I kind of can't stand them at all these days.

I miss the old days when they were the mindless genre instead of the read this textbook about creating a character and don't eff it up or you'll end up with an unviable build and not realize it until 30 hours into the game where the internet's only response is "why didn't you read the textbook" genre.

Sonic Chronicles. At first I kept getting lost in the weird maps and falling asleep during combat (which is a problem because executing attacks and skills requires timed touchscreen prompts). Years after starting, I went back and finished it and it was incredibly meh.

Beyond the Beyond. Someone here recently mentioned it. I never tried these but I bet a lot of those newer Kemco rpgs sucked. Oh yeah Tecmo Secret of the Stars! I didn't like that game and I liked a lot of stuff back then.

There is probably something more modern I tried that I did not like, but can't come up with it at the moment.

They actually don't suck. They just feel like generic JRPGs you would have played back in the day on the SNES.

Like Sonic and The Dark Brotherhood, I can't even remember it at all despite finishing it.

Or like the Tales of Symphonia sequel. "Courage is the magic that turns dreams into reality." Need I say more?

I feel like there was a Dragon Ball GBA game I bought and beat in less than a day and returned it to EBGames. They didn't want to take it back but somehow I successfully argued that it couldn't possibly have been worth my money.

Anyway, that aside, of more well known titles. I'd say Hyper Dimension Neptunia. I was super excited for a turn based RPG and it was fanservice with clunky ass gameplay. The fact that it kept getting games in spite of it being garbage seems surprising. But dudes are always thirsty, so it tracks.

Yea maybe I just meant they were a sort of blandness that has no built in nostalgia already. I know Lufia 1 isn't great, but I enjoyed the hell out if it. I doubt I'd be able to put up with those mazes now. I really did like Soul Hackers 2, but now I am mentioning flawed games I liked so I'll stop.

Cross Edge. It was an old cross over RPG from the Xbox 360 era.

To which the game had absolutely no redeeming qualities beyond that premise. The OG characters were dogshit, the story was dogshit, music was dogshit, the graphics were dogshit and not Becuase it was in 2D.

But the gameplay, mechanics and balancing were the worst Ive literally ever experienced in a RPGs. Itd take ages to explain why.

The other was sonic chronicles, which was almost 1-1 with the above minus the writing at the least which I thought was entertaining and carried the game. Along with the plot twist later.

Yeah although I definitely feel like the majority of Kemco games (really exe create games, kemco is just the publisher) are much better than Lufia 1.

From a pure gameplay POV they're about the same as Breath of Fire 2. Story wise they're all pretty bland and uninspired.

I played it for a bit. Though it was kinda fun. Went on the board to look up some info on crafting. I saw there were alternate endings. Looked up the requirements for the true ending and immediately ejected the disc and threw it away.

You would have to pay me to do that shit.

I might catch heat for this, and I don't think they're the worst RPGs I've played, but the Star Ocean kind of sucks. Second Story was the best one I played, but it honestly had a lot of jank with a thin plat and I don't think it really stands out as a great game from its era.

I tried Till the End of Time and The Last Hope and both of those felt like they were massively behind the curve compared to other games coming out at the time.

I think it's clever plus reminds me how in SMT certain skills used to cost HP. It really made ya think if it was safe to go all out with a strong attack knowing it would cost your hp.

TBH as long as you fought your battles along your way and paid attention casting spells using your hp was not that bad unless the player just intentionally spammed spells unnecessarily and never healed in Paladin's Quest. The merc system was really neat too.

In Star Ocean Till the End of Time, you'd die if your MP reached 0. And the game made you aware of that fairly early on by having early game enemies that dealt MP damage lol

Gah I am still posting. The thing about that is that enemies can do MP damage (so can the player of course). So there are strategies to mp kill some bosses but someone like Cliff maybe didn't have a lot of Mp so getting hit by a few strong mp attacks was death.

Mp death I wasn't a fan, but action combat is different than turn based.

I must be weird. I kinda liked it, to a certain extent. Makes sense if you mentally exhaust yourself to that point. Plus it works against enemies as well. It's just so terribly unbalanced for the player characters in it's execution imo.

I honestly wonder if giving the player a certain amount of time to heal it once it hits zero would've made it more tolerable...

Secret of the Stars

I did like the party swap mechanic between the 5 "main" cast and the supporting cast with the ability to swap people in and out, but everything else about it was so bland. The combat balance was wonky, the storyline was generic, and the music and graphics were nothing special.

Don't bother/10.

How does reviving a character from MP death work in SO3? Obviously an HP-only revive spell or item would be useless.

Well for my post the RPGs I got growing up were top tier. Pokemon Emerald, Diamond, Mystery Dunegon, Mario & Luigi 2, off the top of my head. So during the part of my childhood where I'd be stuck with a bad game to play if I got one I just lucked into not getting any bad RPGs. FF6 is just old and relatively simple, I felt like I cleared it just picking the strongest attacks over & over & over.

More likely what it means is they just particularly hated that one otherwise well-regarded game.

Like, honestly aside from my ultra obtuse "durr all the modern ones" answer above, my pick would be Star Ocean 2, a game literally everyone loves. Why? Well, I had issues with the menu system, I hated how many skills were just outright useless (or even actively a bad thing, like Flip) and the final boss kicked my ass hard af until I grinded more than 60 levels and finally gave up and learned how to craft shit so I could make that one cheat armor where you take no damage from enemies and just drain health constantly instead. It was just an overall miserable experience.

But I've played and enjoyed my share of poorly regarded ones too, like FF8 (I'm convinced the hate is just a "me too" train in the wake of the Spoony review which was admittedly so damn funny I must have watched it all the way through ten times) and... well, like FF8 anyway.
