1) yes i am very cool
2) I made this topic because various men on instagram were going out of his way to call people various synonyms for "feeble womanly men" because they drive automatics.
3) why are these guys always sitting in a truck taking a selfie with oakleys on

I guess it's because just about everyone in the UK learns to drive with a manual gearbox. Even the ladies!

So it has no association with masculinity.

Technology evolves. It's like if people bragged they hand crank their motor to start it way back when. "Using your keys? Pussy!"

Now all the key users think they are practically bathed in testosterone compared to those with a push button start.

I had to scrap my Passat. Why? Because the computer for the electric handbrake malfunctioned, meaning it would cost thousands to get it road legal. All this on a car that doesn't even need a fucking handbrake.

How aer Manuals better, Automatics are clearly the better choice. You are just adding an extra layer of a non sense to the driving experiences .And many automatics have Manual mode.

I've only ever driven one automatic, and I hated it. U guess because here you learn on a manual, and it's what I'm used to by a massive margin, rightly or wrongly I felt like I was missing a big element of control over the vehicle.

There's a growing backlash against that shit. Even worse, are subscription services to use features in a vehicle that you own.

I saw that vid too. I'm going to be very particular about the tech in my next car. I'm kind of a "car guy" and a lot of people in the forums I read are saying that they're not buying anything after ~2015 rn.

That's kind of the optimal year for balance between new tech and some overengineered money pit.

It's so predictable that every thread about transmissions devolves into this back and forth, every goddamn time. We should all be on the same team, because the powers that be want everyone to have a self driving electric car in the next decade or so.

Yeah one thing I like about my Durango is that it still has a mechanical shifter and parking break, and it's a relatively new vehicle. No dials or buttons or setting the brake in the touchscreen nonsense. What dumb engineer thought that would be a smart idea?? It's not even cost efficient. "YEAH, let's remove the simple, cable operated brake and make it computer controlled with a hundred different points of failure, that's what the customer wants!".

If I know anything about engineers, it's that they weren't the driving force behind this cultural change. Some marketing guy was sitting down in a meeting, 3 lines of charlie in and talking about "intuitive functionality" or something like that

I never learned how to use a manual, but being a Hyundai driver, I recently started thinking it'd be nice to have a manual car, just b/c the thieves won't know how to steal the fucking car, then... (-_-)

The "backlash" is pretty useless considering we only keep moving further in the direction of this fucking awful technology. Looking for cars now is horrible, you basically have to pick the one with the fewest intrusive expensive BS and just accept some of it as unavoidable.
One thing I absolutely will not budge on is the god damned touch screen controls. The less I need to use that for, the better. Give me fucking dials and mechanical controls. And if I need to use the touch screen to open the glove box, that car is automatically disqualified.

slow down and coast instead of playing the GAS -> BRAKES -> GAS -> BRAKES -> GAS -> BRAKES game that so many drivers seem to enjoy. when i am stuck in traffic like this, i make a game of seeing how long i can go without touching the brakes.

That is what I do, and you know what fucking sucks?

Because I do this, I end up leaving a fairly large gap between me and the driver in front. That seems like a good idea - means I coast slowly rather than stopping and starting. And for some fucking reason, some asshole in the next lane over takes this as a signal to move into my lane. Like he thinks because there's a gap it's going to get him there faster.

Yeah, same. It's a recent desire of mine. I started to use the paddle shifters in my automatic, but I'd like to learn to drive a real manual.

That being said, I couldn't care less what type of transmission everyone drives, and judging people for it is idiotic.

yeah, that happens. and yeah, it is annoying. but i find it is much less stressful, overall, to continue to coast with a large gap between me and the next car than it is to try and play 'road police' and hug the bumper of the guy in front of me to prevent that from happening.

a significant portion of traffic jams are nothing more than people over braking due to tailgating. it accumulates a little bit with each car in the chain until traffic eventually stops. for no good reason at all. people are just idiots and don't know how to drive.

Sounds like marketing disguised as social engineering to me. The last I saw sales on manual cars, they were something like 2% of the entire market, which is the lowest it's ever been in the US.

As someone whose primary car is a manual, I disagree. I already don't trust most people to drive safely in an automatic. Additional user inputs are not going to improve that.

I get stuck in traffic like this once a week when my office work day. I default to coasting in 1st, even when there's a 2 car gap ahead of me--you just know there will be bumper-to-bumper stop again in a few seconds.

For the topic title, I don't browse the sites or places that may have such people acting like that.

Personally, never learned manual (I mean, why? If there's none available and parents and relatives always had automatic? Including driver's education that had no manual cars).
Do I want to? Not really.
Do I care about what others drive? No...

Only thing I care about is making sure to get from Point A to B in one piece without being hit by distracted or accosted by angry road-rage fueled drivers.

I only know one person like that in real life and he's a good friend of mine and I'm pretty sure he's just trolling. So every time that convo comes up, I ask him how he's enjoying his manual in DMV traffic because it is straight booty almost all of the time.

I also call him a grandma driver for how long it takes him to accelerate on side roads while everyone waits for him to shift gears instead of having it almost instant like an automatic

It's easier to use engine breaking if you're going down a hill and you can downshift when you want to get more torque if you need to accelerate faster to pass someone, for example.
