It's hard to argue against the fact that he committed the crime he was accused of, but I wouldn't personally think that was bad enough to get him thrown out of office.

I guess it depends on whether one small crime should be enough to overthrow the will of the American people based on a political grudge match. I'm glad removal from office takes a supermajority to succeed, otherwise that kind of thing would happen a lot more often.

In hindsight, he should have been removed. He essentially raped Monica Lewinsky and Al Gore would have been a better president.

They tried to frame it as having an affair when he was really the most powerful man in the country coercing the hot young intern fresh out of high school to give him oral.

But no at the time I didn't support it. I had a lot of different opinions back then.

His actual crime was perjury, which he was absolutely guilty of.

I definitely think setting a standard for presidents starting with him that such behavior was unacceptable in the modern age would have been a good thing. I'm not sure impeachment was the penalty he deserved, but he definitely should have been penalized.

People constantly refer to the crimes of Presidents like Nixon as if that should be a get out of jail free card for modern presidents. At some point you have to say "we got to be better, these are the new standards".

Back when it happened, I don't see the big deal and thought Republicans were just reaching for anything to get a Democratic President. He got some in the Oval Office, so what? As long as it didn't affect the country, I didn't see it their business.

However over the years, as I learned more about it and matured, I definitely see the issue and he should've been impeached. He did lie/perjure himself and it was completely unethical to sleep with an intern.

I find it impossible to take perjury seriously in the context of a Republican fishing expedition where questions were asked that never should have been asked, and that was my feeling back then as well.

The most I will concede is that "fuck off" would have been a better response by Bill Clinton to the fishing expedition than lying.

Well, the Republican pigfuckers that impeached Clinton had their own affairs (or worse), as everyone should have suspected even back then.

But Newt's excuse for his affair (I forget which one, there have been many) remains an all-time favorite -- "I love the US so much and work so hard as a public servant that I just has to cheat on my wife" (paraphrased).

This. The investigation was originally meant to be into shady real estate dealings. The GOP had such a hate boner for Clinton though that Starr's position allowed him to basically investigate whatever he wanted.

Which also why the GOP hamstrung Mueller and limited his powe and scope. If he had the power Starr had, Trump would absolutely have been hit with a dozen or so obstruction charges.

I was in my late teens when this happened, and I did not want him to be impeached. This was the 90s and the groundwork for MAGA was being laid, and everything from the GOP was a lie and/or completely partisan. To this day, I will not take the perjury seriously, as the whole thing was absolutely a partisan fishing expedition, no matter what you think of Clinton otherwise.

But.what I did not grasp as a teen was the problem with the huge power imbalance between an intern and the most powerful person in the world. At the time I just thought they were consenting adults and really didnt think about it much further. But now I have grown (I hope) and times are different (I hope) and I recognize that Clinton should have been removed for that conduct alone. What he did with an intern with him in that position is unacceptable.

I think Clinton was a great President. I was really involved with Dem. politics at that time and I met and talked with him a few times (he would not remember me of course), and he really is just the most personable individual you have ever seen. But he is a complete creep, looking back on things. The GOP was being completely awful and ridiculous too, which made it hard for me to see.

Again, dont care about the perjury in the face of a completely biased and unfair proceeding. Do care about the power imbalance between a WH intern and the President of the US. I wish I had been mature enough to figure that out at the time.
