91. The Blue Sanctuary: Good beat!
92. Predestined Fate: Lovely retraux goodness. Not my absolute favorite from the game, but all the others are probably retired lol
93. A Thousand Leagues Below (Iron Whale): More retraux. This one's moodier than your standard fare. Really nice bass on this song.
94. Jaguar Ningen no Junan (Long Version): Feels like a different proggy Kudo rhythm song gets into VGMC every year. They're hit or miss for me, but this one's a hit! I like going on the ride.
95. Stage Music 1: Another unique retraux style! This one's sort of triumphant but sort of sad. The production is solid. This (along with Jaguar Ningen no Junan) did pretty well in my 300 VGM ranking topic; happy to see them do well here too!
96. Staff Roll: ...but this song, hoo boy. This song is special. Mario series credits themes just hit a certain way, you know? The little fake choir that comes in around 0:45, the sweeping melody, the tinny N64 guitar...this shouldn't be as good to me, and maybe it wouldn't be without the context, but it is what it is. This would have taken my Bracket C favorites bracket if it weren't for Sword of the Surviving Guardian, which is literally ranked one spot higher (#87 vs. #88); now that that song is out, I hope Staff Roll can go the distance.

you could pretty easily cut a few minutes out of this song and not lose much but I don't care as much as I usually would because otherwise this song is sick, the wubbing works oddly well here

I don't get this soundtrack. I've played the game (not all of it, should finish it sometime, but some of it) and nothing stuck with me from my playtime. And yet I keep seeing people hyping it up to hell and back and it's just. What am I missing? It's not even specifically the fact that it's chiptune, stuff like Tim Follin's works and the Shovel Knight soundtrack proves that chiptune can be Really Fucking Cool, the melodies are just kinda nothing special.

speaking of Shovel Knight... this isn't a great example. it's a decent song, but it's definitely no In the Halls of the Usurper, High Above the Land, or Of Devious Machinations. remember the SoT remix being better

honestly too proggy for me, and not even in an interesting way like Carpathians. has some pretty cool bits, but largely not my kind of guitar-heavy song

TBH, I wasnt very into Jaguar when I first heard it, it just felt like more of the same after Kiyarora and Jupiter Guns. Relistening now, Im picking up on the parts that do appeal to me. Like the edgy rumbling part from 0:27-0:39, thats cool, and it comes back later on. And 1:02-1:40, which has both the low hits and the high squeals. That part also comes back close to the end at 3:53, and this time the squeals go even higher and longer. So the beginning and end are both pretty good, its the middle that drags it down.

The best subtitle cant be anything other than All Phase Mix.

I've done some thinking recently - I'm not too sure if I'm as big a fan of the VVVVVV soundtrack as I thought I was? I really only have Pushing Onwards living rent-free in my memory because I know I love that one, but I either don't remember the rest off the top of my head or don't care too much for them.

Can't vote for Kaufman sadly, Kudo is barely better but still better here.

Match 3 is kinda close too! I'll admit it, nostalgia is bringing it for me in this matchup.
