They get stuck in it, Margolyes explained. I do Cameos, and people say, Were having a Harry Potter-themed wedding, and I think, Gosh, whats their first night of fun going to be? I cant even think about it. No.

Lol

It's always weird to me when actors find a need to shame people for liking one of their roles. Like, lady, they're paying you the desired rate to reprise a role of yours that they liked. Why do you feel the need to backhand them like that?

It's one of the things I kinda disliked about Alec Guinness. He was the kind of guy who tried to tell people to stop being Star Wars fans because he just didn't get it.

I agree with this. I dont mind Harry Potter and think Disney had a great run in the 90s but its not part of my character. If you let it define you then youre probably taking it too far, especially in an interest such as consuming media which is actually a fairly passive thing to do.

I feel like a Harry Potter themed wedding isn't that big of a deal, and lots of people do themed birthdays/weddings.

Same with the people who have The Office define their character as well. I get liking something but there's a point where it becomes weird.

My take as well. I'm noticing a lot more "Nintendo Adults" ever since Mario land opened in Universal, to the point where I think that seems to be a prerequisite for this type of thing lol.

The only defense I can think of for Mario Land is that a vast majority of Nintendo fans are grown and didnt have a theme park to enjoy like newer fans of today can.

But yeah, I hope we dont start having theme parks for every fandom in existence.

I get it... but here's the the thing.. two things really...

For as deep and adoring as the LOTR fandom is... you don't have LOTR themed weddings like with Harry Potter. I'm sure they exist, but they aren't a substantial quantity that people would bring up outside of the context of something comparing it to Harry Potter or Star Trek levels of fandom.

Also, let's kinda be honest about something here... as fun and accessible as it is now, the LOTR trilogy was a ground breaking and genre defining work. It's honestly classic literature now. It took a few decades to really get the recognition is deserved too.

She's a beloved British actress who is famously blunt and frequently obscene in interviews.

She's just having fun and enjoying herself. Certainly not acting out trauma. Neither bitter, nor a loser. Doesn't care if she touched a nerve.

She not trying to make a big point and locate it in an appropriate framework of moral consistency. She's an 82 year old woman on a chat show saying 'bloody hell, these fans are a bit weird'.

And also a miserable asshole apparently.

Anyone who complains about shit like this needs to find some joy in their lives. Life doesn't have to be so worthless that you spend time putting down people who aren't hurting anyone and enjoying themselves.

It's sad that nerds on the Internet are suddenly all about this nonsense when it comes to Harry Potter. JK Rowling being a transphobe doesn't give you an excuse to hypocritically start mocking people for not conforming to "adult" hobbies. It's like hating Chick-fil-A, but doing so because "chicken nuggies are for kids". You can say it's because of their history of anti-LGBT support! You don't need to also have some weird other criticism that you don't even consistently adhere to.

Harry Potter doesn't mean anything to me. The movies were fun. I saw them a few years ago for the first time. You don't talk down about people that you're continuing to make money off of. That's uncouth.

She is one of the most joyful and funny people you will see.

She wasn't complaining, just making fun in a very minor and pretty harmless way. The fact that people are being far more insulting and vicious at someone who dared to mock them suggests that the absence of joy lies elsewhere. If people are secure and unembarrassed by their adult hobbies, why the disproportionate response?

I'm conflicted. One one hand, as others have said already, there's nothing wrong with being a fan or even a big fan of something, but when you make being a fan a part of your entire life and/or personality, it's odd. I love lots of things, but I wouldn't have a wedding or other important event in my life revolve around one of them.

On the other, if it doesn't really hurt anybody, let people enjoy it. Let them be "weirdos" or whatever. At least they have something to enjoy in life.

bfslick50 posted...

Hardcore sports fandom has always gotten an unfair pass. Lots of those types need to be called out as well or at least when they're being really obnoxious about it, like how many extreme sports fans can be. Not all are like that of course.
