Yes. There's not much competition this year tbh

It's possible. There's a few others I'd consider though, like FFVII Rebirth, Shadow of the Erdtree (it's big enough to qualify despite being an expansion, IMO), or maybe even Tekken 8 or Balatro. (Do fighting games ever get qualified for GOTY? I know indie games do if they're a big enough hit and Balatro is HUGE.)

I don't care about the actual awards or whatever, but this is definitely my personal GOTY. EoW would be the only other serious contender, and I do love that game too (just finished my Hero run), but SH2R just hits all the right buttons for me.

What the ACTUAL fuck can I do for the two pyramid Head fight. Fucking outrageous being stun locked into a corner and my controls seemingly refusing to work. Like not shooting my shotgun or even changing weapons.

I just remember running in a circle to train them, and then when the Spear one does his rush attack, I'd dodge and take that moment to shoot or hit one of them. I think they have a shared health pool by the way.

I'm in Brookhaven and have been through all areas of the map as far as I know, other than locked doors and other areas that are blocked. I'm stuck on the puzzle with the hand and the 3 bracelets. The safe in the same room is not solved yet. I am stumped - I don't really want spoilers, but just wondering if someone can confirm that the placement of the bracelets (order of all 3 and the rotation of them) very specifically matters, right? Is there something that hints at the solution to this in game? Before I put the bracelets on there was an aura around the hand showing bracelets needed to be placed there, and I did not pay attention to where the bands were positioned in that, so not sure if that matters.

Again, please, no spoilers, I just need confirmation that there are in game hints somewhere that is supposed to point me to the solution

I used a guide. The placement of the bracelets matters in order and rotation.

God speed. Feels like the otherworld hospital and on becomes a trial of stress and anguish. You get a small break before the descent into hell then it's time to suffer.

Fun fact i accidentally picked the right noose for the hanging puzzle. I didn't understand I was supposed to move the other pieces to finish the story and figure out who was innocent. I simply went to pick one to see what happened and thought I fucked up when I ended up jumping down and down lol.

I got stuck on that one for a minute too.

First, I didn't even realize you were supposed to do anything with the bracelets, it took a bit for me to remember they had numbers on them that must correspond with the books. My initial thought was that you were meant to be lining up the clean areas and tbf, there were spots that lined up perfectly. I had to look at it more closely to realize the actual solutions.

Alright, made it through the prison, the Abstract Daddy, and just met Maria in the Labyrinth.

The prison wasn't too bad actually. Jumped a few times, but it's not outright oppressing me like earlier portions of the game. Maybe I'm over the hump of being terrified in this game. Or maybe uh...recent events have put them in perspective <_<.

The Abstract Daddy is perhaps the first time I've seen the remake outright do better than the original. The entire setup is just so good. I guess some *coughUnfaircough* would argue that the symbolism is a lot more heavy-handed, but I think the feeling of helplessness running from it and finding nowhere to hide is a good trade-off.

It's also a nice touch that when you actually confront him, he's not that hard to beat. Almost like Daddy isn't that tough when he's not going against a scared little girl. I'm hoping he doesn't become a recurring enemy in the hotel like in the original, it'd undermine things a bit....also he would just be annoying.

On the other hand, the jailed Maria scene is a bit more of a mixed bag. I'd say the original Maria in this scene was a bit better, she had that uncanny feeling a lot more. This one isn't bad, but she doesn't quite manage that same feeling. On the other hand, James is way better thanks to the animations. To put it bluntly, I very much got the feeling that he was starting to get a confused boner when Maria caressed his face.

The Labyrinth wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I'm definitely over the hump in this game's spookiness.

Eddie also surprised me. I expected him to be a lot tougher than he was given some of the reactions ITT, but I oneshot him and didn't take too much damage. Quite liked the different phases, pretty good way of upping the difficulty without fucking it up too much.

Of all the things I expected them to cut, the boat ride was definitely one of them. Don't think even the most diehard purist would have complained either lol.

Just finished the music box in the hotel. Place hasn't blown me away so far, but it was also kind of a wind-down in the original. I could have done without the fireplace rigamarole, that was the only time in the game I've felt like they were padding. That boss fight was also pretty unnecessary.

The employee area had one little weird bit where you use a valve to get into the boiler room to get the key to the kitchen which is right next door, then you have to go back five feet and get the valve again to open another passage in the kitchen. In retrospect, I guess that was meant to be why the aquarium busted open, but I don't think anyone would have questioned it if you just walked in and found it broken.

I do want to compliment the puzzles. I don't think you get these kinds of puzzles much in modern video games. I quite liked the library one. It's pretty simple, but it made me feel smart for figuring it out lol. I overcomplicated the music box puzzle, thinking the little poem was meant to be adding and subtracting numbers, but it was just the last number in each one. Couldn't imagine them on hard mode.

Turns out I probably could have just waited like an hour to post that because I was already basically at the end of the game lol.

The burned-out hotel was...fine. I think I prefer the original where the geometry starts to break down and you go in one door and out the other end of the map. Without any enemies, this was basically just Layers of Fear again lol. I will say the few enemies near the end before Pyramid Head(s) were a *chef's kiss* touch. They're just sluggish and docile and it's a genius little move.

James continues to be an improvement. I don't think it's even the acting necessarily, just the improved animations and facial features. Allows him to be as generally deadpan as he was while adding a lot more emotion. I noticed that he actually grows stubble and gains dark spots under his eyes which is an excellent little touch.

Angela's scene was solid, but I think it missed a trick by having it just be a cutscene. There was something extremely impactful about being able to stand there and watch her slowly disappear up the steps.

The biggest miss in the game - and unfortunately it's a big one - is Maria. Like I said previously, she just doesn't nail it the way the original did. Her Maria is just a little too soft and that was alright in the beginning, but I needed to hear that shrillness and vindictiveness in her voice in some of these scenes. And while her Mary is mostly fine, her not breaking down in the ending letter is just unforgivable.

I was SHOCKED to get the In Water ending. I get the sense they made it a little easier to get, I don't think I walked around on low health that much and I think I examined Angela's knife like three times? I was fully prepared for the Leave ending which I honestly prefer, no matter how much In Water is "canon," but I did get to appreciate the improved James again.

I don't know if I did well in combat or if the game just kinda gives up on the survival horror after a while (the original sure did). I ended the game with at least thirty health items between the two. I did, however, burn through my shotgun and rifle ammo on the last couple bosses. I joked to myself when it gave handgun ammo right before the end that I'd be in trouble if I needed to use it, but I almost did. Think I beat it with one rifle shot left and no shotgun shells (I used them all on the preceding boss).

As for those bosses, Pyramid Head(s) was fine. Nothing to write home about. I was looking forward to Maria because that boss was one of the biggest weak points in the original, but I don't know if they actually improved it or just made it longer. I think I'd say it was an improvement if they skipped the dumbass ceiling section; I loathe bosses that just make you wait on them. As it is, I think it's a sidegrade.

All in all, a worthy remake but still worth playing the original if only for some of the better spots of acting.

Edit: I watched the other endings on Youtube. Got-damn, the two new endings are brutal. I think I actually prefer the Stillness ending to the rest. They did kinda ruin the dog ending unless the video I saw just didn't include the credits, but their take on the alien ending was pretty good.

Honestly felt the game was mediocre

10/10 atmosphere though

Liked the apartments
I got bored towards the end of the hospital
Prison was great
Liked the labrynth
But I just felt disengaged the whole time because combat was whatever and didn't care much about the story or characters

Puzzles were easy but it was standard
Can't see how they would have been much harder on hard

This LPer I'm watching is kind of hilarious because he's putting so much importance on the random documents that give you puzzle hints lol.

He's nearing the hospital and still wondering what's going on with the janitor that broke the record. He's also equating Scott, Mildred, and Henry from the clock puzzle with Pyramid Head, Maria, and James.

AboutOliver
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bc96i4PGYKM

Just be warned he can be a little slow. In his previous episode, he basically took a full hour to get from the end of the apartment to the motel. And he doesn't even get to the first enemy until the second one.

I'm very surprised to see him play this game because he's an enormous fucking scaredy cat. For instance, this is how he reacted to an Enderman in Minecraft.
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/5nRVuHN8Kzg

He's said multiple times in this playthrough that if he was going through what James is, he would just kill himself. The prison might actually kill him IRL.

Huh, Oliver obsessing over details did point out an interesting one. The game does what most games do and just has all of the clocks read the same time. He was thinking there might be something significant about that time, but he realized in this latest episode that the time on all of the clocks match the time on the clock puzzle.
