BBC News - Huntington's disease successfully treated for first time - BBC News
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cevz13xkxpro

One of the cruellest and most devastating diseases Huntington's has been successfully treated for the first time, say doctors. The disease runs through families, relentlessly kills brain cells and resembles a combination of dementia, Parkinson's and motor neurone disease. An emotional research team became tearful as they described how data shows the disease was slowed by 75% in patients.

It means the decline you would normally expect in one year would take four years after treatment, giving patients decades of "good quality life", Prof Sarah Tabrizi told BBC News. The new treatment is a type of gene therapy given during 12 to 18 hours of delicate brain surgery. The first symptoms of Huntington's disease tend to appear in your 30s or 40s and is normally fatal within two decades opening the possibility that earlier treatment could prevent symptoms from ever emerging.

Some good news for a change, see what happens when you trust scientists and doctors and not insist that random painkillers can cause autism.

This is incredible! My father was taken due to early onset dementia and this seems like major progress in that area.

Since Huntingtons is a genetic disease it will be possible to screen and keep an eye on children of patients with the disease and see if they need treatment early.

Some with the disease choose not to have children though, for very understandable reasons.

That's awesome. I had a coworker who's dad had it and it sounded aweful. And he had to take a test and learned he will have it to. Such a terrible disease.

Maybe one day, they can find a way to CRISPR this one away. Treatment to delay onset by 75% is a massive win, however.

Come on. It's not like it's cancer. Or childhood hunger. Why would the republicans possibly target this?
