I've decided that from this point on, and to improve votals, I'll just take the top 2 or 3 of each day, and put it into the actual poll of the next day.

Surprised that Yoshi's Island beat out Star Fox 2, but it is the more... mechanically adroit game? Rather than SF2's showing off what the system is capable of.

For the Game Boy, you can vote for Gameboy or Gameboy Color games. The only requirement is that the game be playable on a giant brick Game Boy from 1989.

My Vote: This is probably wrong, but I'm giving it to Pokemon RBY anyway. That was a transformative moment, as in, it transformed every other Gameboy cartridge I owned into shelf decorations, because there was no point in playing anything else.

Pokemon Yellow, specifically. The upgraded sprites were beautiful for the system's limitations and the Pikachu voice on a game that could be played on OG GB impressed the heck out of me at the time.

Surely Pokmon GSC is more technically impressive than RBY? Donkey Kong Land III is also a good one. X is a super interesting answer as it is very advanced mechanically but quite simple visually which I guess is the tradeoff. Waiting for more arguments before I make a vote.

Crystal is Color-exclusive but GS are playable on the brick so that would be a valid vote.

(This isn't my vote)

I also agree that Pokemon Yellow should be counted separately than RB.

Some of them can, some of them can't. There's an easy way to tell by looking at the cartridge. If it's opaque, it can be played on the original GB (in greyscale of course, and with some features unavailable on some games). If it's translucent, it can't.

Pokmon Gold/Silver, good enough for me! Also want to mention the real-time clock and day/night cycle which were very impressive at the time. Technically its a straight upgrade from RBY.

Crystal was color exclusive so i think it's also where the line was. i believe MGS is color exclusive, which breaks the one requirement.

i get the feeling anagram was mostly just discouraging homebrew releases in saying that at the time but eh

the answer would be x even with gbc tbh lol

side note, i think it's unfortunate games like donkey kong and wario land 1 aren't also in the running, they had some cool stuff up their sleeve, especially factoring in their slick enhanced colour palettes on sgb/gbc/gbp which i feel are worth mentioning as regular gb games from '94
