In college, I used to get two double cheeseburgers and large fries for $3.99 including tax.

Now one McDouble (the downgraded double cheeseburger) and a large fry are almost $7.

Oh well, it's probably better that I'm eating less fast food anyway.

The inflation is less than 3%.
While it is a part of the raise, it is just a small part of the raise.

Fast food restaurants have completely lost the plot. It's cheaper to have an actual meal in an actual restaurant nowadays, sometimes by significant amounts.

No, doubling in ten years is not 3%. It's more like 7%, by the rule of 72.

This is also more than double, so it would actually be higher than that.

The market dictates the price.

Once people stop buying, either the price will go down, or the company goes out of business.

Yes, I know they're inflating their prices with their greed, but that's an ongoing thing. This isn't new.

Not defending it, but I am curious how the chart would look if the 2024 prices uses the app prices. you're selling them your data to subsidize the cost, and I wonder how much of a difference it makes.

The post above confirms it, but when I was a senior in HS (1995-96) there were 3 meals that were $3.25 with tax.

I only remembered it becasue each of the 4 fast food places that were in driving distance from my school all had at least one meal that was $3.25 after tax.

McD's - The 3 mentioned above
Taco Bell - 4 Soft tacos w/cinnamon twists and a soda
BK - Whopper Meal
KFC - 3 chicken strips and potato wedges

This isn't about the price of healthcare, or even clothes or groceries.

As silly as it sounds, fast food is a luxury.

It's like complaining about how expensive it is to go to football game. If it's too expensive, stay home.

Sometimes I see how many people complain but still buy and I say ha, my one econ 101 class tells me you're just being dramatic, because if you actually had a problem with it you wouldn't buy.

Then I see those prices outpace inflation by an outrageous extent with no apparent change whatsoever to quantity demanded and I start wondering how McDonald's managed to produce a perfectly vertical demand curve.

Then I think about how this also happens with video games, and I start wondering if I should just go demand a refund for that econ 101 class.

I lost a 2, my mistake.
$1 in 2014 is $1.32 today, thereby the inflation is 32%.

It was a Dollar Menu item for a long time, so they probably intentionally took a hit on it for a while and then at some point they took it off the Dollar Menu and it jumped to whatever inflated price it was set at the time.

This is the reality. When people had nothing to do other than sit at home and buy shit, and workers were sparse, prices shot up and never really corrected because... Well, why the fuck should they? People keep buying. Let's shoot that shit to the moon.

We basically got catapulted in to the worst part of capitalism by COVID, and no one really cares to stand up and do shit about it other than whine and continue buying.

There's also the app bullshit that every fast food place runs these days.

I've honestly always viewed eating out, fast food or sit down, as a luxury item/experience. This is especially true with things like doordash.

It hurts me whenever my wife wants to go out to eat somewhere, because I can't help but think about how it's never worth the cost, and I've felt that way for many years. So this pain people feel about food prices is something I guess I've always just felt and internalized.
