Surprisingly close to a majority. I expected a minority either way, but things really swung quite dramatically against the Conservatives. Liberals even got the lion's share of the popular vote, too, which hasn't been the case in the last couple elections.

Polievre also lost in his own riding, which is just funny.

Not specifically anti-Trump, but recognizing the overt threat Trump is posing to the country and committing much more strongly to fighting that than the Conservatives did. Prior to Trump's win, Polievre was generally pretty pro-Trump, which was a popular position when the prevailing sentiment was that people were tired of Trudeau being "too progressive" and wanted to "own the libs," in line with the broader global rise in far-right sentiment and being mad at "the woke" because some pundit told them to be.

After Trump won and immediately started threatening annexation, though, being pro-Trump became Canadian political suicide. Toss in that Polievre's platform was little more than "Trudeau bad" and "carbon tax bad," and that Trudeau stepped down and Carney opted not to renew the carbon tax when April 1 rolled around (which I'm not a huge fan of, because the rebate program meant ~80% of Canadians made more from it than they spent and I was quite squarely in that 80%, but politics is politics), and he fell flat on his face.

Basically, Polievre was a right-wing populist/nationalist, but then Trump both fanned the flames of Canadian nationalism and also forcibly decoupled it from the right wing. Carney barely had to do anything except distance himself from Trump (though it also helps that he's a banker by trade and has considerable experience managing major financial crises, which is a more appealing prospect for a leader at the moment than a career politician).

Yep.

I'm going to be honest, everyone is unbelievably lucky that US foreign policy and economic policy is so disastrous. Including Americans.

I'd rather NOT deal with economic calamity but economic calamity avoids the much worse thing that's coming down the pipe.

Really baffling that cons couldn't win this, the bar was so low. Honestly Carney seems like a smart guy but most of the liberal party is the same as under Trudeau so I expect most policies to remain unchanged.

I believe that this will result in the end of global US dominance in favor of China.

While the US is floundering its foreign policy goals and souring its former allies' relationships, China is making inroads all over the world.

I do believe that this is a good thing.

As for the US, this downfall was pretty much set in stone the moment Citizens United vs FEC (the decision that allows the wealthy to purchase elections) went down. The fear and greed of the oligarchs were inevitably going to paralyze US systems and they would shoot themselves in the foot. What we're seeing now is the end product of that.

We're all just incredibly fortunate that they chose a bunch of incompetent morons as advisors, cabinet and staff. They could have very easily picked a Henry Kissinger type to advise foreign policy.

I believe this change will be a good thing because the US foreign policy has been downright diabolical throughout its existence.

I don't live in Canada so I don't know what would be better for them right now: liberal or conservative. But with the way things are going down south, the only rational choice seemed to be the liberal party because you've got a guy who is clearly not kidding about the 51st state rhetoric in office, and conservatives up there have been bad at messaging about it.

Canada had their choice robbed by Orange man, but I think the choice they made was the best choice for right now.

You believe, you don't know. You also don't have a firm timeframe in mind. Your initial claim was that these actions will "improve" other countries. When? How? Will China dislodging (if) the USA from leading global hegemony stop the USA from having bad foreign policy? Is China's foreign policy somehow less imperial than the USA's? Is China devoid of oligarchs with influence over domestic and foreign policy?

Henry Kissinger WAS an incompetent moron that advised (poorly) on foreign policy >_>.

You didn't address the fact that them not being #1 doesn't mean that they don't have power.

If the USA ends up as #2 or #3....does that mean that automatically they are going to stop affecting others? Does it automatically mean that the new global power-structure is going to benefit everyone?

If the most genocidal country in the history of the world drops rank to #2 that isn't going to eliminate the issues you're concerned about.

Trump is so bad that he fucks up the right-wing in other countries. See also, Germany.

Also, McDonald's is reporting Covid-levels of sales slowdowns, and Coke is taking a big hit in international sales as well. Basically, America as a whole is being rejected in all forms across the world. But the same voters who got us into this mess will still insist that the world "respects America again" because of Trump.

Depends on which chunk of those 'same' voters. You have the one set that would have voted for "45" regardless, and then you have the other set that were voting for him just for lower prices on eggs.

I'm sure the latter group isn't insisting anything except that they wish they had a do-over.

What are you talking about? Egg prices are down 93, 94%! This must be true, because the president said so and the president would never lie about a thing like that.

Fair point. The MAGA faithful are the ones with a hilariously delusional view on...well, everything, but Trump in the view of the world in this case. The low-information types (again, I know that's also MAGA, but I'm trying to stick with the standard terminology, here) were mostly the suckers that thought he'd *somehow* help the economy. And there is indeed no shortage of examples of buyer's remorse from this crowd.
