papercup posted... For real though, I hope we get a Kirby announcement. Kirby could go either way. I'm expecting Mario Kart 9 and Metroid Prime 4 to be announced as launch titles, the former because it's a major flagship series and the latter because the timing just works out to split the release between both systems, but past that we could be seeing just about anything. It has been long enough since Forgotten Land that a new Kirby wouldn't surprise me, but Kirby as a launch title isn't exactly something there's much precedent for. --- This is my signature. System launches are rarely anything surprising for Nintendo, at least recently. The Wii had Twilight Princess which was just a Gamecube port (they delayed the Gamecube release by a month exclusively to build up demand for the Wii, which was a sketchy move). The Wii U had literally nothing worthwhile at launch. The Switch had BotW which was just a Wii U port. My guess will be they'll confirm Metroid Prime 4 is a Switch 2 launch title, along with Mario Kart 9 and maybe a deluxe version of SSBU. I can't imagine anything in this will be a big surprise aside from the launch day, which might be sooner than we expect (like June or something). --- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiCtAUrZbUk -- Defeating the Running Man of Ocarina of Time in a race since 01/17/2009. -- ... The original Switch was first revealed in October and released the following March, and that was a ludicrously fast turnaround because the WiiU was performing so poorly that they needed to get something out the door quickly. I'd expect August at the earliest, and more likely October/November. faramir77 posted... The Wii U had literally nothing worthwhile at launch. Surprises:
Did I miss anything notable? I guess this is the first official confirmation of the mouse thing we've had, but that was pretty common knowledge already. Doing a bit of digging, they've got more details on backwards compatibility available on the Nintendo site, and it looks like there are some instances of software compatibility issues that are currently being investigated. Past that, most of the issues are just that the Switch 2 won't fit into some Labo builds and you'll need to use Switch Joycons (which have been quietly confirmed to be compatible with Switch 2 by this list) to access some Joycon-specific features for a few games like Ring Fit Adventure and 1-2-Switch, which I think is what most people expected. --- This is my signature. Not surprising, given that that's just what the exchange rate translates 450 USD into and that's just what consoles cost these days, but yeah, that's gonna hurt. I miss paying $200 for the N64 and GC. Granted, I'm also making a lot more now than I was when I was 12, but still. --- This is my signature. adjl posted... Not surprising, given that that's just what the exchange rate translates 450 USD into and that's just what consoles cost these days Yeah, but there's an argument that no Nintendo console should ever cost "what consoles cost". At least not in the modern era, and not when it's half a handheld rather than a full console anyway. The Switch cost $300 at a time when the PS4 was selling for $400 and up. The Wii sold for $250 versus $500 for the PS3. The GameCube was $200 compared to the PS2's $300. Nintendo's niche has been underselling it's competitors for a while now. Jumping up to $450 feels a bit too excessive, even if you factor in inflation and other complications. Though with the economy being what it is, and with the overall growth of PC and mobile gaming over the last couple decades (along with Microsoft talking about getting out of the market entirely), there's a distinct argument that no console should cost "what consoles cost", because it's becoming unsustainable. The pushback on the PS5 Pro was inevitable because of just how far Sony tried to overreach, but even lower price tags are starting to look too expensive for a lot of people. --- "Wall of Text'D!" --- oldskoolplayr76 "POwned again." --- blight family ... Funny you mention animal crossing, a game in which a person's save data is very important to them. If your console dies or gets stolen then that's all gone unless you pay for cloud saves (which not all games even support) and even then it's pretty much worthless because a) if you ever stop paying for it then they delete your data forever and b) they've literally had data breaches that wiped out people's entire islands. I mean fuck, the switch had an update that fired people's save data. It's the shittiest way they could have possibly designed a console. --- I call Cthulhu "daddy" ... Copied to Clipboard!

Flappers posted... a) if you ever stop paying for it then they delete your data forever If memory serves, the data sticks around for about a year after your subscription ends, you just can't access it without resubbing. Resubbing will also just create new data, so it doesn't really matter if what they had from a previous subscription goes away. Flappers posted... b) they've literally had data breaches that wiped out people's entire islands. Is that not only an issue if somebody happens to lose their local save data in some way before they reupload it? I know AC is a case where you have to jump through a couple hoops to create a backup, so that's a greater risk than for other games, but that still seems like a pretty narrow window for actual loss to happen. ParanoidObsessive posted... Jumping up to $450 feels a bit too excessive, even if you factor in inflation and other complications. Let's be real: any pricing decision made in the context of the current state of the global economy is going to feel a bit too excessive. The current state of the global economy is awful. I can't know for certain that the Switch 2 would have been cheaper if it had launched at the same time last year, but I'm not remotely surprised that it's coming out at a higher price than I expected in the current climate (especially because I expected $400, so this isn't a major change). Of course, there being a valid explanation for it being expensive doesn't change the fact that it's an expensive luxury purchase and that's 100% going to impact sales because it's going to be harder for people to justify spending that much, but that's also just the nature of the economy being a mess. Luxuries are a hard sell at any price when people have a hard time predicting how much they're going to need in the immediate future (and therefore identifying how much of their income is disposable). It's unfortunate, but it is what it is. ParanoidObsessive posted... Nintendo's niche has been underselling it's competitors for a while now. It's still coming in a bit cheaper than the full versions of the others, with the expectation that the inevitable Lite version will likely be ~$100 cheaper and therefore in line with the cheap versions. The gap isn't nearly as pronounced as it has been historically, but it's not entirely gone. Notably, though, the other two consoles are over four years old at this point. Underselling a four-year-old console with a brand new one is pretty hard to do without making some major concessions in the hardware you use, and given that the primary issue the Switch 1 has now is that the hardware just isn't keeping up well enough to be an attractive target for multiplatform development, skimping that much on the hardware risks failing to correct that issue (particularly where that's basically what happened with the Switch 1 compared to the PS4/Xbone: releasing an underpowered system that was able to undercut 3.5-year-old systems). Remember also that the Switch 2 has to compete with the Switch 1 as much as anything else. If people want a cheap system that can play most of the less-demanding games currently on the market, they can just buy a Switch 1. Trying to occupy that same niche with the Switch 2 when the Switch 1 is still receiving active development (a situation modern Nintendo's pretty unfamiliar with in the console market, given that the N64, GC, Wii, and WiiU were all already dead or moribund by the time their successors came out) is a risky proposition, so I understand aiming a bit higher. --- This is my signature.
