I haven't played (and beaten) a Pokemon since Black2/White2 and that was like 10 years ago. There was one I played after it, can't remember which it was tho, maybe X/Y? I dunno. Basically it's been a while since I rode the Pokemon bike so here we are.

Haven't decided who will be my starter yet. Probably grass-kitty.

Wow the frame rate just dropped like hell. This must be the performance issues I heard about lol

Yeah, performance is crap but its the most Ive enjoyed one of the mainline titles in a long time. (Arceus edges it out for Pokmon in general)

I found in my initial playthrough that playing it in handheld helps the framerate a bit compared to docked, so if you're not already playing it handheld, try that.

Am I fighting too much? Haven't even reached the school yet and my Sprigatito is almost lv 10 >_>

You'll notice it most often near water and a couple foresty areas.

Nah, you'll be fine. Just keep in mind that this game is kind of tuned around the player constantly rotating teams, so if you stick to a hard six instead of shuffling them around you WILL be overleveled.

Good news, then, because you can freely relearn any move your Pokemon has learned at any time now, no Heart Scales required. IIRC this includes egg moves and TM moves that you've replaced.

So you can adjust your movesets on the fly as needed. I think the only drawback is that when you replace a move, it's set to a very low PP.

I also exclusively did this, so it didnt bother me much at all

and for the fighting/xp thing, it really annoyed me you cant turn off xp share anymore. I kept my starter and a favorite in at all times so I could always whoop something if I had to and rotated the rest

Yeah, you're really going to enjoy how accessible Scarlet/Violet are compared to previous games. There are a LOT of quality-of-life improvements here.

Finally at the school.

The whole game doesn't take place here, does it? I like exploring the world in these games.

Finally the world opens up. Is there a recommended order to beat the gym leaders? Seems like I can go in any order.

3 actually ended up being my first destination as well and I didn't have too much trouble with it. Then I went directly to 7 lol. It made things fun.

Going slightly out of that shown order won't make too much of a difference. You will feel it if you beeline straight for one of the double-digit locations right at the start of the game, though.

I wish that they had set it up so each gym has a different team/level range depending on how many badges you have. They set this one up as open world, take advantage of that.

Yeah, this exactly. Beat a gym, titan, or base, and the levels in the other gyms, titans, and bases all go up. Actually let players explore what they want to while still providing progressive levels. As is, you'll only get consistently escalating levels by zigzagging back and forth across the map arbitrarily.

There are so many ways where S/V are a massive improvement over past games (like the open world, the story, the quality-of-life features, and Terastalization being the best battle gimmick since mega evolution) but then there are also so many ways where S/V are a massive missed opportunity (like the horrible performance/optimization, not having dynamic level scaling, removing certain core features from past games like Set battle style). In the end, I'd call it a mid-tier Pokemon game because the good and the bad pretty much balance themselves out.

Gonna tackle the first gym leader (number 1 on the map above).

Sprig and Lechonk will probably stay on the team the whole game, but the others are rotatable. Just working with the 'mons I caught on my way to Cortando. If there's any meta picks in the area, I'd like to know. >_>

Are you doing the raid dens? You can get a lot of Pokemon earlier than they appear in the overworld through those. I was able to add a Toedscool to my team before the first gym via a den, and they usually don't appear until towards the middle/end of the game IIRC

Haven't done a raid den yet. So I should be doing those like right now? Figured it could be a later thing.

Well, it's clear I'm not ready for Katy's Terastalized Teddiursa since it keeps OHKO's my mons and only the Fletchling has a super effective move against it and it doesn't even take away that much HP.

I could use some direction lol. Where should I go next?

The Raids kind of scale up as you go (like at first you'll only see 1-2 Star Raids and then later 3-5 Star only)

You also get items for doing them even if you don't want to catch the Pokemon, like EXP Candy...

Got my first gym badge.

Sprigatito evolved and is no longer a cute weed kitty but a bipedal furry. Okay.

Did my first Tera raid and got me a Swablu.
