I liked The Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Favourite. Didn't like The Lobster.

I think the premise was interesting, but it never really went anywhere. It felt like the majority of the film was just Emma Stone having sex with ugly men. I had to watch it in 10 min chunks because I kept wanting to turn it off.

The production design and costumes were nice at least. Willem Dafoe was really the best part of the movie.

I don't know. Maybe I just didn't "get it".

Seeing Emma Stone fully naked in all these sex acts wasn't anywhere close to hot as one could imagine but I guess that was the intention. Too weird, dry and arthousey for my liking.

I thought the trailer looked interesting but I missed it on the big screen. I just found out the theater near my house is screening it tonight. I might go see it.

Only part of the movie is black and white. The color palette seems to develop as Stone's character does.

I loved the movie overall, but it did sort of have one glaring problem that I couldn't quite get past, and I found it odd how little attention was brought to that fact by others who watched it.

I'm talking about the super creepy fact that the main character is quite literally an infant child in a woman's body.

Why? Do you think it is pedophilic?

Not necessarily, since the men she fucks don't technically know. But I think it severely muddles the message of female sexual empowerment that the movie otherwise nails.
Plus, you know. It's just fucking gross.

I just got done watching this movie a few hours ago. Here is my 2 cents:

I saw that it was labeled as a Black Comedy so right away I was expecting heavy absurdity, shocking and fucked up scenes to be humorous, and they did all this. The acting were certainly good from everyone but the characters were not very likeable nor relatable so finding some kinda connection to this movie wasn't there.

The movie wasn't my cup of tea either but what I disliked most about the movie is Bella is a Mary Sue. She's everything in the movie except wrong or defeated. She's trapped, she's the prisoner, she's the victim and yet she's the hero liberator as she is an innocent and pure soul and all of her actions are justified because she has a child's mind. She doesn't know consequences and she faces none from her choices whether good or bad which I think is a pretty bad narrative. In the end it just feels like she took everything that was kind to her for granted and yet she still got a happy ending. The title of the movie suggests we should feel sorry for her but it didn't do nothing for me.

So weird that an Alisdair Gray book has become an Oscar bait movie. I remember when nobody outside of Glasgow had heard of him. Hopefully they do movies of Lanark and A History Maker next.

Apparently that was a pretty big critique from a lot of people, to the point that Emma had to address it in interviews. The reason she gave for why the movie shouldn't be viewed that way is the whole thing is a metaphor and shouldn't be taken literally. That's what she actually said. I haven't watched it yet though...

I've always looked at Black Comedies as using really fucked up situations to be funny.

It kinda hits on the same female empowerment as Barbie but just in a way more intriguing way.
