I grew up, mostly just me and my single mom. I'm not sure we ever lived over the poverty level (or it was just at it)

Idk if it was Section 8 officially, but we lived in rent controlled apartments at one point.

During or after that, my mom started receiving food stamps and has been on them since (though it went down to basically nothing once I was no longer a minor).

I attended public school the entire time and received free/reduced meals the entire time.

Also, needed government assistance with bills. There were programs offered to help reduce power bills and the like. <_<

So yeah, I spent basically my entire childhood from age 7 onward on some kind of government assistance.

Even afterwards, I went to community college on FAFSA grants.

Having known I was receiving and had received so much assistance has informed my political views of the role of government. Additionally, it was one of the reasons I joined the military, so I could give back in my own way.

Public school and FAFSA.

Despite that, aid programs should be expanded to the point of universality.

no. We were poor but my parents still made too much to get any kind of assistance.

It really made me realize why a lot of people say theres no point in working a low paying job

There have been people who testified to Congress about families where the kid has to quit a fast food job because it brought the family income above the point where they could get Medicaid and they couldn't afford treatment otherwise.

The kid literally couldn't work to help support the family because it was (again) literally killing their mother.

No. It was just my dad and I. Very much working class and things got tight in the early to mid 80s when the economy was real shit and my dad was laid off from his good John Deere factory job but we always scraped by. I didnt have much but I was always fed and clothed. My dad busted his ass for peanuts. Like driving truck and having to manually unload entire semi loads of 50lb bags of feed at farms by hand. But he always kept up going until he got called back to John Deere in 1990. Then things turned around a lot for him.

But again, the 80s were a struggle but no, no assistance.

Found out we qualified but my old world dad refused to apply for it. The school actually called my sister in and said she could get free lunches but they were concerned that my parents didnt speak English and didnt understand the forms.

No. I would be considered coastal elite, by most people, who don't interact with the real elites (e.g., my parents worked and my grandparents were immigrants).

no, and i dont consider public schools to be 'pubic assistance' in the same way i dont consider roads 'public assistance'. they're things everyone has access to regardless of income level. imo 'public assistance' is a service reserved for people who qualify by being under an income threshold.

Hence why I put public schools under the No category of options.
