I've done this style of poll contest once before, back in either Gen VII or Gen VIII, so why not try it again now? The rules are simple: each day, I'm going to post a poll for a given Pokemon typing, with each generation's roster of new Pokemon filling in that typing. You just need to look at what each generation had to offer, and select which generation you think brought the best new roster (for any reason; you could say that a single Pokemon was so good that it overwhelms everything else the generation spawned, or you could select a generation that may be more well-rounded that the one that created your personal favorite). At the end of the day, one generation will be crowned a champion (with potential tiebreakers if need be), and that generation will advance to a second round, where the eighteen winners, and fourteen strongest runner-ups will be sorted into a 32-entrant tournament to crown which generation produced the best overall roster of a single typing.

Despite having retroactive additions, Fairy didn't gain a lot of traction outside of a little bit of Gen I love. Nor did its offerings spark joy with Gens VIII or IX. No, it came down to the original, particularly with a beloved legendary and Mega Evolutions, versus the games I personally think got it right one generation later. In the end, Gen VII scored a doubling, but this was the lowest votal round thus far, so perhaps people just don't care for Fairies.

For today's contest, we're doing Fighting-types. This is my personal favorite typing, so I hope one of the generations I think did a really good job gets some well-deserved praise here. Given Gen VI's limited roster, I have folder Mega Evolutions into their list, as those were, effectively, some of the new Pokemon created in lieu of brand new designs for Gen VI. I'll keep the same concept for later typings as well. Note: I will not be considering things like Dialga/Palkia's form changes in Gen VIII, as those are still technically the same in the way Giratina's form change was back in Gen IV.

Bug: Gen V (30 Votes, 44.12%)
Dragon Gen III (30 Votes, 41.67%)
Fairy: Gen VII (24 Votes, 39.34%)
Electric: Gen I (24 Votes, 37.50%)

So let's take a look at what we've got, because this is a tough call.

Gen II...even though Heracross is a GREAT Pokemon, this is hindered by Tyrogue being THE worst Pokemon of all time, and Hitmontop not being worth the trouble in terms of a third, inferior evolution.

Gen VIII has SO MUCH heavy lifting being carried by post-game content. The DLC gave us Galarian Zapdos and the Urshifu line, and Arceus gave us Sneasler and Hisuian Lilligant. Those are all great. Which the main game of Sword/Shield gave us was an admittedly cool Galarian Farfetch'd...as one of SIX (Zamazenta's base form included) monotypes and NO dual-types whatsoever.

Gen VII is unfortunate. They gave us our first Ice/Fighting, Normal/Fighting (outside of special formes), Dragon/Fighting, Ghost/Fighting, and the first Bug/Fighting since Gen II...and none of them are REALLY high tier except Kommo-o by virtue of being a pseudolegendary. Nothing sticks from Gen VII's roster.

Gen V has some stars for sure. Mienfoo/Mienshao, Scraggy/Scrafty, and the legendary trio are all solid entries. But I just think Pignite/Emboar, while not bad, are a step down from the previous two generations. The Timburr line is FAR inferior to what it's replicating, and Sawk/Throh even moreso. Plus Keldeo is awful.

Gen III has Blaziken and Breloom, both of which are amazing, top tier Pokemon. Unfortunately, Combusken's a bad design, Meditite's a bad design, the Makuhita line is kinda lame, and Medicham is okay. Blaziken/Breloom/Medicham feel like a solid foray into having a decent number of unique Fighting type combos, but it's not enough.

Gen I has a lot of quality Pokemon, with Machamp, Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan being especially memorable. The big problem I have ranking it the BEST is that of the EIGHT Fighting-types in Gen I, SEVEN of them are monotypes, so there's little diversity there.

Gen VI is a surprising one to me, because it gives some solid Megas, most of which have great designs, and three of the four new Pokemon are REALLY high tier. The only thing holding it basic is the disappointment of Chesnaught.

Gen IV is solid. It might only have four lines, but all four final evolutions are awesome, and the three pre-evos aren't terrible either (with Riolu as one of the few baby Pokemon that's actually GOOD).

Gen IX is the best. There is only one Pokemon among this number that I have no real fondness for (Slither Wing), and this generation gave us TWO Water/Fighting-types (after we'd only had Poliwrath and a mythical for the previous eight generations), a second non-legendary Fighting/Flying-type, finally completed Fighting's pairings with multiple Electric/Fighting-types, Ground/Fighting AND Fairy/Fighting, plus one of the better cover legendaries.

Marshadow being a mythical (already a knock against it that makes Annihilape all the better) that came between Sun/Moon and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon (meaning it gets forgotten due to US/UM's new additions)...just rough.

Hard to choose between IV, VII, and IX. Every single line in IV ends up in greatness, but it's only four Pokemon. I absolutely love Marshadow, Buzzwole, and Passimian, and the Stufful line is really good too (and Crabrawler line is okay). Meanwhile IX has more in sheer number, but the highs aren't as high...

Think I have to give it to VII > IV > IX.

The answer is very much not I or III, and I'm gonna be bummed if they win.

the real slander is on tyrogue, i think he embodies a pretty great concept tbh (even if he also makes EV training up any of his evos a little bit annoying)

anyway voted gen 3 (i just really like all gen 3 starter lines a ton, and breloom just as much, and hariyama and medicham's lines have just aged really well to me)

hms to all of the rest of the first 6 gens though (7-9 each have one fighter i like a lot though i'm not that crazy about the rest)

9. Gen III

I don't really like any of these. Blaziken and the Makuhita line are alright, and I don't like the Meditite line.

8. Gen VII

Crabominable is one of my least favorite Pokemon ever. Don't care for the Stufful line, Pheromosa is dum, and Marshadow is a mythical which is automatically a huge minus for me. Passimian and Kommo-o are pretty solid, but overall not a fan of this line up.

7. Gen V

Pignite and Emboar suck and an insult to the magnificent Tepig. The Timburr line is gross, two mythicals (I hate mythicals), three legendaries I don't care much for, and the Mienfoo line is kind of meh. I like Sawk, Throh, and Scrafty enough to beat out III and VII, but I can't put this Gen any higher.

6. Gen II

I don't say this often, but I agree with Inviso. Tyrogue sucks and Hitmontop has one of the dumbest evolution methods, and he isn't even as good as the Gen 1 duo. Also, they made him stand up in later gens for some weird reason and it made me realize he looks dumb right-side-up. Heracross is awesome, but also in Gen 2 is kind of a pain to get and doesn't get any good STAB moves until like level 50. Still, he's cool enough to beat out the bottom three by himself.

5. Gen IV

This is where it starts getting good! Infernape is the anti-Emboar, being a huge improvement over Chimchar. Lucario is a bit overrated but still really good. Croagunk line is probably the worst of the bunch, but not even bad. Solid lineup overall.

4. Gen I

Very solid. I like everything here, but also it doesn't have any real favorites of mine, and I prefer Poliwhirl to Poliwrath. Just a lot of good and not a lot of great.

3. Gen IX

Pawmot, Iron Valiant, and Koraidon are excellent, and I like Flamigo and Annihilape quite a bit too. Quaquaval sucks and is an even bigger waste of potential than Emboar. Poor Quaxly deserved so much better.

2. Gen VI

I don't care much for the Megas, but Pangoro is cool, Pancham is even better, and Hawlucha might just be my favorite Pokemon of all time, depending on the day. Unfortunately, this Gen is once again held back by a final evolution ruining a great starter. Poor Chespin.

1. Gen VIII

G-Farfetch'd, Grapploct, Sirfetch'd, and Falinks are all great. Even G-Zapdos and Zamazenta are pretty good. I don't like the Kubfu line or H-Decidueye but other than that everything else is pretty good.

The way the topic title is phrased sounds like it should be "What is the best type in Gen 1, Gen 2, etc."

First time I'm going for gen 9, as I've been too harsh on most of the paradox mons, and all the basic mons otherwise are great. This was close, though - gen 3 I've used literally every 'mon on a team at one point or another, whereas gen 6 was mostly solid (except for Chesknaught, who suffers by virtue of being the most forgettable final form of its generation.)

A lot of strong candidates here, but in the end I think that Gen 9 is the clear winner. I had noticed earlier that you can build a team of just Gen 9 fighting Pokemon which are obtainable in Scarlet's main game and it would actually be a damn good team:
Quaquaval
Pawmot
Flamigo
Annihilape
Fire/Fighting Tauros
Great Tusk (catch it in the desert after beating the titan)

Good type variety and most of those Pokemon are interesting too. Not many gen/type combos can claim that.

It was a difficult vote between IV and VI for me. I like and appreciate all the lines in IV. VI has higher highs (Pangoro, Chesnaught, and Hawlucha) but I don't like M-Medicham and M-Lopunny...and in general, I find it hard to care too much about Mega Pokemon since I very rarely get to see/use them.
