It's not meant to be an exhaustive list, it just has examples. You're meant to look at the definitions. A hamburger fits both purist definitions.

Technically yes, but I never have or ever will refer to it as such

In the UK a "sandwich" typically refers to something made with sliced bread, while a "burger" is its own distinct category.

Technically, I guess. I've never heard of it referred to as a hamburger sandwich, but a bun with meat and toppings inside would qualify.

Yeah, I wouldn't casually refer to a burger as a sandwich, but there's really no way to argue that it fits the definition, both in terms of structure and contents.

Huh, sandwiches with buns aren't common there? Sandwiches are frequently made with buns in North America. What would you call, say, ham and cheese inside a bun then? Sub buns aren't sliced bread either - are those not sandwiches in the UK?

if i invite you over for lunch and say "i'm making sandwiches" and then you get here and i serve out a bunch of hamburgers, that is not going to be what you expected. if i said "i had a sandwich for lunch" you are going to be even more surprised if it turns out i had a cheeseburger. in both cases you're probably imaging, like, slices of ham or turkey or something, often in between two slices of a loaf of bread, maybe other types of buns but not a hamburger bun.

If you were to say, "I'm making sandwiches," I'd ask you what kind because the term is too broad.

They still call them chicken sandwiches even though the only difference is a chicken patty instead of a beef patty.

The fact that there is a whole class of sandwiches that are called burgers, and we all know what is in and out of that class, proves that there is a strong and useful distinction.

I think it's obvious that burgers are a subset of sandwich, but there are lots of people who reject the traditional top-down set-based taxonomy of food. Natural language and culture certainly is not that simple. And so they would argue burgers are their own thing because they are so culturally distinct that calling them a sandwich is not useful, and harmful to communication, thus wrong. These people also say hot dogs and tacos are not sandwiches. And they might be right.

It's the same question as, is the color orange a red? Technically the answer is yes, and historically it was always a red. But nowadays it's so distinct that you would be an idiot for insisting that it's a red. Burgers might end up the same way soon.

As long as you know the difference between chicken burger and chicken sandwich, you are on the side of the burgers-are-not-sandwiches purists here.

There are many different names for that. I'd call it a ham and cheese roll. Bap would be another fairly common term. The word bun is typically reserved for sweet treats, like an iced bun.

I'd call a sub bun just a sub.

touch but also i think math is an area where it makes a lot more sense to have technical definitions that everyone can be on the same page with, sandwich it's a lot less important to be "technically correct" as almost all scenarios where you say sandwich, what matters more is what people practically understand it to mean.

also, i'd argue the reason sandwich is defined the way it is in the dictionary (i.e. two pieces of bread with something between them) is because there's no real way to exclude hamburger from this without making an awkward and unwieldly definition

like the point of the dictionary is to define words how they are used, but i think even if somehow everyone in the world all agreed they'd never call a hamburger a sandwich, no dictionary writer would find an elegant way to write "bread with something between it but NOT if that thing is a beef patty" so they probably still wouldn't define it that way

It's easy. The dictionary would declare up front that the definitions of the words apply to each thing that fits the description, except if there's a specially distinct word for that thing. Those distinct words would be marked by a star or something.

So "burger" would have a star, and so would "taco", but maybe "apple" would not have a star, because if you say you will bring fruit and you bring a bunch of apples, people would be ok with that.
