Watched the first 3 and taking a break.
It's somewhere between the first and second seasons for me, but I'd say nearer the first season.
The intensity and investment in characters is back which I feel was sorely lacking in
season 2.
Also, yeah the VIP's are better but they're still dreadful. They're better in episode 3 than 2 but yeah.

Not bad in general, some great tension towards the end. Felt like I didn't quite the cathartic ending I was looking for though (with the brothers and the game in general, and the VIPs just disappearing when they should have suffered fucking awful, horrific, violent deaths - like at least give us that). Front Man being much less prominent really hurt it. Also no Thanos because nobody else in the game had his charisma. The subplots often weren't great though the NK lady was good.

Also lmao @ that ending. Fucking sudden, inexplicable Blanchett. I genuinely couldn't stop laughing.

finished ep 6, liked it a lot overall but do have some comments

i gotta say i quite enjoyed the baby wins twist. but also i kind of didn't like it because it happened due to the sheer fucking stupidity of everyone except seong. like 7/9 people at the end were absolute morons.

agreed on wishing thanos was there at the end, he would have made a way more unlikable and interesting villain than 'generic dude who owed 10 billion'. especially since he had the plot relevance to baby daddy. also, baby daddy's motivations switching around like 432 times at the end was 'what'

i also really wish that 011 ended up rescuing the kid and instead of going to search to find her missing daughter, was able to give up on the search and move on by raising jun-hee's kid. i was kind of unsatisfied that her character arc was so entirely separate from everything else and thought it would circle back to connect with that happening, especially since we still don't actually know if she found her daughter.

Really hated the whole baby thing. Once that little gremlin got a player number it was clear as day she would be the winner, with the protagonist sacrificing himself for her in the final. They're not going to kill off a fucking newborn infant.

Baby living is different than baby winning.What I have objection to is making the baby an actual player in the game and thus dramatically reducing the possible outcomes.

Finished.

Man. Fuck the VIP's. They add nothing and they're so fucking annoying. though i will say Gi-Hun's mom is somehow a worse voice actor despite having like 2 lines. I liked the drama and tension in the build up, the baby surviving was obvious but how they got there was interesting enough. I definitely preferred it to S2 which was super disappointing. I thought the moral was going to be there is good in everyone but really the moral is that rich people never get their comeuppance. Lame. Predictable yes but the journey was a vast improvement on S2. I just wish it tied up more of the loose ends.

Oh and why the fuck is Blanchett even in an American back alley fighting bums. Like you can't find a single American actress to do that cameo?

the problem with this show is the same problem with danganronpa - it gets less interesting to me the more characters get killed off

Only one episode in to be fair but I wholeheartedly agree. They filmed these together, its clear Netflix just wanted to milk this cash cow a little while longer. This is essentially season 2b.

But yeah, I watched the first episode of season 3 last night and it diminished my interest a fair bit. Feels like that all shouldve been condensed into roughly 15 minutes. Im still going to finish, but I went from hyped to dutifully choosing this over video games

And as for getting less interested as characters are killed off, I was missing Thanos quite a bit in 3.1

Binged it the first night, thoughts on season 3:

-Liked the Hide & Seek and Jump-rope games

-The detective storyline throughout the entire show was so pointless. He did nothing except for get a bunch of people killed in pursuit of seeing his brother twice. Funny gangster guy was the only useful one out of that storyline and only thing that kept it somewhat entertaining.

-How did they not have the VIPs get it? The entire point of having them be completely insufferable for several seasons is that it would make the payoff of them getting got all the better. With them just getting away they are now just the most insufferable characters possible.

-The setup for 456 to kill himself in the last game felt so forced. Like oops, father killed 100 at that moment for no reason, then lunchbox decided to kill himself early just to spite the other two, then they fight to the death without first pushing the button.

I hate that he didn't get an actual worthwhile showdown with his brother but he had an effect. Or am I misunderstanding something?

I mean, the reason why the VIP's don't die gruesome deaths is because they don't in real life. It's the same reason the game continues. It's because this show is more interested in it's class division metaphor / allegory than it is on delivering the action movie payoff.

very limp set of episodes imo and I agree ending was predictable, last two episodes were ehhhhh. Glad it's over (until inevitable international spinoffs?) and not sure if I'll watch series again at some point? i think I'd go 1 > 2 > 3, the front man being part of it in S2 was really a highlight.

there is one thing that is bothering me more than it should: Starry Night / Hide and Seek being the first game where the game forced players - at least half the players - to directly commit murder. Tug of War is the only other game that came close but I still wouldn't consider that at the same level. Everything else was the game design itself killing you, or the SG employees killing you, plenty of optional murder opportunities but none where you are forced based on the game rules to directly murder another person to stay alive yourself. Something about that bugs me!!

Felt like having the games continue sends that message enough that they could have given the payoff of at least SOME of the VIPs suffering horrible fates.

And was thinking that the defector triggered the explosion, but ah yeah that was coast guard showing up. Seems like she prooobably would have blown it all up on her own anyways though.

The detective's pay off was shouting why at his brother then becoming a dad to a child he's never met and becoming a billionaire. It was a weird pay off.

I mean it only forced half the players to become murderers. The other half could hide, but yeah the whole point was supposed to be what will people do for money. NOT what will people do to save their own lives.

had some good moments, but ultimately pretty mixed on it. most of the baby stuff just did not land for me and that unfortunately drags the season down a lot just by itself. they also offed most of the likeable characters either in game 4 or early in game 5, which didn't help. Hyun-ju's death in particular was so obviously coming when she decided not to leave that it was just annoying, though the game made up for it with the ending and offing the shaman.

games 4 and 5 were neat. game 6 was undercut by everyone just being dumb as fuck. except 039 tbh, I respect the pettiness

was generally content with the ending although In-ho giving Gi-hun's daughter his bloody tracksuit is kinda fucked up

Just finished it.

I didn't mind the ending as a whole but the way game 6 played out was so fucking stupid. It was obvious that the end goal was going to be Gi-hun sacrificing himself for either Jun Hee or the baby in some capacity. There had to be a better way to get to that point without everyone in game 6 being an absolute fucking moron. His hands were tied once it was just him and the baby but he didn't even know what would happen to the baby after he jumped off. And just how we got to that point was so ridiculous

I feel like this is how I would have been. I liked season 1 until they revealed the old man as being part of it. That was enough to make me not bother, because I could see how future writing would be. But I still read the details of 2 and 3 and glad I spent that time on other interests.

This is actually a good take. I agree with this.

As others have mentioned, VIPs were especially dull outside of a few lines of dialogue.

A lot of stupidity all around in that ending game. I won't even go into it.

I do like that it seems to set up an American Squid Games series. Like, this one is over, but they could start up another 3 season series set in Los Angeles with different characters.
