I was gonna say gaming laptop, but I'm actually not that serious about it. I don't need anything very high end since I don't plan to play any particularly demanding or AAA games on it; I think the most powerful game I want to play on it is like.. Sonic Generations. But my old laptop couldn't run that and has some slight issues playing PS2 games, so I want something at least a little better than that. But to be honest I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to PC specs, or if I should be looking for certain processors or graphics cards and such, or what.

If a 12 year old game is your most demanding, then most decent laptops should play it. I would error on the higher end since "I just want to play X on it" usually leads to "Why can't I play game that is 5 times more demanding than X?" a year or two down the road. A gaming laptop might not be a bad idea since you can get some decent ones for less than the price of a new graphics card. Steam Deck is also an option if you don't mind messing around with dev mode to do anything other than play Steam games.

Bump.
Kinda curious cause my laptop is near death with all of its Blue Screens. Maybe having something with power would be nice.

I think I might splurge a little bit after all. The timing is perfect; old laptop broke, tax return time, and I just got my annual bonus at work. I'm thinking somewhere between $700 and $1000.

The problem is that I just don't know what all the jargon means as far as what the machine is capable of handling, gaming wise.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 (140W),
4-cell, 90Whr Battery

So about <40 minutes of battery life playing a game

Is that normal?

Absolutely. I'm very happy with the Victus 15 I got this year, however even after following all sorts of steps to preserve battery life it still only has 2.5-3 hours.

Won't be an issue; I normally keep it hooked up most of the time, and I'm used to a short battery life.

Plug the specs of what you're looking at into a benchmarking site, then do the same with your current laptop to get a comparison of how the new one will perform relative to your old one. If you can find some well-rated alternatives that are outside your price range, you can also plug them in to give you an idea of how much you'll be missing out on because of your budget.

People go to school, other people's houses, have jobs where they can use it, want to take it outside to do work, sit on the couch with other people, go on camping trips, car rides, idk. I assume people buy laptops so they can take it somewhere.

I've always wanted one of these slim laptops/phones to just make the thing a brick but quadruple the battery life so it lasts for multiple days. Idk why they don't do this. Tough sell to shareholders maybe.

I feel like I shouldn't rush an expensive decision like this, but I am leaning toward the Acer Nitro 16. The only negative things I've seen about it is the weight, subpar speakers and camera, and I don't really care about those too much. I'll hold off for a bit though, to see if I can find a better deal or a better recommendation.

because there's actual legal reasons. it would be a laptop you couldn't actually go anywhere with. wanna take it with you on a plane? nope, get fucked.

at that point, you might as well just carry around an all in one and a jackery battery, would weigh the same and give you even more battery life.

Had some annoying crap going on during the weekend, and combined with the fact that I don't splurge on myself very often (other than cars, the most expensive thing I've ever bought for myself would be my Switch), I decided that life's too short to hold back. I've decided on this, but I just haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Look at that; I just saved $250 by waiting a few more days. Got it for $1050 instead of $1300.

It's not bad. If you can add another 16gb to it it might even be good.
16gb is the minimum for windows 11 these days.

If its 32 bit its useless these days, but if its 64 bit you can install Linux on it and keep it useful.

I haven't had time to start it up, but first thing I noticed is that I underestimated its weight. It's probably 3x as heavy as my old laptop. Guess it's gotta be to have more under the hood.
