My almost 2 year old was fighting his sleep extra hard tonight for 2 hours before falling asleep just before 10PM. Around 11PM, he woke up screaming in a way that I have never heard him scream. My wife tried to calm him down but she told me we had to take him to the ER as he might have had a few seizures. We are both trying to not panic as we await a room for him. It is especially hard as he spent 9 days in the hospital when he was a month old.

i didnt even know that was possible

checked the symptoms and it is as if someone is just experiencing a nightmare/night terror

this worries me now cause my sib does this frequently; my anxiety was enough for a couple lifetimes as is

i agree. i had a seizure once. it was heat related from not drinking enough water and little/no air condition. had a messed up back for a month from that incident.

He fights sleep very hard. On the weekends, he only naps in the car and still fights bedtime.

I can confirm. Even through my friend had a head injury. They were always brought on by poor sleep or no sleep. There was about a week where she didn't sleep at all.
She told me she had themwhen I first started to help her. Scary. She would get rigid get a vacant stare hands would grip the closest available thing. She was aware and not aware. I would ask her about them after she had them. I also think they were the at the origin of what caused her to go blind

fwiw, seizures aren't rare when it comes to babies/little kids.

my cousins (a man and woman now), for example, would sometimes have seizures when they were toddlers, and their mom would just strip them to their underwear to help cool them, I guess.

but still, it's still best to have things checked.

Sorry for the delayed response. It turns out it was not a seizure but he held his breath for so long that he turned purple and stiff. He has had some pain from teething as he is 22 months old which explains things. He is doing better now, but nearly 4 hours at the ER was quite tiring to say the least.

night terror was my thought from the description.

my 3 year old has been getting those. Wakes up screaming and cant be calmed down. Eyes wide open but not really awake. Scary but ultimately not dangerous. All we can do is rub his back and make sure he doesnt trash his body into the wall

It is incredibly worrying considering a past experience when he was barely 1 month old. My wife and I took him to the doctor who did his ear tube surgery a few months ago. There was some ear wax build up that the doctor took care of, but it looks like it is teething related.

Thats good news. Sorry you are going through it. Being a parent is awesome and frightening at the same time. The helplessness sucks so much some times.

I know it's not going to help with the worry, but you are clearly attentive, caring, parents doing all that can be done.

Thank you. He went to sleep for several hours once we got home, but did not nap today. Now if only he would fall asleep and go to bed on the count of everyone being tired right now.

4 hours is actually a short time for the ER. My mom asked to be taken today. She thought she was having a stroke. Her head suddenly felt like it got hit and she had brain fog and trouble communicating. Spent 6 hours there with no real answer on what happened - negative for stroke. She got better, but we dont know the root cause.

If you get into an ER quickly, it's convenient but it's not necessarily a good thing.
Heart rate/rhythm issues are the best things to have when showing up at an ER. The triage nurses do not fuck around with that.

For example, the first time I had this happen to me it was way late at night, so I arrived at a mostly deserted ER with mild chest discomfort. It was remarkable seeing the system leap into action once it was clear my heart rate was ridiculous (well over 200 bpm).

The ER was at a Children's Hospital specifically and I think in light of what we thought it was, that accelerated getting us back. He certainly seems better since he is back to his fighting his sleep for over 2 hours now...
