Yes this is based stuff this discussion:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/400-current-events/80735521

The scenario included going to an event where you're given a name tag in a space for pronouns. Seems easy enough to respect other people's choice of pronouns.

However, taking it a step further, some consider not writing down anything to be just as disrespectful. Do you think this is true?

I don't want attention I just want data. I'm on the spectrum and numbers fascinate me. I'm curious to know what the social circle known as gamefaqs thinks.

No, not disrespectful, but questionable. Like just putting your pronouns is such a simple and easy thing to do. I'd be skeptical of anyone that had an issue with listing their pronouns.

if someone asks you what your pronouns are, and you refuse to answer, and they refer to you as "they", and you get mad about it, that is entirely on you

I'd say "not inherently", mostly because some folks are still questioning their own identities and I don't think they should be pushed into giving an answer so quickly if they're not yet comfortable with doing so (and especially if they live somewhere that's systemically hostile toward trans people and/or are living near or with people who are personally hostile toward trans people, where being seen or heard giving the "wrong" answer can have some major negative consequences for them, up to and including death).

If you ask them respectfully, and they give you their pronouns, great, but if they're uncomfortable with doing so (and not responding with hostility, e.g. the stupid-ass "I identify as an attack helicopter" "joke" that gets endlessly repeated by far-right jackholes who think they're so funny), don't push them to give you an answer to that question immediately.

No. It's absolutely trivially easy to simply do so, but it's also completely unnecessary unless someone wants to disclose it for their own purposes or just to support those who do. As long as people have the option to disclose it without being shamed, that's where it should stop. The idea that one needs to do so to show support is just good intentions taken too far.

This. The context is literally in the OP. I see it in the same way as people that make a big stink about being asked to include their preferred pronouns in their work email. We have a few transgender people in our organization and it stands out if they're the only ones putting their preferred pronouns.

If you are genuinely uncomfortable providing your pronouns because, for example, you're not quite ready to out yourself publicly, then no, I wouldn't call it disrespectful. On the other hand, if you're a stubborn knob pretending you don't know that pronouns are a basic part of speech, refusing to acknowlege that you absolutely do have pronouns that you prefer, and throwing a hissyfit at a work function because I guess you can't be bothered to spend a second of your life on something that might make other people feel comfortable and included, then yeah, kind of.

It doesn't matter how many times you say it. They'll keep going "It's obvious what my pronouns are, so I'm not the one who needs to share" and "I'm not comfortable sharing".

They live in a world where they think "die cis scum" is a serious and widespread call to arms. But I guess they think trans people are like vampires or something, and have to wait until you share your pronouns and confirm your cis status before they can act.

If people don't specify their preferred pronouns, then oftentimes it can be possible for others to potentially accidentally misgender them based off of their outward appearance (i.e. "he/him" for masculine-looking individuals and "she/her" for feminine-looking individuals).

I mean, there are people who have an outward appearance indistinguishable from men who don't like to be called "he", and people who have an outward appearance indistinguishable from women who don't like to be called "she".

No; but you do lose the right to be offended at people for getting them wrong if you're refusing to disclose what the right ones are. No matter how obvious you feel it should be. It's also going to come across as quite petty if you're specifically asked and refuse to answer.

Then most people can write them down no problem. I don't see very many people withholding their first name when prompted. Pronouns are no different.

People who are worried about being misgendered: "Here are my pronouns. I don't want to be misgendered."

People who say it's obvious they are gender-conforming: "I fear sharing such personal information, yet I'll say nothing if you use my pronouns."
