Trump described the attack as "another targeted attack on christians" which is pretty laughably off base. If anything the perpetrator was pro-christian and anti-mormon.

Now it is true that nearly all mormon people self-identify as christian, the reverse does not hold true. Many christians do not include mormon people to be among their number. The guy who did this attack definitely seems to fall in the anti-mormon group of christians.

My personal understanding is that there are enough fundamental differences that it would make sense to separate the two religions, but I would wager that mormons get a lot of mileage out of the association and being able to recruit people by saying "well we're basically Christians too".

But other than knowing he was ex-military and politically supported Trump we don't know why he felt strongly enough about mormon people to do something like this.

My understanding is that every Abrahamic religion has a deep envy of the older religions, but the older one see them as a toy religion. Islam is bad enough being less than 1500 years old, but Mormonism is seen as a total joke.

That said, it doesn't matter. As always, domestic terrorists are psychos who do not follow reason or culture. They are almost always maga/religious/channer/accelerationist because that is the only place to find entire support systems based on psycho anti-reasoning.

The whole JK and Emma Watson thing once again proves that there's no point trying to be civil or take the high road with these people.

It's very clear that people who have different values (as well as live in DIFFERENT REALITIES) cannot peacefully coexist.

Its not just him, theres a movement on the Right to rail against empathy because if you empathize with something outside of yourself youre obligated to do something about it, and the actual moral position is to help yourself.

Empathy is extremely difficult and rare in humans. Sympathy is the default emotion that we learn as babies though. That's what Kirk was saying, to value sympathy and reject empathy. Sympathy means you can be the father or the police man or the slave owner, while empathy requires that you feel like an equal with others.

I'm just not for using that particular quote because it's the perfect target of the movement of people that believe Kirk wasn't a bad guy. The full quote talks about having sympathy and compassion because empathy is a bit more difficult. Inherently, there's nothing wrong with that.

A lot of the most popular anime and manga are deeply political and not even in a way where it is open to interpretation. There a rumor that the IRS has contingency funding for 5 additional business days of work.

This would suck because I was looking forward to so time off after working so much overtime this year, but it's weird because we haven't heard anything about this from official channels yet. If we're supposed to report to work tomorrow no matter what happens with the funding then I don't see why they wouldn't have made an announcement by now. (The probable answer is incompetence)

Also an email was distributed to the entire Treasury department about half an hour before my shift ended that specifically talked about how hard Trump was trying to avoid a shutdown and how if there was a shutdown it would be because of the Democrats.

I'm 99% sure that it is a violation of the Hatch act so I'll be figuring out how to report that after I get home from my dentist appointment. It was pretty grossly partisan in a way that has no business being in official government communications.

Yeah, I got that too at my agency. "Grossly partisan" is exactly how I'd put it. I've never seen that type of language used anytime before around the possibility of a shutdown.

I think the quote specifically is bad because people read the next sentence and go ok yeah I get it, but the entire context of his actual beliefs on empathy (that its fake and only used to trick people into taking action) make him more ghoulish than the out of context quote does alone.

Certain swathes of the modern anime fandom is in a constant state of denial or ignorance over the fact that their art form was built by radical Marxists, feminists and (especially) environmentalists in the 70s, 60s and earlier, who liked reading (and adapting) western literature and comics - classical and modern - and that it is, furthermore, arguably in a state of steep creative decline due to the industry becoming increasingly commercial and insular, and decreasingly literate. And that the same thing is arguably happening to American media, but failing anime is more appealing than failing...whatever, so they keep buying the body pillows.

It's....a confusing tactic because....these people work for the government. They know what's going on and have already formed their opinion. Nobody is seeing these and going, "woah, what, really? I had no idea!". If anything it just lends to anger the employees pissed off at their BS into disliking them even more.

The IRS has been dragging their feet on sending on a sizable tax refund to me. After yet another phone call, they agreed to send it, only for me to recently get a letter saying they 'needed more time', whatever that means.

Just another way this organization has tried to screw me over year-after-year. I've been in the right every time they try to pull something on me, but I wish I didn't have to spend hours and hours on the phone every single year to resolve it.

I just watched the quote in context and I fail to see how the context makes it any less dumb. He's still failing to explain how empathy is a "made up new age term" when the term has existed long before new age was a thing or how it does a lot of damage. A dumb quote is a dumb quote, regardless of context.
