2016 and him gaining almost 10m new voters in 2020 doesn't really agree with your statement. There are definitely moderates and Independents who aren't MAGA cultists that are open to being swayed into voting him.

Inds and moderates tend to be the election deciders.

In the mind of anyone likely to vote Trump under any circumstances, he already has earnt it.

Everyone else likely isn't gonna vote Trump no matter what and he couldn't earn their vote.

No, this is right-wing propaganda they've repeated over time to depress voter enthusiasm and turnout because that benefits them.

In 2016 Clinton lost TX to Trump by less than 3m. There was about 8-10m eligible voters that year who could have voted and didn't either due to gerrymandering or because attitudes like yours has led to people giving up over time and had the 3rd lowest voter participation that year. If she had just gotten 3m more votes in TX she would have one of "the reddest states in the nation". I believe Biden had an even smaller margin of loss in 2020 than Clinton had in 2016.

Also Arizona and Georgia were considered red states that Dems would never win, and yet they won them in 2020 due mostly to new voter turnout.

For a lot of states "my vote doesn't matter" because millions of people believe that. That's why Republicans go so hard on voter suppression and removing people from voter rolls. The majority of the U.S. doesn't vote, if millions more would the makeup would dramatically change.

Saying 'Trump has to earn my vote' is like saying 'that greasy heart-stopping double-bacon cheeseburger has a to earn my tastes buds,' or 'cocaine has to earn my addiction.'

Because republicans understand that they have to vote to get the shit they want. If they acted like left wing voters, they never would have gotten Roe overturned. If they were left wingers, the first president after Roe who didn't overturn it they would have said fuck it voting isn't worth it because I didn't get 100% of what I wanted.

You and I both know Trump tries to take both sides of a position and it does not matter to them one fucking bit.

Especially on the abortion issue he fluctuates from being proud of ending Roe v Wade to trying to distance himself from being the one who ended it, going from it should be up to the states, to supporting an abortion ban, to going back to it being the states. He tries to boast about how he created the vaccine while also saying RFK Jr. is the "fake" anti-vaxx candidate in an attempt to court the anti-vaxxers.

It doesn't take much to retain loyalty from people who hold you to absolutely no standards whatsoever and that is largely the Republican party as of today.

We are seeing some consistent dissent, though. Haley's been out of the race for months, endorsed Trump, and yet there's still primaries where her zombie candidacy is getting 17-20% of the vote, a far larger and stronger protest vote against Trump than those 2 uncommitted votes which is also completely organic unlike the uncommitted votes which were organized and coordinated. There's a portion of Republicans who go out of their way to express their discontent with Trump and those are the people Biden tries to court when he says you don't have to agree with our views, but at least stand with us this time to preserve democracy.

There is a lot of variables going on in this election.
