is it possible to dodge/run away from enemies or are you kinda forced to fight most of the time?

You can run from enemies, but now since there's no loading screens they can chase you through doors.

Yeah it's gotten pretty rough, I won't say much more but it's just pitch black and the radio is hurting more than it's helping honestly. This area was the scariest also in the original and Bloober definitely got the message.

You can dodge them, but so far it's usually worth it to kill them just so you don't have to keep dealing with them.

But I had that same opinion for the original game, so your mileage may vary.

Pleasantly surprised by the voice acting and mocap so far, I think they understood the assignment

I am playing so badly. I made it to Wood Side apartments, near death. Bumblefucked my way through the apartments, near death the entire time. I use a health drink the second I find it, then the very next encounter I get hit and need another health drink. I think my problem I'm having is that I'm trying to rush every encounter instead of properly timing my dodges. There was a room with three guys in it I managed to walk away from unscathed because of dodge spamming. Some of those encounters are just bullshit though, like you walk into a room and all is quiet, turn a corner and all of a sudden you're swallowing an uppercut.

Having a blast so far though. Game is gorgeous.

I was not expecting the mannequins to be stealth brawlers but they are fucking ruthless.

They nailed it. The look, feel, atmosphere, gameplay, characters. This is how Silent Hill 2 should play and look. This is it.

My copy is showing up today so I am very excited. I might wait a few days to play it with my friend however.

Good so far. First time playing a SH game, just made it to the Wood Side Apartments.

Just came home from getting a copy (along with a couple N64 games I didn't have before) so I'll be giving it a try as soon as it installs.

First trophy I got. I was immediately like "how far will the game let me go this way?" Was not expecting a trophy lol.

I'm at the apartments now. I picked up early access because I finished Echoes of Wisdom earlier than I expected and spent the last two days wandering the streets and practicing combat while I worked up to the apartments. Loving the atmosphere, the voice acting, and the fact that James has solid controls but he looks clumsy as hell while swinging and dodging. Nice touch. Looking forward to finishing the apartments after work.

Holy shot, I've been exploring around and I definitely did not expect Hard combat to actually be...hard. The monsters don't stay dead and it's making me nervous coming across one in an enclosed space.

5 minutes in and I'm already scared.

I was wondering that myself.

But if the original's jankiness can be part of the immersive experience, I guess we can just chalk this up to the ethereal dreamlike quality of James' journey through Silent Hill.

Well, I might be a casual, lol. I had to bring the combat to normal difficulty. After coming across the mannequin it ended up being too much for me, going down after like three hits with its somewhat erratic attack animations. Not a complaint though, I like how enemies are hard to deal with despite the expanded combat. Just a bit much for me on a first playthrough, lol.

The mannequins are brutal.

Yeah they are no pushover. I'm getting better at fighting them. In the record store there were two of them... I recommend hit and run tactics based around after they vomit. Your dodge is powerful but you don't want to be early.

My impression is that he stomps on an enemy if it'll be the last hit. I don't remember stomping on any enemy more than once.

But dead enemies can get back up later.

You seem to do a stomp if you're right on top of the enemy, and you use your weapon to hit them if you're a bit off to the side. I just hit them until I hear crunching noises or blood starts to form underneath them.

how does it run on the deck?

Tip for leg head enemies: pistol shot to a lower knee stumbles them at which point a melee will be lethal. This works on hard

Somehow I completely forgot Silent Hill 2 has the double fucked up evil version of the map, I only remembered that being in 1 for some reason. This games gonna be kinda long

Anyone playing this with a 3070 (or similar)? I'm debating between playing it now and waiting for a couple of months when I upgrade to the new gen. I'd be playing in 1440P, or 4K If I can get solid performance with DLSS.

I'm playing on a 3070. I'm on 1440p with DLSS (I think Balanced). Mostly runs smooth 60 on medium settings (I can't tell difference from medium vs high textures). There are some moments where it gets choppy for a bit seemingly either from the game loading zones when you're outside or just something weird happens under the hood.

that happens on any platform or cpu so it's a game(ue5 traversal) issue right now.

Damn, I had to stop myself before I play it overnight. Got a good bit into the hospital. I read that the game gets terrifying in the later half, I'm both looking forward to that and not, lol.

I played for about 45 minutes for the first time tonight. Ive honestly just loved running around aimlessly exploring this new version of the townespecially on that first run on. They really nailed the atmosphere.

Man, if this game is less scary than the original, I don't know how the fuck I managed to play through the original as a kid because this shit is stressing me out <_<

I only just made it to the Blue Creek Apartments and I see me taking forever to beat this game just to keep my heartrate low

I left off yesterday just past Blue Creek apartments with Maria in tow. Not to be a parrot, but they really did nail the atmosphere. Sometimes I have to stop playing just to admire how the game looks. Oh and I've got the melee combat all figured out now. It's not nearly as hard as I was making it out to be, but also not as fast paced and "visceral" as some critics were making it out to be.

I wonder if disabling Control Flow Guard under Windows' Exploit Protection settings fixes that choppiness. I first found this when I played Indika. It completely got rid of all the stuttering I was getting in that game. Now I do it by default for all performance heavy DX12 games, just in case.

How is your dodge game? That's really the key. Once you get that figured out it's not such a big deal anymore.

I did not enjoy the third floor of the apartments where the hallways has like two dozen dead enemies that can pop up at any time. Fuck. Me.

If one of my dogs bark at an inopportune time, I'm almost certainly going to shit myself.

TC's tip for the mannequins is legit: two shots to the leg staggers them, then you can melee them.

My only complaint so far is that the camera can absolutely shit the bed in those cramped areas. Oh, and even on PS5, I'm getting sooooome slowdown. But I am on Graphics Mode.

never played the original so i jumped to play this as soon as I could, the previews impressed me.

so far, it's as unsettling and scary as i hoped and the gameplay is solid. just started the second half of the hospital level and i can't wait to play it after work.

I am using performance. It's stupid traversal stuttering that UE5 seems to be famous for.

Even Pat can't get it to stop with his rig.

Oh. I don't know why I assumed that was a PC problem specifically. I am still wondering if that fix I mentioned before can help with this issue on PC. I did it before I even tried playing the game and haven't encountered any serious stuttering.

I made it through the apartments and am not looking forward to the hospital.

I don't remember the original game super well, but the remake seems more linear than I remember the original being. Doesn't seem to be much wandering the map at any rate, things seem to be blocked off in a very straightforward manner. Maybe the hospital opens up a bit.

Or maybe I was just bad at the original game. I've been watching Symbalilly play the original and her trip through the apartments was fairly straightforward, but she might have edited out some of the faffing about.

Also, the photographs. When I first got them, I assumed they were for the grocery store, but that code comes from a different code. The I found one that had Room 308's door in the picture, but that door was locked and I couldn't find any other way into it. Though it did have someone knock back on the door when I tried it. So I guess they're some kinda collectible, but they have numbers (and symbols?) on the back. Maybe it's some kinda cypher.
