I think the quote specifically is bad because people read the next sentence and go ok yeah I get it, but the entire context of his actual beliefs on empathy (that its fake and only used to trick people into taking action) make him more ghoulish than the out of context quote does alone.

I mean I certainly don't think he actually lived that next sentence at all. He just said it, doesn't mean he believed it. I personally don't think he had sympathy or compassion for any marginalized group. I also confess I have not sat down and listened to his podcasts or anything at any length, not willing to torture myself that way. I just know that particular quote is one I've tried to refrain from using as a knock against him because it can easily be countered by the next sentence he said; but again, I don't feel it's a sentence he actually lived by as shown by the many other things he thought and said.

Ugh, this is exactly his playbook though - say something inflammatory but hedge it with a bunch of stuff around it that lets people be able to infinitely filibuster you when you point out the inflammatory thing he said. "That's not what he said! You're taking it out of context!" It is extremely clear to me, even with the surrounding context, the message he is trying to convey; empathy is weakness.

Maybe so, but if my boss ordered me to make politically partisan statements while performing my functions as an employee I would still be in violation for following that order.

Who is in charge of dealing with reports of Hatch Act violations? I know nothing about the subject, but I feel like it's a Trump appointee who will just throw out any complaints about this. And if it somehow goes to court, eventually SCOTUS will say they did nothing wrong. But (thanks to laziness) this'll just mean nothing happens rather than actively punishing people who reported it.

You have to go to osc.gov, click the green "file a complaint" button, then the blue "online filing portal" button, then log into your "login.gov" account (or set one up if you don't have one) and then it's just around 10 pages of prompts to fill in and you're done!

The head of OSC is appointed by Trump so you are probably correct, but I don't know how many of the OSC's 140~ employees are career employees or how many get appointed. There have already been 3 people placed in charge of the OSC since the beginning of the year, with Jamieson Greer being the current acting executive.

He was a martyr for the moment, but soon theyll move on to the next attempted or sucessful assassination.

Definitely feels like his moment is already done. Maga Mormon Church Shooting really seems to have caused Republicans to want to stop talking about gun violence for while unless they get a new left winger to blame. They also made a huge stink about having a ton of left wing evidence on the ICE shooting guy but that turned out to be a lie, so all they're sitting on is the bullets which have become more of a meme than anything.
