At best Redbox will see a boom. More realistically, though many of the unprofitable streaming services will die off within the next decade and fold into the rest.

I doubt it. They're annoying to go to, and more costly if you're renting a bunch of stuff. Can't beat picking what to watch from the couch unless it becomes stupidly expensive.

For video rental shops to make a comeback they'd have to have just about everything available to rent there. That's the only real weakness streaming has that a video store could capitalize on.

I doubt it. People will get fed up with streaming services enough that a lot of them will either die off or be forced to merge with another service. But that won't bring back video rentals.

I use Vudu. They have weekly deals and I mainly buy from that or I use codes from physical purchases. Sometimes people that don't use Vudu will give me their codes. I double dip and buy my favorites physically even if they don't come with a code.

Music isn't solely released on vinyl though and 3d has been around for like 70 years.

But we didn't go back to vhs after hddvd failed.

And it's best to just get used to physical media not being a thing. Capitalism leads to this, as saving $1 per disc is $1 more for corporate profits.

Yeah it sucks pretty hard when movies you may want to watch are behind another paywall/service. Or when one subscription service has part 1 of a trilogy and another has parts 2 and 3, or you have to pay extra to rent 2 and 3.

I got rid of all that shit except Prime because I get that half off. If I had to pay full price it would go too.

WB has shown us this year alone why getting used to no physical media is a terrible idea. We are entering a new dark age for media preservation due to the shortsightedness of idiots like Mix.

No. Physical media will remain, but you really can't beat the value and convenience of streaming and I say that as someone with a shelf full of Blu Rays. A single Blu Ray is a month's subscription at least. If you watch literally more than one thing, you're probably better off with streaming from a value standpoint.

Waiting to see streaming services enact a contract period like cable. That would be the end for me, personally.

There's simply too much fucking TV, I can't imagine 90 percent of shows have enough viewers to be profitable. There's gotta be some sort of collapse happening soon, right?

And history has shown that people will simply have to deal with it.

But also, with technology comes other means. Roms and emulators exist because Nintendo and other companies either lose IP or won't rerelease it. Same for pirating of TV and Movies and Music.

There's always going to be other means to acquire things.

No. Renting movies online works just fine. Depending on the movie, $3-$6 for 2-3 days. That's pretty close to what rentals at blockbuster cost 20 years ago. Way more convenient and a larger selection than any physical location could ever hold.

I can't believe how hypocritical you're being about this Clay. You can't claim to be anti-capitalist and turn around and simp for megacorps making a power grab. Putting every egg in the online basket for movies and video games is fucking stupid. Music made out okay by having multiple mediums to get music from as well as corporations not forcing consumers to subscribe to their distribution service. Film and video games don't have that and that is not going to change any time soon.

Simping? I'm letting you know how things are going to be. I'm not going to live in some fantasy land where corporations grow a heart.

The simple fact of the matter is things only move forward, not backwards. Holding out hope that streaming dying returns physical media is astonishingly stupid. If streaming dies, another thing will simply pop up.

CD's died the moment itunes was created. It just took a while, but the moment Jobs mused about it, physical media was on the outs.

And I'm not going to live in a dystopia where Hollywood's fractured market is empowered by wastes of oxygen like Zaslav. Or where videogames are entirely the property of that Hutt Gabe Newell.

The internet was a mistake and entertainment would be far better if it remained owned by the government.

I know people like to think everything was better back in the day, but the availability and convenience of media objectively wasn't. Right now almost every movie, every song and every game you can think of is available without even getting off your couch, and in most cases for a lot less money than you'd have spent decades ago. Spotify is $11 a month... that wouldn't have bought me 1 CD when I was a kid.

Streaming is superior to CD ownership because the market place hasn't been carved up by major music distributors who force you to subscribe to the company streaming service to get access to your favorite artists who are spread out amongst multiple companies because artists change their employers.

Film is the antithesis of that. Not to mention streaming has made Sturgenon's Law take off with regards movies. The amount of garbitch on streaming networks that wouldn't have even justified a straight to video release back in the video store days.
