I'm still in my initial playthrough and had a "oh shit" moment when I realized Synergy could be paired with Comet, wondering if I just found the code to nuke the game. However, it's such a slow spell that I'm not sure if it's any better than something like Thunder.

And it's a crapshoot whether the comets actually hit anything.

It looks incredible, but it also fills the screen with chaos making it more difficult to see what your enemies are doing.

I assume it's more useful on bigger enemies.

Regardless it's still one of my favorite setups just because it's a damn cool spell.

btw if anyone doesn't know, there's a glitch (at least I think it's a glitch) where sitting on cushions still restore your MP in Hard Mode. Just waiting (fearing) for a patch to patch that out!!

Kinda excited for the ending now.

Also excited for the update. I guess that's why my game loaded from the start screen this morning instead of continuing from sleep. Sharp Performance mode sounds interesting. Maybe less TAA? I thought the game used TAA super well already, certainly better than any recent AAA game I can think of.

My only issue with the final Chapter is Zack. And I have no problems with the gameplay of the final boss rush, but I am also someone that would swap party constantly throughout the game and had everyone with decent builds. I know some people for example didn't bother giving stuff back to Cait, or they unequipped Aerith.

There are times in this game where it feels like it forgets its own mechanics, with the very final fight with Cloud and Aerith being the worst offender. It's specifically two elements - first is Heartless Angel. I'm conceptually fine with a 'reduce everyone to 1 HP' move, but the fact it is unavoidable essentially forces you to horde ATB charges. You have to respond immediately, and if you happen to have an auto-whatever materia on Aerith she is going to waste her ATB (was there a way to edit this during just that fight? Because no way was I restarting the entire ending sequence. They gave this option during the Zack segment but I saw nothing for this part). So I spent most of the fight with Cloud at full charge, too afraid to use any move lest Sephiroth get off an undodgeable all-but-1-HP attack (I was unfortunately low on team-targeting health items so I needed both charges). Which, all of this would be fine if it was broken apart from the other fights, but it feels like the whole thing is set up around a specific materia setup that you would have no reason to expect ahead of time.

Then is the final super attack he does which ends in an instant ko if you don't kill him in time. It's total RNG nonsense - he doesn't appear to enter it at any set point. One time I had him already all but staggered from the previous phase, but that actually screwed me over because his instant ko goes off after he recovers. I only managed to get through this phase because I got lucky enough to have him hit the lowest HP possible before he enters the state after 10+ attempts. It's insane to end the game on a timed sequence but where the parameters of that sequence are incredibly variable.

And it's so freaking long, with an unskippable cutscene right before it. It's 2024 and they're still doing unskippable cutscenes? So it ends up being an entirely ordinary fight except for two specific moves that completely screw you over if Sephiroth uses them at a bad time. It never comes off as a hard fight but a cheap one.

It's been a few days and I still feel like it's among the worst boss fights I've ever encountered. Just a failure from every angle - tedious, unengaging, cheap, and not even giving you a meaningful way to take a break.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that if the game just gave up and said "yeah this stuff fucking blows" and it cut the last chunk and replaced it with a Somnium Files dance number ending, the actual game narrative on the whole would be better for it.

This isn't just a final boss thing, the last dungeon is super boring. It's a solid 5 hours of junk across the finish line.

This isn't a Rebirth only thing, the number of jRPGs with good final dungeons is probably less than 20%. Most of my favorite jRPGs have bad final dungeons.

Tales of Zesteria is a steaming pile of shit, but God bless it's clean ending chunk.

I've "beaten" Berseria 4 times, by which I mean 3 of those times I got to the final dungeon and started over the next time I played.

One of the worst. Even the music is going too hard, it sounds like a battle theme playing during the entire dungeon.

Arise is at least straightforward, even if it's kind numbingly long and boring. Berseria's is both but also extremely confusing.

Again, fucking wild that Zesteria, the game nobody should ever play, got it so right.

The thing about FF14 is that it's forced to keep all its dungeons at roughly the same length for gameplay purposes. Which means gameplay bloat for dungeons (a.k.a. a bunch of trash puzzles) just doesn't happen...anymore. Final dungeons in FF14 are just the gameplay you already like plus great cutscenes.

Thats all you need. It should not be that complicated.

Another shoutout: Crosscode's final dungeon puzzle was the most absurd thing I've ever seen and almost made me quit.

Wow some of these fights you unlock after beating the game are hard AF. I'm not really sure how to keep getting stronger either since I'm already max level.

I guess I could max out my stat boosting materia but I'm not even sure it would help that much.

There's a Cloud 1 on 1 fight against a white wolf and it does 3000 damage with an AOE attack and then follow up with 4-5 fireballs each doing 1500 damage each too. It also feels like you're doing pitiful damage in these fights.

I mean yeah that's fight 2 of 5 though so IDK how brutal the last 3 fights are as well. I beat all of the protorelic fights on dynamic first try so I think I'm pretty good at the combat but the numbers in these post game fights are just rough.

You get two elemental materia, if you attach one to the fire and ice materia and one to the lightning and wind, you'll be healed by every elemental attack.

Not sure how much that helps, I haven't tried it myself. Couldn't even beat Zolomy on hard mode =/

I attached my Elementals to AP Up to get them to 2 stars ASAP, but then I started actually using them. The 7500 AP grind to hit 3 stars was just too daunting before NG+. Speaking of which, is there a known Chadley challenge that allows for easy AP farming? One of the best things about Interlude is that it offered just such a challenge, allowing you to level up most Materia in minutes.
