I think the cutoff should be 4 iconic Zeldas: Zelda 1, LttP, OoT, BotW. These are the 4 that were major game changers not only in the series, but the game industry as a whole. Wind Waker has an argument to be close, and might've been if they had stuck with the cel style, but they abandoned that pretty quick. Majora's Mask could have an argument, but it's kind of an outlier, so I find it hard to consider it an "iconic" Zelda. I always think of WW > SS as the Zelda formula games, so yeah, none of those really feel iconic. I picked LTTP/OoT/BOTW. Zelda 1 is a decent argument but I never played it so its hard to say. Yeah, I put ALTTP and BotW but thinking about it, it's probably Zelda 1 over ALTTP. BotW is absolutely 2nd place for anyone who didn't specifically grow up with the NES/SNES games, since I think widespread recognition even amongst non-fans of the series is the most reasonable standard for "iconic". --- Perhaps the golden rock was inside us all along. ... OoT BotW Zelda 1 There's a good argument for ALttP as the originator of many recurring motifs in the series (Kakariko Village, Lost Woods, the Sages, Master Sword, the list goes on and on), but other titles have basically supplanted its claim to the most iconic version of those things. Zelda 1 meanwhile I think retains most of its original spirit. Ocarina of Time and Breath of the Wild are the top 2 without question. I would give it to LoZ for #3. Something about being the first one and 8bit will keep it relevant in a way for a long time to come. Do you think the commercial performance is enough for the purposes of this topic's question, though? Top three most iconic? The Legend of Zelda established the franchise; Ocarina of Time brought it into the 3D era while inspiring a new generation of fans; Breath of the Wild skyrocketed the series' financial success far and beyond what came before it, which in that case I would say is enough. LttP (2D Zelda) OoT (3D Zelda) BoTW (Open World Zelda) I'll be the one who says LttP > Zelda 1. So many of my friends who owned Zelda 1 never actually got anywhere in Zelda 1 due to it being opaque, confusing, and/or repetitive. Super Metroid is more iconic than Metroid. Majora's Mask took years to be considered anything other than a weird experiment. Wind Waker's art style backlash is also more notable than the game itself. They're still iconic because almost every mainline Zelda game is (except for Skyward Sword), but they're like two tiers below the top echelon.
