Random fact: Even though I've nominated lots of returning vgm (mostly in VGMC 13/14), Danger (ARM) is the only one I nominated the first time around. Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke Evergreen should've had TBIYTC vs. RFTM imo Anyway, Danger ARM rules. Practically gets better every time I hear it. Legendary remix. TBIYTC never does anything for me. I listen to it again every once and a while and it's always the same blahness. I don't really get Faith. It's long and doesn't really go anywhere for me. Evergreen is reminiscent of Haruka Shimotsuki (who I love), but with a different singer. Easy match! RFTM, OTOH, is a perennial favorite. I'll rarely not vote for it, even against something like Wildfire, which is probably top 10 in this division. Wildfire Mortified by Faith I won't support it in the leadups until it decides to take an off-year, but I truly do enjoy TBIYTC. RTFM, on the other hand, as with most forms of Touhou, no thank you (it also doesn't hurt that Wildfire is somewhat of a banger.) The Best Is Yet To Come Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke Mortified by Faith Character development is going from hating Danger Arm Version to respecting it to kind of liking it to being really into it. The only part I don't like is the vocal portion but it's such a small part of the song. The Best is Yet to Come is a song I genuinely think should have retired back in like VGMC1 or whatever, but I fucking hate that it keeps getting nominated because it will never fucking retire if the voterbase gets overexposed to it. I feel like my child is being disrespected. And yet it gets my vote still. Fuck. If the vocal section of Danger didn't exist I would maybe swing the other way? I still support you, weird little freak of a song. I'm not super into RFtM anymore. Touhou is a bias but I do think the series' music is better as a base for something greater, which is good thing that the fanbase loves fan games. But on the flip side I've never been able to connect to Wildfire. I bet that if there's an instrumental song that uses this melody, I'd be pretty hot on it. Danger (ARM Version): Pretty interesting version of this song. The base version isn't particularly interesting, but they definitely added a lot of substance to it in this arrangement. Pretty cool song, even if the vocal part doesn't really fit with the rest.
The Best Is Yet To Come: I still really like this song even if it's been abused over the past 17 years. Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke: I still really don't like this song and wish it would just go away. Wildfire: Fun pop rock anthem. Not a ton else to say about it. Mortified by Faith: There are a couple of Off-Peak songs that I like more than this one, but this is a respectable pick. The soundscape and production are really well-done, and it's just a song that you can close your eyes and immerse yourself in to get the most out of it. Really cool pick. Evergreen: Some nice instrumentation in this one, and the vocalist is pleasant enough. Solid songwriting and melody. Good song, but it's up against stiff competition. Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke Evergreen the best is no longer yet to come. it is here. in the form of Danger (ARM version). seriously tho, danger (ARM ver) is one of my top 5 vgm, which is not something i say lightly. this track completely blew my mind last time it was in vgmc; it hits all of the right notes for me. it drags me into a whirlwind of feelings and doesnt let go. it has several different layers for my mind to focus on, so i never get bored. it's chaotic, and yet still manages to feel cohesive. i feel like i dont have a great grasp on what "bebrcore" is, but danger (ARM ver) is certainly it. oh uh there are other songs today i suppose, sure. i think last time i listened to mortified by faith i said "its a very good vibe but not one that im always feeling." unfortunately im not feeling it today. --- gau gau ... Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke Mortified by Faith Wildfire has a lot of parts that are individually awesome-sounding but are put together disjointedly. At 1:35 it suddenly goes really quiet into really loud, which feels weird to me coming after the process of buildup, payoff, cooldown from the start. Then its getting into a rhythm from 2:15-2:55 until again, quiet, LOUD. I like listening to it, it just throws me off some. I would vote for Wildfire if it were matched against The Best Is Yet To Come. TBIYTC (as its called) is a song that I think is fine, I dont dislike listening to it, but Im probably not going to vote for it over any song with something in it I actively like. However, Wildfire is not against TBIYTC, its against Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke. RFTM (as its called) is a song I love. Listening to it fills me with joy, and there arent many songs I would vote over it. Danger (ARM Version) Wildfire Mortified by Faith An unused Secret of Mana arrangement! I can kinda see why they didn't - it doesn't really feel appropriate for a looping boss theme after a certain point. Imagine being stuck in a boss fight for over three minutes and suddenly getting jumpscared by a weird vocal break. I don't really love the introduction of vocals into this arrangement but everything else is pretty much perfect. The production's on point and the arrangement's exciting. This one's a winner! 9/10 The Best is Yet to Come, indeed 7/10 Oh wait, no it's not. Hello again, RTFM 2/10 Is this crappy Imagine Dragons knockoff better than RTFM? I guess. Barely. 3/10 Mortified by Faith is pleasantly strange and novel, which is a plus, but I didn't end up grooving to it as much as I would have liked. I think I found those high 'hoooo' vocals to be a bit grating after a while and I never really found any part of this track growing on me in particular. But I appreciate the weird soundscape. 6.5/10 I braced myself around :53 in Evergreen because these types of songs live or die by how unbearably cheesy the chorus is. Wildfire Evergreen Danger is genuinely unpleasant to listen to. This is just assaulting the ears intentionally, so vote goes to Snake by default. BiYtC is a pretty good song, though the franchise has better options. Wildfire is a good song with a ton of narrative weight if you've played the game. It also builds on several other instrumental tracks that aren't included in this, which is sort of a shame since it's the culmination of a lot of other music. Not something you'd know just from listening to it though. Nothing against Touhou song, just no contest for me personally. Evergreen is more fun/lively and something I'd let loop while I did other things, but Mortified is pretty nice and this one was very close! Wildfire Evergreen Might change my mind on match 1 later. Both retirement-worthy. I generally think a lot of the "context required" claims are exaggerated, but Wildfire isn't one of them. It's still good regardless, but much better and more impactful in the game itself imo. Danger (ARM Version) Wildfire Mortified by Faith There's really just one part I'm don't care much about from Danger (ARM), and that's from ~:0:54 to 1:09, right before the song just drops into overdrive and I bop my head cause of it. The vocals suddenly coming in does make for a weird moment, but it's not one I dislike! I kinda wish they were a little more present, but I'll honestly take how the song is now than potentially make it worse/awkward. I just don't know what it is, but I just don't feel spurned or emotional in any way every time I relisten to The Best Is Yet To Come. I dig the Celtic sound for sure, but those vocals have never worked for me; they're simply there. This might be one of the very few cases I've experienced so far where the vocals do drag the song down for me, I'm almost curious enough to see how it'd feel instead if it were just the Celtic instruments and nothing else. How did ZUNpets ever become a thing, anyway? I wonder how much more I would enjoy Touhou music if they were replaced with any other synth, since that's really my main complaint with Reach for the Moon. I really like the piano and xylophone synths in this one too, so I'm a little bummed I can't enjoy it more. Wildfire is really good, I'd definitely sooner expect it to be a popular radio rock hit than from a gacha game. I guess it does have pretty big Imagine Dragons vibes to it. Man, I didn't know Mortified by Faith would be this much of a cool song! Its bizarre atmosphere, littered with bits of saxophone, crystalline and dreamy synths, and trippy vocals, just enraptures me while it plays. This is a song I can just play and immediately close my eyes and vibe to easily, I'm definitely developing a soft spot for this one. Oh hey, Evergreen's the secret Atelier track for this year, it looks like. I really like the happy Celtic vibes in this one, complete with accordion, and the vocals are pretty and fit this well.
