The concept of cultural appropriation is itself cultural appropriation. green_dragon posted... I disagree. If a white person were to dress in black face I would think it's ok for people to be outraged at that.Yeah, I don't think most people really understand what is meant when people generally speak about cultural appropriation (negative). It's dependent on cultural and historical contexts, which for some reason makes it really hard for stupid people to grasp it. There's a reason why nobody gives af if you dress up as a ninja but it's really fucked up to dress up as an indigenous American with a feathered headdress. Questionmarktarius posted... At what point has blackface ever been "cultural appropriation"?Yeah, it's appropriation at its absolute worst, because it is a representation of a *stereotype* of black people. And that is ultimately what most negative cultural appropriation ends up being... unless you're going to claim that those shitty indian halloween costumes are EITHER inaccurate representations and stereotypes OR that they're not cultural appropriation. They're both. --- Hi ... Copied to Clipboard!

Questionmarktarius posted... ...is it too late for the Village People to add a ninja?Hmm, he might be too quiet for their style. Edit: To elaborate, I will give some examples of what would be neutral/positive vs negative cultural appropriation from my own life. My grandparents spent some time living in Thailand. When they did, they commissioned a table be made for them. In fact, they bought a lot of furniture while living there. We inherited this furniture. It's really beautiful, but I don't know the meaning behind some of the carvings in the tables (mostly animals/plants). That said, no harm was caused by this, and my grandparents were very kind and respectful people to those they met. My ignorance is perhaps a bit unfortunate, but I'm not misrepresenting the furnishings either and I try to treat them well. On the other hand, I was gifted a little decoration that has always made me really uncomfortable. It's carved in dark wood and fashioned to look like two people carrying whatever you put on top. You get the idea, it's just, it's yikesy af. I have no idea what to do with it because I don't like having it and I don't want it to end up in someone else's house either. It's the historical and cultural contexts behind such imagery that make it awkward for me to own such a thing, let alone use it, and in a place where most of the people are white and a lot of them are overtly racist and espouse slavery apologia (god I wish I lived somewhere else lol). So I just... hide it in a cupboard. >_> --- Hi ... Copied to Clipboard!
