that basically every meal ends up being some combination of protein + starch.

So the reality is pretty stupid. Why not just eat eggs, rice, and sausage (changing the variety of sausage) ad nauseum while adding peppers, onions, mushrooms, ect to the mix? This is really no different from restaurant food.

I mean, even within that, there's a ton of potential for variety. There are lots of protein options, lots of starch options, and - most significantly - lots of options for seasonings, sauces, and vegetables to round out the meal. There's a world of difference between using eggs for a quiche, in shakshuka, or to make spaghetti carbonara, even though it's the same protein every time (though carbonara does add some pork). Don't hesitate to look for new ways to use familiar ingredients.

That does indeed happen, though. Even liking variety and making an effort to mix things up, I don't think I've got more than 15-20 recipes I bounce between, just because there are limits to the number I can readily call to mind whenever I think of how to use a given ingredient. If you get in the habit of keeping a folder of recipes, though, and making an effort to add to it periodically, it's not that difficult to branch out.

I, uh, really don't lean towards 3-5 things I make repeatedly. It's maybe 50 or so things I cycle through.

I get it. You need to eat a lot when bulking. I was eating pounds of chicken a day for years. I was a twig in high school, 6'3 165. Now I'm 230 with very little body fat.

I'm 6'00'' and 145lbs. Mainly trying to maintain that right now. Threw a lot of words at multiple AIs last night to develop a meal plan that would allow for that. Was very surprised at how little food I was eating over the past couple of years and how I was basically killing off all of my muscle like someone on here mentioned. Was literally living off of 1000 calories a day.

The chicken and eggs thing is more about bulking muscle than just eating "healthy" in general (although that's kind of a loaded term that can mean a lot of things). But I also get it now. I miss when I started lifting in college and I was like 115 lbs so all those noob gains came really easy by basically just eating like I already did and adding a protein shake on a workout day.

That doesn't really work for me anymore. But even though I still work out, I feel like my appetite isn't much different at 165 lbs now than it was at 135. I find it hard to eat a lot of meat or other protein like that. If anything my lactose tolerance is probably worse because I always hear that is something that generally decreases with time for most people. There are varying schools of thought about how much protein you should eat, but let's say for me it's 150 grams. That's 50 per meal if you eat 3 meals a day, and common meals people make (or that you can get at restaurants) are not near that. Okay maybe say 50 can come from snacks and a protein shake, but the remaining 100 still works out to 33. That's not too crazy for a lunch and dinner, but lunch and dinner need to pick up the slack from breakfast because most breakfast foods (i.e. oats, bread) are a negligible amount of protein. Yes, eggs have protein, but I think it's like 6-7 g per egg, so I can see where guys eating a half dozen at a time comes from. I just cannot eat that many eggs. There is sausage too but sausage is pretty processed and not good for you. I do Greek yogurt sometimes but if I had to guess I'd top out at around 20 g worth.

Weren't you saying you were slightly overweight not that long ago? Now you sound pretty skinny, considering you have an inchish of height on me and I have 20 lbs on you. But yeah eating 1000 calories a day I'm not surprised you would lose weight so drastically.

Nope. It's egg drop soup with chicken. I've never made chicken soup with egg drop.

If you make beef broth, but then add chicken to it, is it chicken soup or beef soup?

Eating the same thing over and over is the easiest thing to do and it saves money if you find something cheap that you don't mind eating regularly. I don't really get bored of having the same meals so I used to do this all the time.
